Attack On UNP Headquarters In Anuradhapura Sri Lanka Takes The Life Of Major General Janaka Perera , His Wife And 26 Others

Bulletin ~In Retrospect By Sunil Kumar For LankaWeb

Oct.6th, 2008

"Alas the Glory and the Guts Must Yet Succumb To The Mendacious Means Of The Enemy If The Guard Is Lowered!"

It is with great sadness that the sudden demise of Retd.Maj. Gen. and former Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Australia and briefly Indonesia, has to be reported. Major General Janaka Perera and his wife Wajira along with nearly 26 others were killed when an LTTE suicide cadre blew himself inside the UNP office at Anuradhapura this morning.

It is believed the blast occurred around 8.45 a.m. on Mondsy Oct.6th 2008. It is yet unknown what kind of security the premises of the UNP had in Anuradhapura but once again the mendacious LTTE have targetted a very prominent personality who brought honor and glory to Sri Lanka as a Military Leader and wasted away another precious life, that of a brilliant individual along with many others which is all the more reason why they must be eliminated in their entirety, a task that now rest entirely on the Sri Lanka Armed Forces and may their fortunes as well as their prowess carry them to the ultimate victory, relentlessly and efficiently!

It seems to be a sad irony that Maj Gen Perera who was hated intensely by the LTTE while also being in fear of their lives at the very mention of his name had to be within easy access to their destructive path where some major security vulnerability has been penetrated by them in order to be able to target him. Anuradhapura where the suicide bomb attack took place is in very close proximity to Kilinochchi where the Armed Forces are presently involved in a massive offensive towards ridding the Nation of the LTTE scourge!!

Despite the dangers involved Maj.Gen Perera seemed to have been undaunted at the prospect of being a likely target for his old adversary, brave soldier that he has always been and in this respect he has become not only a martyr for the cause of his country but a very patriotic one as he should be rememembered and revered for generations to come as one of Sri Lanka's finest military leaders.

Maj. Janaka Perera was born on 1, February 1946 in Sri Lanka and had his education at St. Joseph’s College, Darley Road, Colombo. He captained the College Athletic team and also represented college in Rugby. Although he was selected to the University of Peradeniya he opted for a Military career and enlisted in the basic Officer Cadets Course at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, England in 1967/68.

As Commander of the Sri Lankan Army’s Reserve Strike Force he spearheaded all major operations from October 1995 to May 1996 that led to the clearing of the northern Jaffna peninsula of the insurgents. He was also recommended twice for the Weera Wickrema Vibushanaya, the second highest medal for bravery in battle.

Major Janaka Perera presented his credentials as High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Australia to the Governor General of Australia on 21, June 2001. Having completed his term as High Commissioner in Australia, Major Janaka Perera returned to Sri Lanka after a brief stint as Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Indonesia and just recently joined the United National Party (UNP).

He was appointed opposition leader of the North-Central provincial council.

Condolences go out to the families of all those killed in this cowardly attack and may their souls find eternal peace.
