It is the duty of all Socialist Movements to rally round the Government to end terrorism, and keep away the UNP reactionaries.

By Charles Perera.

Somawansa Amarasinghe and JVP are not any better than Ranil Wickramasinghe and UNP with the two bankrupt politicians Mangala Samaraweera and Sripath Sooriyaratchi tagged behind. As it is it would be better that JVP joins with the UNP-SLFP namesakes and the TNA to form their much talked of Broad Front, as no other intelligent person seem to show any interest in forming a Broad Front with JVP for a Government under Somawansa Amarasinghe’s Leadership. The final result of this political amalgam would be a re-immergence of Prabhakaran, and perhaps loosing the military victories we have had so far in the fight against terrorism.

JVP with or without a Broad Front could be sure never be able to form a government of their own, or even with who ever other partners. The out come of their sad effort would be a victory for Ranil Wickramasinghe and UNP to come back into political power. It always happens when the left forces are divided , that the rightists who are never divided will be returned to power. This the left never seem to understand, because of the myopia resulting from a political ambition of their own egoist self satisfaction rather than a sincere service for the country and its people.

The JVP seems to mix priorities, hoping that the moment is ripe for them to form a government of their own, beating the iron when it is hot as the saying goes. But the time is not well selected to put a socialist government, what ever its defects, in difficulty. The Government of the President Mahinda Rajapakse has been able to break the backbone of the terrorist menace; give him little more time and terrorism in Sri Lanka may be history.

JVP seems not to know that once they come into power, they will also have the same problems that the President Rajapakse seems to have, with an antagonist left movement on whom he depended when he was elected. The very friends he depended on drew their daggers behind his back. There is always a Brutus in any political camp. But JVP should think twice, before they proceed on their chosen path.

The President is popular, and more political agitation against him by the JVP and the UNP will only make the President win the sympathy of the people and their support.. If the JVP has any patriotic feeling towards the country and the people, they should stop the ranting of Somawansa Amarasinghe and join the President, before it is too late. The JVP is still politically immature and that may be the reason why they cannot calm their emotions, bury their pride, and settle their disputes with the President and join him to administer the country along with him.

I am not a SLFP supporter of the “kapuvath nil” type, I have no political affiliations or leanings. I have not met or even seen the President Mahinda Rajapakse except in pictures. But I believe that he is a capable man and taking into account the political leaders around, Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse seems to be the political leader who could take the country out of the present impasse. Therefore, all the people should rally round him. Without the backing of intelligent politicians at this crucial time, even the ablest man may not be able to make head way taking the country towards the set goals. The President has shown his capability to work with any one without deviating from his principles. The dissident members of UNP who joined him are carrying on the work of the Ministries entrusted to them even better than the Ministers of his proper party. That is a great credit to Mr.
Mahinda Rajapakse.

All wrongs the Government is said to have done, including having more Ministers in the Cabinet, and as Mr.Tilvin Silva of the JVP points out “The victories won by security Forces by liberating Thoppigala and the East in the military front are being shattered in the political field. There is no production. The country has been dragged to the low level of begging for everything. The prices of commodities are upped not because the prices go up in the world market”, are directly or indirectly connected with the terrorism, and no right thinking politician could deny, that the priority to-day is some how to end terrorism, it is only after that the other matters could be settled.

The world today is made of inter connected nations. Some, rich Nations may look after the welfare of developing countries, others may pay lip service and take what ever benefits is there from the developing countries. The International Community is not a balanced sincerely generous and fair, just and right thinking institution. They work for their own welfare, with an eye to political leadership in the world. The JVP if they come to power will find that it is not through being aggressive and intolerant that they can lead Sri Lanka towards progress in the international political wilderness. Mahinda Rajapakse is a matured politician and has seen this difficult path, and is manoeuvring his traverse shrewdly with caution. The duty of people friendly Socialist political parties, and all well wishers of the country and its people is to unite with the Government at least until terrorism is put to an end.

It is time for JVP to re-asses its relationship with the President Mahinda Rajapakse, and acting as a responsible left movement of Sri Lanka, support the President and the Government, against the UNP rightist politicians. The JVP being vociferous critics of the government at this time would amount to acting in consort with the UNP, to make governing difficult for the President.
