Wimal Weerawansa made JVP a popular political party, without him JVP will loose its popularity.

By Charles.S.Perera

Wimal Weerawanse is the face of JVP, without him the JVP has lost a part of its living force. JVP's popular existence was partly if not wholly due to its Propaganda Secretary. Lal Kantha and Somawansa Amarasinghe are symbols of the JVP's frightening past. Wimal Weerawance is the modern forward looking democrat. He had a convincing style of speech a more friendly accommodating way with the popular masses.

Somawansa Amarasinghe is in fact the unknown element of the party, a more out of place political thinker of the JVP. Eclipse of Weerawansa from the JVP, is the eclipse of JVP. It was evident from what was going on in different press statements that was being issued to the press from time to time by the JVP stalwarts, Somawansa Amarasinghe, Tilvin Silva, Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Lalkantha, that the JVP was going to burst from the seams of the jacket of its political discipline.

The old Marxism does not exist any more. The Marxism as a political system started with an eye for the world revolution of the proletariat, that never happened. From then itself it was evident that Marxism would have a difficult existence, in a capitalist world given to luxury and decadence.

It is the way with life, people welcome pleasure knowing very well that pain is soon to follow. The Capitalist way of life is exiting and imbued with wine, women and wealth. The people get attached to ,this superficiality of capitalism, and seek it in preference to more profound values of Socialism.

The Marxists should therefore be more open, without trying to imprison themselves in rigid discipline. Wimal Weerawansa understood this necessity to follow the socialist path differently, knowing the reality of the political forces it has to compete with. To-day Marxism cannot progress, unless it change to suit the thinking of the ordinary masses. People like Lalkantha may be able to draw the working class militants to manifest against the government demanding more financial concessions, but it frightens the ordinary people who have nothing to gain from the demands of the trade unions.

Election in the East is a great credit to the Government, which with greater wisdom allowed the defence forces to plan out strategies to rid the East of the terrorists. In order to realise this determination to free the East of the terrorist, the contribution of the TMVP cannot be minimised.

The UNP and the SLMC who neither believed in the victory of the Security Forces, nor give even the minimum of moral support for the Government and its Security Forces to deliver the people of the East from the terrorists, to-day fall over one another to get the votes of the people in the East to represent them in the political forum- the Provincial Council, that the government had made it possible to setup.

TMVP certainly has a greater right than the UNP or the SLMC to take part in the elections of the Provincial Council in the East. They, risked their lives every day, while the big mouthed Rauff Hakeem, and cowardly Ranil Wickramasinghe lived in the comfort of their well guarded homes. Neither Rauff Hakim nor Ranil Wickramasinghe will venture into the East without their retinue of body guards, with pistols handy in their belts.

Therefore, it is neither, the UNP, the SLMC nor the JVP that should demand the government to disarm the TMVP. The TMVP has to protect itself from the terrorists, and perhaps also from the killers let loose by others interested in getting elected for the Provincial Council in the East!

This may be what Wimal Weerawansa may have foreseen, and stated in his speech that one should be out of mind to ask the TMVP to lay down arms, and rightly so, even if the JVP Central Committee is slow to understand the implication.

Politics in Sri Lanka is not what it was when Somawansa and Wijewira started their Marxist movement. Somawansa and his Central Committee have not understood that for a political moment to continue its popularity it has to keep changing with the political situations. Even in the original Marxism, Mensheviks and Bolsheviks had their different opinions, but those are old theories keeping pace with political vagaries.

It is a pity that JVP breaks up, when things are getting heated in the political front. JVP should have joined hands with the President Mahinda Rajapakse from the beginning. It would have then been able to serve the people better. It was a disappointment for the people at large that the JVP did not support the government by being a part of it. The blame for that should go largely to Somawansa Amarasinghe, and then to Tilvin Silva, Anura K.Dissanayake , Lalkantha and their slow thinking Central Committee.

It is still not too late, if the general membership of the JVP calls for changes at the top and demand the reinstatement of Wimal Weerawansa, and Nandana Gunatillake, the political error that the JVP is committing could be corrected.

Somawansa Amarasinghe should step down from being the leader of the JVP, if not the general membership should remove him from that position. Wimal Weerawansa would be a better leader of the party.
