Let the Defence Secretary and the Army do their job in their own way, without Kiriella's insults and innuendos- UNP owes it at least to the Country and the Security Forces.

By Charles Perera

If UNP has a modicum of respect still left with it, some one in the UNP should ask Laksman Kiriella to keep his mouth shut, as opening his mouth to voice distasteful crap helps neither the UNP nor the Government Military Forces. Mr. Kiriella in his cosy comfort opens his big mouth hoping to win the applause of the people, but he little understands that in doing so he puts in peril the country that is facing a critical period of her history.

The army had been fighting a war against a group of ruthless terrorists who, once in their long period of cowardly extravagance of spreading death and disaster, have been cornered by the heroic soldiers of the Security forces. They had been fighting relentlessly without a pause for a considerable period of time. The soldiers of the Security Forces are human beings and are not machines, they should surely be alert and vigilant, but situation is tense and stressful for them.

Every one of the terrorist cornered as they are and cooped in Wanni is a potential suicide cadre, who is prepared to die either in battle or by taking a cyanide capsule. For the terrorists there is no alternative. Therefore the Soldiers who are defending the country is in constant danger of facing the terrorists preparing for a last ditch show down. The President, the Defence Secretary and the Commander of the armed forces are fully aware of the situation . They have to be cautious, in sending their men to face unknown danger. It is like hunting a wounded tiger. We have to give them time to plan their strategies before they attack.

Kirella perhaps wants the soldiers to go running after the terrorists, like "robocops" he had seen in films. So far the Defence Secretary and the Commander of the Armed Forces have done a marvellous job, more than what we had expected of them. Many are the young soldiers who had given their lives. It is time that UNP big mouths shut up once in their despicable lives, and allow the people who are doing a difficult job do it in their own way, without throwing insults and innuendos.

Kirella and the UNP could at least help the army and the country, by keeping their stinking poisonous mouths shut, allowing the Security Forces to put an end to terrorism in Sri Lanka in their own way. Kiriella and UNP owes it to the country if not to the Government, the President, the Defence Secretary or to the Army Commander.

The terrorists may be short of arms and ammunitions, but not of hard currency. Those who are bashing the Government and the Defence Secretary are just doing what the terrorists want, perhaps in expectation of recompense. There was a news item that UNP had helped the terrorists in the jungles around Yala.
