Trond Jensrud, Please Look in the Mirror!

Janaka Yagirala

To Trond Jenstrud,
Labor Party (AP) Reprasentative
Oslo Municiple Council

Dear Trond,

With regard to your statement “The International Community, stamped out all important Tamil organisations by branding them as terrorists, while remaining passive to the misdeeds of the Sinhala government. By doing so, the IC has acted irrationally” made on Saturday, 14th June, 2008 at the Valle Hovin Stadium in Oslo addressing a Pongu Thamil event.

If you want to see who is truly acting blindly and irrationally I’d suggest you to look in the mirror. The Norwegian government has a long history of irrational behaviour such as the forced assimilation of Sami people of northern Norway. How rational and fair is it force Sami people to give their children Norsk names? Similarly would you consider forcing Sami people to attend Lutherean Churches instead of go along with their traditional beliefs?

Nevertheless, would you tolerate a Sami “liberation” organization which bombs innocent civilians traveling in buses and trains? Would you go for a negotiated settlement? Well the history of your country says otherwise. Remember the Sami revolt of Guovdageaidnu in 1852? What did the Norwegian government do to the leaders of the revolt who killed the Norwegian police chief and town merchant and whipped the Lutheran priest of the settler community? Well you executed them! (We would expect you to practice what you preach and cuddle them affectionately) So how rational is it to tell us to “negotiate” and “recognize Tamil statehood” with a group of cowardly terrorists who bomb innocent civilians?

Minorities in Sri Lanka have far more privileges than any minority in the world. Tamil is a national language in Sri Lanka, all government documents are printed in Sinhalese, Tamil and English, Tamils are not forced to come to Buddhist Temples nor give Sinhalese names to their children. Why not follow our example and make Sami a national language in Norway?!

Also Trond, does the name Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad (one of the singers of the famous band ABBA) ring a bell? Is the Norwegian government willing to admit its inhuman persecution of children born to mixed Germen Norwegian parents during WW2? Let me remind you that 2000 years ago after King Dutugemunu defeated King Elara his first two edicts were to respect the gravesite of King Elara and not even lay a finger on people once aligned to him. I think the Norway government can learn a lot from this which comes more than a 1000 years before the Magna Carta! Also even today do you ever hear of an occasion where the SL government has persecuted a surrendered and rehabilitated Tamil separatist? Pilliyalan is now a Chief Minister.

It is thanks to people like you (Solheim, Bauer etc.) that the Norwegian national flag has become a popular combustible item during rallies and demonstrations in Sri Lanka. Indeed you all can be proud of it!

Yours Truly

Janaka Yagirala
