Response Nithendra batutuduwage's articleNimal de SilvaDear editor, Please display my response to his article.
We Sinhalese as a race are a timid and non war like race, just as an average Tamil. We could even class ourselves as cowards and looking back in to past history is not wise, as we were not there that time to see for our selves. The fact is, we lost many a battles, having better weapons and military structure than these determined rebels. In a free and a democratic society as ours, people in the arm forces have the liberty to defect, due to their cowardice and in many cases protected by political patronage. This cant happen in the fascist dominated rebel army where their people are thoroughly and forcefully brainwashed to give their lives to their cause. Due to these different systems, they have the edge over the GOSL.They, the rebels too had the financial support of the Tamil expatiates living abroad.Therfore, knowing the hopelessness of our side, people like Ranil did the next best thing by going for CFA,as the endless war would have demoralized the ground troops and bankrupted the country. CFA has destroyed the tigers financially and morally and to an extent political support from their people, where no bombs or bullets would have done it.Ranil did trap the tigers and if he had stayed a bit longer in power, he would have appealed to the IC to give a safety net against tiger aggression. As one can see, the new rich visiting expatriates are more at peace with the people and the government in the south than with the tigers, resulting in them lobbying against the tiger fundraising, getting countries to ban the tigers etc. This is damaging to the tigers. They have become a pariah orgernization, and this is due CFA initiated by Ranil, the governments thereafter, quite rightly following it up to this day. Imagine a situation where the government has launched an offensive, where pictures of dying civilians are shown all over the world, then we not only have the world governments calling foul, but the Diaspora will double their effort to raise fundsand demonstrate in every city in the world. It is better to prolong the peace process somehow, as it will further weaken the rebels among its supporters.
