A Challenge to Ranil Wickremasinghe

S. Hewage

Ranil Wickremasinghe and his fellow UNPrs want defense secretary to resign over the latest LTTE terror attacks in Anuradahpura. Good challenge!!. First, I suggest that Ranil Wickremasinghe, as the leader of the UNP, lost 14 elections. His party's best and the brightest left him because they wanted him to resign and Ranil refused to do so for the reasons known only to him.

Now its seems, at last, Ranil is ready to listen to his critics! I have a challenge to Ranil: in a democracy, if the party leader loses an election, it means the people of that country have no confidence in him/her. As a result, the leader of the party who lost the election resigns forthwith accepting the verdict of the masses.

Because Ranil Wickremasinghe lost 14 elections, and up to this point, he has not responded to his critics, I challenge him to resign as the leader of the UNP within 21 days of this publication (August 25th 2007). If he resigns, I will make the same challenge to defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse, whom I have no doubt will take up my challenge. Ranil Wickremasinghe--this is your opportunity to prove that your critics are wrong, and most importantly I am wrong!! If readers think this is a good challenge, they should support this important cause by writing to the editor.
