Prez Rajapaksha at a Point of no Return.

ASOKA S.

Prez Rajapaksha came to power on a mandate to eradicate the LTTE. Despite his initial olive branches, LTTE launched huge attacks on GOSL armed forces making a another mockery of the ill fated CFA.

Rajapaksha, ably assisted by General Fonseka quite correctly concluded that there will be no peace in Lanka unless Prabhakaran is gotten rid of. So started the onslaught against the LTTE. For the first time in this mad war, LTTE is on the run big time. Cudos to Rajapaksha, his Generals and the brave Lankan soldiers. We owe them!

There is a very good reason for the final annihilation of the LTTE. That is the fact that Lanka's economy is so far behind its neighbors. Obviously this trickles down to the average Lankan as poverty. Our infrastructure is in tatters and the cost of living is reaching high heavens. Lankan people are hurting big.

India is spending a mammoth 2.8 trillion US$ on Infrastructure improvement. China a breathtaking 9.3 trillion US$ and East Asia 2.4 trillion US$, according to the Economist magazine. World bank estimates that every 1% increase on infrastructure development tend to raise GDP by 1%. It also believes that the rapid economic development in SE Asia is directly related to its massive investments in infrastructure in the last few decades, not to mention China's blockbuster annual GDP growth of 10% over the last 10 years.

Heading south to troubled Sri Lanka again, none of the above can happen when suicide bombers are all over creating havoc and a venomous snake called Prabhakaran is injecting poison to the Lanka's Economic and Social fabric in the name of liberation. "Liberation my foot" is the natural answer from any rational, civilized human being.

Rajapaksha must maintain the maximum pressure on the northern fronts to converge into the LTTE heartland at any cost. Yes, this is war. Yes, soldiers and civilians both succumb. Yes, nobody except Prabhakaran likes war. But there is no other choice. Prez Rajapksha has come to a point of no return. Let him finish this madness and get on with the most vital issue of nation building. We need roads, bridges, Schools, Airports, Electricity and more right now. This is people's business. This is what governments are all about.

A generation of Lankan youth, Tamil and Sinhalese alike, went awash with their life's dreams thanks to this one megalomaniac. We became poorer. The wealthy and the educated left wholesale for greener pastures of the West. Yes, many a crooked politicians got very wealthy too thanks to the war. But now is the time to end all this.

For Politicians like Ranil and the UNP this is your hour to demonstrate any sense of Leadership and Patriotism you may have. This is no time for Politics. Support Rajapaksha to end this madness. That is what England, France, USA, Switzerland, Poland, etc., did to rid the world of Hitler.

Let us hope and pray that Prez Rajapaksha end this war this year. Let us also hope and pray that he embarks on a path to rebuilding our infrastructure. Finally, least but not last let us hope and pray that he cleans up the country of political crooks and put some in jail too for stealing whatever the wealth left over for the suffering 20 million Sri Lankans, Tamils and Sinhalese.
