What is The Real Fear behind this surge of displeasure of the Pro-LTTE international Community in the aftermath of the CFA abrogation?

Sisira Pereira, Panadura

Mahinda Rajapaksha, the Executive President whom the citizens of Sri Lanka elected, finally burnt the traitorous CFA and paved way for the kick out of the SLMM crusaders beyond shores.

Immediately after that we are experiencing an unprecedented barrage of international condemnation and expressions of regret and concern about possible escalation of violence in the island, that the extent of such “passionate concern” leads us to wonder whether these “concerned” factions have been in a winter slumber during the past few years, while the CFA was being fully implemented, in order not to notice the thousands of its violations by the LTTE. When there is never an iota of doubt as to how gravely and how frequently the LTTE blatantly violated the CFA, suddenly many parties, both at home and abroad, are up in arms against the legitimate SL government for calling spade a spade.

Now, why is this sudden rush to blame the Government for abrogating the CFA? Surely it is not because the CFA was like some God-created panacea for the LTTE menace. Any child would know that. Then why are all these parties barking at the government and leave the designated terrorists (LTTE) behind to act with impunity?

The reason might be simpler than one would think. Yet it can be assured that their fear is not based on the effectiveness of the CFA to curtail violence and bring peace at all. If the CFA could curtail violence and bring peace, Ranil W, who signed the betrayal of the century would be in power by now and Mahinda Rajapaksha would have become any other but the majority elected President today. It simply did not happen. The public of Sri Lanka was not that dumb. It did not happen due to a simple reason. And that simple reason is the very same reason behind the real fear in these pro-LTTE international and national forces. It is the fear of the united force of patriotic citizenry of this island nation.

When the LTTE’s psychopathic leader Pirabaharan decided to teach the MR government a lesson by forcefully closing the Mavil Aru anicut (when the CFA was in full implementation), the Pro-LTTE forces both at home and abroad thought EElam would be just a couple of steps ahead. Never might have they thought that their favourite hunter would ultimately become the hunted and begin to lose territory by the day to the point that ultimately the so-called invincible LTTE would have to implore to the international community to come help save the dying terrorist organization trapped in their own making. Beginning with the Mavil Aru episode, the patriotic movements rallied behind their elected leader and the converging force that emanated from such unity among the patriotic citizenry of this country saw the government getting stronger in confidence and shift in mode of operation against the LTTE. It also saw the defence forces getting stronger, resilient and becoming a deadly opponent to the terrorists. The two years that resulted thereafter bears testimony to what a united patriotic force could do at decisive moments of history of a Nation.

At first the pro LTTE-forces stayed tight-lipped with the hope that the terrorist Leader Pirabaharan would pull something mind-boggling out of his hat to put the GOSL on the back foot. They stayed praying for the good health and sustenance of the LTTE in the face of a stronger Government and its defence forces. It too did not happen. Finally there came a point that convinced even the most ardent non-believer among them that the LTTE has virtually dug its grave too deep to come out of, unless there came some concerted effort from outside to salvage the wreckage. From that point onwards, we began to hear about bogus human rights watchers crying for safety of civilians (when thousands have been living decades under the LTTE in virtual arrest in the North and in the East), peace activists and theoreticians preaching R2P’s (forgetting the thousands of Sinhalese and Muslims chased out of the North and the East by the LTTE also had R2P’s), bogus military experts ruling out military defeat of the LTTE (when the SL defence forces successfully gained the upper hand) and increased instances of bias in SLMM reports implicating SL defence forces and vindicating the LTTE. Some local politicians started accusing the GOSL of trying to capture jungles and allowing terrorists to escape with their weapons!!

All these foot tackling went on and on amidst which the GOSL and its defence forces never abandoned their journey to rout the LTTE menace from the face of Sri Lanka empowered by unwavering political leadership and battle hardened acumen of the tri forces leaders. The brave soldiers of our nation fought with a commitment, dedication and purpose, each time seeing success over the LTTE terrorists. The terrorists lost their sea going ability, they lost their weapon smuggling fleets of ships, lost the whole East, lost their international face in Tamil Selvan, they could not re-capture Jaffna, and they are fast losing the parts of North by the day. And this is when these pro-LTTE forces started realizing that enough is enough and there should not be any more waiting. Their dearest LTTE was doomed at the hands of a resilient government and a superior defence force. The only option available for these malicious forces was the toppling of the government and , boy, did we not see how pathetically they tried to achieve their goal and failed at the budget vote.

Having failed at the closely contested vote, the pro-LTTE factions realized one thing. They realized that as long as the government means business in the war front against the LTTE, as long as our tri forces are lead with a resolve and conviction to rout the LTTE, the patriotic masses shall always remain with the government not minding petty differences and that this uniting force would reflect in the parliamentary affairs that becomes crucial as it did on the third reading of the 2008 budget. It is this simple truth that transpired in the JVP’s decision to vote to save the government on that day in the face of a concerted effort by the pro-LTTE elements both at home and abroad. And it is this simple truth that brings the jitters to the pro-LTTE factions that are panicking in fear at the abrogation of the CFA. The pro-LTTEers are not stupid not to see the CFA, which was massively opposed by the patriotic forces, as one of the greatest blockades that kept uniting the diversity of patriotic forces behind the Mahinda Rajapaksha administration.

With that blockade successfully dealt with, the patriotic forces would find it easier to unite their strength and empower the president’s hand in the campaign to eliminate the LTTE and thereby the sinister campaigns to defeat the government in a crucial parliamentary vote would seem eternally distant. If the government is not defeated soon, the signs are there that the current security forces' offensive thrust will not diminish until it sees the end of the LTTE. If that resolve continues for another year, the writing is on the wall for the LTTE and its lovers.

And this is why we hear and see a lot of agitation among the pro-LTTE elements regarding the abrogation of an agreement that was never effective in bringing neither peace nor a solution in anyway other than strengthening the cause of the LTTE terrorists. But by all means, let them cry out loud. It is us Sri Lankans against them, the terrorists (bearing arms or supporting them in any which way you would call).

United we stand, and they would fall.
