CANADIAN BUDDHISTS MOURN
THE DEATH OF MORATUWE HAMUDURUWO

A gunanusmarana (Memorial Service) will be held tomorrow (Sunday 12th October 2008 at 4.30p.m. just after the Poya sil-pavarana) at the West End Buddhist Vihara premises to offer merits to the late " Mortuwe Nayaka Hamuduruwo" , the Most Venerable Labugama Wimalatissa Nayaka Thera - a long standing friend of the West End Buddhist Centre, who passed away in Sri Lanka Thursday night (9th October 2008) after a brief illness. Funeral arrangements will be notified later.

In a statement issued this morning, Venerable Kulugammana Dhammawasa Thera, on behalf of the West End's resident monks and devotees, has paid a glowing tribute to the late Prelate mourning his loss. Here's our Nayaka Hamuduruwo's statement:

"We are deeply saddened by the unexpected news of the passing away of the Most Venerable Labugama Wimalatissa Nayaka Thera, The Chief Prelate (Sangha Nayaka), Raigam, Hewagam and Pasyodun Korales of the Malwatte Chapter and ubhaya Viharadhipathi of Purana Vihara, Horetuduwa and Samanpura Sri Gnanawimala Buddhist Centre, Angulana, Moratuwa after a brief illness.

A True Friend of Our Vihara

The late Venerable Nayaka Thera had a special corner in his heart for our Vihara and was no stranger to our Buddhist community here, having visited us on over five different occasions in the past. He was held in great respect both within an outside Sri Lanka and was the youngest monk ever to receive the prestigious title of Sangha Nayaka in recognition of his erudition, piety and his unique skills as a great organizer just a few short years after his Upasampada - Higher Ordination,

Our own devotees will remember him as a - nihatamani - self effacing and affable 'Sanghaptitru' who could instantaneously come down from his lofty position to be their friend and confidant - They'll sure miss his geniality, great sense of humour and camaraderie, qualities that endeared him to his friends and devotees both in Sri Lanka and abroad. He has been a consultant and a virtual mentor to me personally and to my fellow monks at the West End. The nation, as well as the Maha Sangha, has lost a stalwart, a great tower of strength and a national icon.

In deep gratitude we shall offer merits to the late "Moratuwe Nayaka Hamuduruwo" ! May the Most Venerable Nayaka thera attain the immortal bliss of Nibbana!"

(Kulugammana Dhammawasa Thera)
