TEN SOLDIERS KILLED AND SCORES OF OTHERS INJURED
WHEN TAMIL TIGER BOMB EXPLODES TARGETTING BUS

By Walter Jayawardhana

Ten off duty Sri Lanka Army soldiers were killed and seven other soldiers and eight civilians were killed when a suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) claymore bomb was remotely detonated targeting a bus carrying the victims.

The military convoy was traveling through the Northern Vavuniya District July 24 and the incident happened at a place called Cheddikulam, close to the Tamil Tiger terrorist occupied Wanni area, the Ministry of Defense said.

"The bus was carrying unarmed army personnel who were going on leave," the defence ministry said in a statement.

The Ministry of Defense said the unarmed soldiers were going on leave and the bus was traveling from Mannar. The same sources said the bomb was fixed on a parked bicycle and had been detonated when the bus was passing the spot by a remote control device.

The injured were rushed to the Anuradhapura Hospital.Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said that the increase of attacks by the LTTE against the military and civilians was significant following their defeat in the East. He said if the trend continued the Army would be compelled to crush them in the Wanni too.
