"FMM reports eleven cases of violations"

Jay Pathbey - USA

It was quite interesting to read the above report in the Island newspaper of May 3rd. There were eleven cases catalogued and discussed in detail.

It is a well known fact that whether one lives in Sri Lanka or overseas we get our news from news media. It is also a much better known fact that the news media reporters in Sri Lanka are controlled by their affiliations to various political, religious and even racial groups.

The neutral unbiased reporting of the 1950's are no more and may never be. This is the case to a large degree in the developing world and to a lesser degree in the so called developed world.

The very media must appreciate that the present government in Sri Lanka have proved beyond any doubt that it is committed and is on course to eliminate terrorism from the shores of Sri Lanka. The government of the President Rajapaksa in no uncertain terms has proved during the two and a half years he has been in power that his first mission is to eliminate and destroy terrorism from Sri Lanka.

The media should also appreciate that Sri Lanka is and has been in a state of war for over thirty years and wars are not fought by newspaper reporters and cameramen. The FMM should divert its resources to countries where media personnel abuse is prevalent even though some of these superpowers are not having a live day to day war going similar to the one in Sri Lanka.

FMM's attitude of isolating Sri Lanka in criticizing its present government and holding it unjustly responsible at a time of war makes us believe that FMM may be pimping for the LTTE. FMM better look for bigger fish elsewhere where abuses against media personnel really occur.
