Mahinda Rajapakse has displayed qualities of a Statesman in dealing with terrorists, against Mr. George Bush's aggressiveness, and political interference, in dealing with Iran, and Myanmar.

By Charles Perera

When the monks of the JHU raised their voice against forced conversions, and demand military action against the terrorists, the USA went to the extent of calling the JHU a terrorist group. The very same USA is hailing the Buddhist monks rising against the military regime in Myanmar, and even proposes sanctions against the Military Regime in Myanmar..

If it is to intervene in the affairs of a sovereign state the USA has no qualms to repeat that the government should not resort to military action against terrorism but negotiate peace. Why does not the Administration of USA the double tongued prophet, once in its miserable role of world leadership extend their corporation to the sovereign states to overcome terrorism and develop their countries ? Why does not USA become generous , and peaceful instead of being aggressive, mean and cruel.

If Myanmar were to opens itself to outside world, the whole gang of Human right activist, Amnesty International, FMM, NGOs and , INGOs will land there in numbers criticising every activity of the government making it even more difficult to rule, than it is now under its military regime. It would just be "changing pillows to cure a head ache". We are experience how it is in Sri Lanka.

What does these supposed to be democratic USA does to help Cuba ? They have enforced their famous sanctions, and indirectly help the people to change the regime. Why cant they accept a regime different from their system, but yet help it economically to help its people friendly programmes instead of enforcing sanctions and make military threats.

Even in Iran, USA need not call the President of the country a little Hitler, and make demeaning remarks, and threaten with military intervention,. But instead accept him as he is and start a dialogue of peace and friendship. That would be a change of American tactics from being aggressive, to being more democratic, generous and peaceful. USA demands peace and dialogue when dealing with other countries, but in its own dealings with other countries USA is not democratic, and open to dialogue. USA can change the world through its leadership only if it could change its present approach of being tough and aggressive.

USA can take a lesson from the President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapakse, who while he tries to keep the terrorists under control through military force, has not failed to call them to lay down their arms and come for a negotiated settlement of their grievances. In that respect M. Mahinda Rajapakse has displayed qualities of a Statesman, against Mr. George Bush's military dictatorship, unbending aggressiveness, and political interference.
