Tamils Refuse to Live with
the LTTE; Even after Free Transport and a Tiger Welcome
Dilrook Kannangara
In a decisive move the Tamils of Sri Lanka have refused to live in
their hometowns that are under LTTE control. Instead they have chosen
to pay more than 300 rupees (approx USD 3) a day (average earnings of
a Sri Lankan is lower than this) and live within government controlled
areas. In fact a reasonable place of stay costs at least 1,000 rupees
a day (approx USD 10) and they are willing pay this than live with their
LTTE liberators.
This makes the LTTE liberation struggle a mere sham and a big joke.
Everywhere freedom fighters are engaged in liberating a land mass for
a community, that community stays with their liberators and suffers
with them in their struggle. In Sri Lanka there are no freedom fighters,
instead there are a bunch of terrorists. This also depicts without any
doubt the desire of the people to live in a multicultural society and
not to be divided along ethnic lines.
Then what about those who lobby for a separate state from Switzerland?
They are nothing but a set of hypocritical lunatics who would never
leave behind their European comforts to live in LTTE controlled areas.
They also refuse to be active partners of the Tamil Elam struggle.
Why are the people so scared of the LTTE? Simply the terrorists (calling
themselves ruthless tigers) are uncivilised and barbaric for any decent
human being. It was in April 2006 that the LTTE used a Tamil pregnant
woman to target the Army Commander. This Tamil woman was ravished by
her LTTE liberators and as a result became pregnant; her
pregnancy was used to pass through Colombo security to reach the Army
Headquarters. This is the LTTE way of killing two birds in one stone!
This is the same reason why the majority of the LTTE fighting cadre
is women and girls. Although termed virgin killers they
have long lost that; instead they are being used for the gratification
of LTTE leaders most bizarre fantasies including Tamil Elam. No
wonder people are willing to suffer enormous hardships than live under
the LTTE. Taliban looks a dwarf vis-à-vis LTTE atrocities.
However, depopulation of part of the country has colossal economic consequences
not to mention the adversities high population density brings into other
parts of the country. A large extent of arable land in the North East
has been gone to disuse for more than 20 years; mineral resources that
are in abundance are being wasted; fisheries resources are untapped.
This is the real cost of depopulation and as soon as the war ends, the
government should provide adequate incentives for people of all races
to settle down there and harness these resources. Savings in defence
expenditure should be channelled towards investing in the economic upheaval
in the North and East and benefits should be accrued to the whole populace
and not to a single race.
Infiltrators from terrorist controlled areas should be tracked down
by all means. Their aim is to create maximum bloodshed targeting civilians
and off-duty service personnel. Some drastic measures need to be taken
consistent with the threat. It is a relevant fact that in Iraq, the
coalition forces use checkpoints where remote controlled triggers and
explosives are attached to the ground where the vehicle under scrutiny
parks. Any attempt to cause havoc will result in immediate action averting
any forcible break-ins and suicide attacks. Iraqi insurgents desperation
is too obvious for anyone following world news and also desperate measure
are used to curb them. Although it may be irrelevant to our case, equally
ruthless means should be adopted to ensure civilian security. No vehicle
should be allowed to come from LTTE held areas and the North East. Instead,
their goods should be reloaded to separate vehicles on this side and
the original vehicle should be sent back. All vehicles should be checked.
Search operations and arrests should continue in order to wipe out bloodthirsty
infiltrators and credible suspects should be interrogated using whatever
means available to safeguard the public. Another means of deterrence
is the use of retaliatory attacks that causes much more destruction
to the LTTE. This will ward-off any intended plan to attack government-controlled
areas.
Terrorist targets should be guarded not just from within the target,
but also from outside the target. Had this type of measures existed
in the surrounds of the Central Bank (especially had there been gunners
in the buildings across the road) much of the destruction would have
been averted.
However, as proven time and time again the best means of prevention
is the use of paramilitaries to get rid of the infiltrators.
It is even more productive to get rid of the root cause of all our miseries,
which is terrorism, and terrorists are the cause of terrorism. Get rid
of them all, we need not worry about terror attacks anymore.
