Cabinet Should Not Only Withdraw The CFA But Also Ban The Tamil Tigers.

The Cabinet proposal made in Colombo on the 02 January, put forward by Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse, in his capacity as Minister of Defence, to withdraw the Ceasefire agreement entered between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on 22 February 2002 appears to have come at an opportune time albeit the resonance of the saying "better late than never!" which comes to mind significantly. The very fact that the CFA was permitted to linger on has undoubtedly been costly to Sri Lanka at the expense of lost lives and property but in the best interests of the Nation this is a closure where there will be no further deals with the terrorists.

This is time appropriate to press home the advantage of having the upper hand militarily over the terrorists who even today continue their cowardly attacks as the latest bomb blast in Colombo has been set off in Slave Island which has every hallmark of the LTTE and signifies the importance of not making any compromises that would give the terrorists even the slightest chance to re-group toward even a sporadic attack. The drive to snuff them out is important as to how efficiently it is executed as much as the need to implement fully the Prevention of Terrorism Act, continue the Emergency and undo all the ludicrous agreements with the terrorists a previous Administration in all its stupidity set in place in collaboration with the meddling Norwegian Government.

The proposal which may run into some legal snags, thanks again to a totally imperceptive previous administration led by a block headed leader has been approved by the present Cabinet and it has been further decided to appoint a ministerial cabinet sub-committee to look in to legal aspects of withdrawing the Ceasefire Agreement which may play a key role twards the all important closure this decision will set in place.

The Details of the Cease Fire Agreement which eventually became a smoke screen for the LTTE to regroup and permitted Norway carte blanche to meddle in and disrupt many aspects of the smooth functioning of Governence which was r time and time again disrupted through the mendaciousness of the terrorists whom they helped has been pellucidly outlined by The Asian Tribune as quoted which reports that " According to the Ceasefire Agreement, paragraph 4.4, the agreement shall remain in force until notice of termination is given by either Party to the Royal Norwegian Government. Such notice shall be given fourteen (14) days in advance of the effective date of termination.
The ceasefire agreement was signed on 22 February 2002, between Ranil Wickremasinghe, who was then the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and Velupillai Prabakaran, Leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
This Ceasefire Agreement was said to have been presented to the Sri Lanka Government by Norway who continues to play the role of Peace facilitators for talks between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE.
It was alleged that the CFA legitimize the claims of LTTE having under its control Vanni in the North which consisted of Kilinochchi, Mullaithievu and a section of Mannar districts and also a section of vast land area in the East.
The purpose of the CFA was to hold talks to end the conflict. Unfortunately the talks did not continue as expected and even Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, a creation under the CFA to monitor violations was helpless in monitoring the violations as it was an organization without any teeth to bite.

According to SLMM, it was reported that LTTE violated the CFA more than 3000 times. In fact nothing came out of the CFA violation reportsand LTTE continued with its violation with impunity." end of quote.
What transpired as a result is now infamous history where Norway pulled out of her involvement in the Peace Process somewhat shamefacedly as the skullduggery and contentiousnes of the likes of Eric Solheim and his ilk were exposed together with the duplicity of Norway's involvement where it provided the LTTE with platforms towards their continued existence albeit pretentious towards an independent stance which was eventually exposed as rank duplicity.

The LTTE however met their nemesis the day they decided to take on Lieut. Gen. Sarath Fonseka who having narrowly missed being assassinated has rallied his forces together with all the Armed Forces and Law Enforcement Agencies within Sri Lanka, all of which are proudly gifted with astute leadership who have begun their "tour de force" towards the ultimate objective of wiping out the LTTE and nothing must stand in the way of their progress.

The following exerpts from a public interview by Sri Lanka's Defence Secretary granted to the media once again courtesy of the Asian Tribune puts into perspective the Government's viewpoint of why it seems meaningless to uphold a worthless Ceasefire Agreement when all it does is shackle the Government from its progressive march to eliminate the LTTE and liberate the Nation from their vile crimes against humanity including their own Tamil Community which they falsely claim to represent and provides leeway for them as the LTTE terrorists to continue their criminalities with impunity!

Recently Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse in the interview publicly suggested that CFA is just a joke and it should be scrapped and that the LTTE should also be banned.
Given below is the full text of the relavent portion of the interview with Gothabaya Rajapakse which appeared in the last Sunday Observer.

Q:Do you think that there is a need to abolish the CFA?
A: Yes. The vital fact is there is no CFA and it is just a document. The CFA is a joke. We had signed several peace agreements and they are still in existence.
Indo-Lanka agreement is still there. When signing a new peace agreement, the previous peace agreements should be abolished but it never happened. I think since Thimpu we have so many peace agreements.
I believe that the most sensible thing is that we must abolish the ceasefire agreement. It should be officially end. The CFA is there and every day it is violated making the CFA a big joke.
Officially we should say that there is no ceasefire agreement and we should ban the LTTE because it is a terrorist organisation. I think these two steps - banning the LTTE and officially declaring the abolition of the CFA should be done immediately.
Then the President can come out with a new set of proposals to address the problems of the Tamil people. One should remember that we should not give solutions for the LTTE, which is a terrorist organisation. Our solutions should be for the Tamil people and their leaders.
Q: But President Rajapaksa has recently said that the government will ban the LTTE if they continue to attack?
A: Probably the President wants to give the LTTE some opportunities to come forward for negotiations. But my personal opinion is to ban the LTTE immediately.

There is little more which needs to be said about the imperative need to rescind the CFA, ban the LTTE, set in place all the legal fortifications needed to back the Government's objective to eliminate the LTTE and eventually provide all peace loving citizens of Sri Lanka with their inherant rights and the opportunity to live their lives with no terrorist impediment towards the freedoms they have always been used to prior to the terrorist scourge which began plaguing the Nation almost four decades ago!
