While Lal Kantha, strikes with his fellow workers, the soldiers die in the North to keep them safe in the South.

By Charles S.Perera

Lal Kantha the JVP trade Union leader is an ugly frog in a deep well. He has shamelessly called a strike knowing very well the serious situation the government is facing, with regard to the war against terrorism in the North, and various development projects in hand.

He is unaware of the reasons for the rise of cost of living. In this respect the media in Sri Lanka has failed to inform the people of the real cause of the high cost of living. It is not particular to Sri Lanka but all developed, developing and under developed countries in the world are faced with this same situation.

The media reports on global price hikes, do not go into details why and how the rise in petrol has raised the prices of every commodity up to what is there for " dinner on the table.".

The following quote from a speech by the USA Presidential Candidate Barack Obama specifies the reason why the prices of every thing has gone up; "….. All of us feel the impact of the global energy crisis. In the short-term, it means an ever-more expensive addiction to oil, which bankrolls petrol-powered authoritarianism around the globe, and drives up the cost of everything from a tank of gas to dinner on the table……"

Why the Sri Lanka media has failed to make the people aware of the reasons for rising cost of living is in allowing political journalists to write on the subject. This is a matter that should be analysed by specialist in economics, and world market strategies>. The political writers, would only make a political issue of it without understanding the deeper aspect of energy crisis.

The increase of salaries will only make matters worse, as price of consumer commodities will keep pace with the money in circulation, and then there should be another strike for further salary increases. Lal Kantha therefore will have enough work, organising strikes after strikes to demand salary increases, to keep up with each round of rocketing prices. The global price hikes could be stopped only by the produces of oil, and speculators .

Therefore, Lal Kantha's frog in the well intelligence, will cause immense difficulty to Sri Lanka, which despite an on going "war" against terrorism, has been able to provide the people a respectable living condition.

It is true that people with low incomes suffer in the continuous price hikes for which the Sri Lanka government is unfortunately not responsible, as it is a global phenomenon. In the present situation the Sri Lanka is faced with, it is not the "belly" the Trade Union leaders should think about, but it is the country and the war against terrorism in the North.

If Lal Kantha is not an ugly frog in a deep well, he should make the workers aware of the reason why they should tighten the belts and be patients for a little more time.

Why a Little more time ? Because our valiant soldiers in the north, perhaps go with empty stomachs, gun in hand to fight the most ruthless terrorists in the world to allow us to live peacefully in a united unitary country. These soldiers fighting in the north while Lal Kantha Organises a Strike, do not know whether they will see the sun rise tomorrow.

While Lal Kantha in his red Shirt commands the workers to walk out of the work places to take revenge from the President and the Government for the rising cost of prices, few of our soldiers may have sacrificed their lives, for Lal Kantha and the workers who would follow him, to be safe and walk on the roads in Colombo, crying slogans against the government caring less for the Armed Forces.
