A Stylised Version OF LTTE Propaganda

In Retrospect By Sarath Kumar For LankaWeb
June 17th 2008

The following item carried by Info Lanka composed by Thanjai Nalankilli entitled Place an Arms Embargo on Sri Lanka - Source-TV News Features and dated 16th June 2008 is an affront to the Sri Lankan Government and a ludicrous dispensation of a literate mind put to misuse steeped in misgivings and misconceptions far removed from reality! But more than that it portrays bias and ignorance on the part of the writer and in the manner of a dog barking at the moon in all futility has expressed vain and unsubstantiable concerns about the Tamil people of Sri Lanka in huge exaggeration. That a news portal such as Info Lanka has been courteous enough to display it to the world it however does not screen the blatant accusations this item and its writer has had the audacity to make against a Sovereign Nation.

The simplest arguments one needs to make here in contradiction to this item is that- neither are the Sri lankan Tamils in any danger of their personal safety in Sri Lanka nor is there any need to heed the rhetoric contained in the idealogies of this writer as it is steeped in Tamil Tiger bias and also contains much fabricated lies, innuendo and concoctions typical of LTTE propaganda and needs to be effectively trashed! This said on the basis that the Nation of Sri lanka is fighting a scourge of terrorism and has been for four decades now and on the verge of winning the fight it has also to be surmised that such presentations have only one objective which is to mislead the world and distract the greater issues Sri Lanka has towards restoring what has been perpetrated towards Her intended destruction by terrorists which makes the writer's direction very transparent to the discerning eye and needs to be put into perspective in the best interests of Sri Lanka.

As the more discerning and informed around the world on the issue of the terrorist problem in Sri Lanka would be aware, the Government of Sri Lanka and her armed forces are presently carrying out a military campaign on the verge of eliminating the Tamil Tigers and it is their supportives given to the anxieties that their terrorist champions are about to be eliminated that would indulge in such rhetoric as an attempt to prevent the Government of Sri Lanka in pursuing the cause of justice namely its fight against terrorism!

To everything the writer says in this presentation which is a misrepresentation of facts and unacceptable within the norms of rationality relative to A Nation engrossed in a war against terrorism all the following responses are itemised relative to the accusations and entreaties in support requesting an Arms Embargo which is enhanced paranoia and unacceptable from a Sri Lankan Government standpoint as well as that of the World very much aware of the dangers of terrorism!

Her opening paragraph suggests that "This is time for western democracies to act. Those who gave an international safety net to the Sri Lankan government should now throw at least a lifeline to the Tamil minority. We do not expect the United States of America (USA) or the European Union (EU) to send troops to protect the Tamil minority as they did in Kosovo. All we ask is, “please put an arms embargo on Sri Lanka” on an emergency basis. This should be done now without delay, before the Sri Lankan military acquires large supplies of arms and ammunition. Maybe, maybe, then the Sri Lankan government would see that it could not score a decisive military victory over the LTTE and agree to a honourable political solution.

In response it has to be asserted that Western democracies are not blindfolded to what goes on in Sri Lanka and are perfectly aware of the primary issue that needs addressing - A terrorist scourge which is threatening a Sovereign Democracy of which the Tamil minority are very much a part of in addition to the Sinhala majority despite the disparity in numbers. Western Democracies are concerned that it is the freedom loving citizens of Sri Lanka that are being held to ransom by terrorists and suggestions such as "throwing a lifeline to the Tamil minority is plain and simple rhetoric where there is no such need as they are well protected in Sri Lanka and if there is any source from which they need to be protected it is from the evils of the Tamil Tigers! an internationally known fact!!There can be no honorable political solution to entail the tamil Tigers who know nothing about the meaning of honour and are a bunch of desperate murderers unrelenting and conscienceless to moot even towards their own community!

The analogy drawn to Kosovo is a load of tripe as there are no comparisons that can be mitigating factors and no tangible proof to coroborate it.The Military acquires arms as a means to fight the insurgent LTTE within perfectly legitimate grounds and no violation of International Law!

Re- Sri Lanka’s Duplicity and Western Democracies in contradiction to the assumptions to the contrary :By now the world knows indeed that the Sri Lankan Government has every intention of devolving reasonable powers to the Tamil minority not the Tamil Tigers, something the Tamil Tigers were vehemently opposed to knowing the objectives of the Fait Acompli as they knew their disentitlement to the privilege being false representatives of the Sri Lankan Tamils as well as ruthless terrorists! and hence reluctant to make any concessions that would portray them as ordinary citizens of Sri Lanka and relinquish their mendacities, greed and hunger for their own conception of power which is fast evading them now.

That the Sri Lankan government ministers and diplomats were going around the world proclaiming that they want to “soften” the LTTE militarily to force LTTE to agree to a reasonable solution to the ethnic conflict is a misconception involving word play. While there was magnanimity on the part of the Government to accommodate the terrorists and their theatrics and the terms on an even footing culminating with a ceasefire which was spuriously violated by the terrorists, the Government should realistically have mad a different choice then~ one which would assert the complete destruction of the plague of terrorism which was destroying Sri Lanka.

Now the world knows that it was a wasted effort and that the hand of the Sri Lankan Government has been forced to destroy LTTE and restore a normal Administration unhampered by terrorists where all citizens of Sri Lanka not only have freedom of movement but the freedom to make their own choices unimpeded by threats, intimidations and falsely extracted alliances to the Tamil Tigers which was a hall mark of their modus operandi!! That some of the alluded to western democracies opened a dialogue relative to curbing some of the financial aid which even today has some reservations from some sources was a direct result of the connivances, falsely presented innuendo and underhand skullduggery of forces within Sri Lanka opposed to the present Administration which today has been acclaimed by many righteous and legitimate sources as beinfg on the right track towards the redemtion of All Sri lankans including Tamils from their woes, grievances and griefs at the hands of the Tamil Tiger terrorists . One cannot hide under a bushel the fact that The present leadership of the Nation has been commended for the compassionate treatment of the minorities alongside the Sinhala majority and there is talk of recommending him for the Nobel peace Prize!

For the record the United States of America (USA) that gave some military assistance in the past has not stopped much of it, despite suggesting that the Sri Lankan government should stop its quest for a military solution and go to the peace table an option whaich even the US Administrationhas now come to realise as futile given the continues attrocities of the LTTE albeit in much lesser perspective than previopusly being debilitated for obvious reasons. The USA has increased and strengthened military advice, support and logistics towards fighting the scourge of terrorism which has been a foremost priority of the Bush Administration and even at the time of this response there are communications between Sri Lanka's top Military Brass and a contingent of military leaders from the USA.

Re-the Financiers and Arms Suppliers :They are sources well within their rights to supply as well as Sri Lanka's right to purchase which is an undisputable issue based on a Sovereign Nations right to defend its national security, sovereignity and territorial integrity where the arguments presented that Sri Lanka has no entitlement to these as National priorities have no strength towards acceptance logically or rationally!

All these references mentioned such as the Indian government quietly pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into Sri Lanka with no strings attached. That India is openly with no secrecy as of late due to the increasing threat from the Tamil Tigers to Regional Security and once perhaps involving a degree of confidentiality based on the Tamil Nadu issue is indeed providing rather than, 'gifting' weapons and training to Sri Lankan military are within acceptable norms. China and some Eastern European countries are selling weapons to Sri Lanka. Pakistan has emerged as a major arms seller to Sri Lanka all well within the right of Sri Lanka as a Nation fighting a war against terrorism where the suggestion of risk of total subjugation of the Tamil minority as second class citizens for another half a century or more is a huge myth and exaggeration in addition to refering to the military strength of LTTE (the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) which is more fantasy on the part of the writer and perhaps even wishful thinking! as that contingency at the present and to eternity it is hoped is somewhat brittle!!

All news reports which indicate that LTTE is considerably weakened militarily are factual. They neither put up stiff resistance against the Sri Lankan Military nor make any inroads into their territories in the North ,also a concocted myth where their only prowess now is covert and cowardly infiltration into mainly Sinhalese populated areas and the detonation of suicide bombs as a last gasp prior to their total elimination. If a news item refered to here in an Indian newspaper on April 2, 2008 reported that Sri Lanka had ordered from Pakistan 150,000 rounds of 60 mm mortar ammunition for immediate delivery, in addition to $25 million worth of 81 mm, 120 mm and 130 mm mortar ammunition to be delivered within a month. it has to be a perfectly legitimate acquisition intended to totally decimate and wipe out the Tamil Tiger terrorists! So what of it?

That the Sri Lankan Military will destroy Tamil tigers is a foregone conclusion and that they are not a leverage the Tamil minority has in Sri Lanka is the salient truth based upon the rationale of many freedom loving Tamils who have acolladed the present Administration on many instances often seeking the protection of the majority Sinhalese from the oppressions and intimidations of the LTTE!

In fact it is a hindrance to their progress and posterity. To talk about the 'armed strength' of the LTTE as beneficial, a bargaining tool and advantageous to the Tamils is the simplest portrayal of ignorance and duplicity of the mindset of this writer who has composed an item which exhorts terrorism perhaps on the basis that she is a Tamil who supports terrorism and suggests a panacea to the woes of the Sri Lankan Tamils which is the furthest from the truth! and acceptability.

Western democracies must act now to fully support the onward march of the Sri Lankan Government towards eradicating the Tamil Tigers unconditionally while being fully aware and cognizant of the realities and dangers they pose to Sri Lanka at the end of which a perfectly fair and just solution is arrived at for all of Sri Lanka

Until then this has to be written off as another stylised version of LTTE propagands being put into perspective here where only the style seems significantly eloquent!
