Urgent need to defeat LTTE disinformation and propaganda war

Ben Silva UK

His Excellency, Mahinda Rajapaksa
President of Sri Lanka

Dear Sir,

Urgent need to defeat LTTE disinformation and propaganda war

Setting the scene

LTTE is carrying out a massive disinformation and propaganda warfare campaign against Sri Lanka, using many of the resources they have, including use of NGOs, politicians etc. The total lack of support for Sri Lanka, during debate in UK, about Sri Lanka, indicated the poor performance of Sri Lanka, in neutralising LTTE propaganda.

Sri Lanka is simply ‘fire fighting’ against the professional approach of LTTE..

We need a review of what is taking place and produce structures, systems and methods to deal with the problem.

It is time to defeat LTTE propaganda war in a professional manner. It appears that massive LTTE disinformation campaigns pop up like mushrooms. Sri Lanka has to deal with this propaganda war of LTTE urgently. Unless Sri Lanka deal with the problem in a professional manner, creating systems, organisations, methods and procedures to deal with the propaganda war, Sri Lanka will not have much chance of defeating LTTE disinformation campaign.

LTTE have offices in major countries in the world. These offices perform as embassies for LTTE and carry out their propagandas war. LTTE are using the following for their disinformation and propaganda war.

:Hold exhibitions, that propagate malicious disinformation against Sri Lanka.
Petition the Prime Minister.
Organise meetings with multiparty MPs, and do a performance to win the sympathy of MPs.
Visit and lobby MPs.
Entertain MPs.
Invite MPs for various events and functions.
Carry out disinformation campaign, through paid campaigners.

In order to counter their propaganda, Sri Lanka could use similar methods.

LTTE offices, all over the globe function as their embassies and do full time campaigning, disinformation and carry on propaganda war against Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka has almost nothing to combat this organised disinformation and propaganda warfare by LTTE.

The suggestion, many may have thought of this idea, is to restructure the function of our embassies abroad, to include counter disinformation and counter propaganda warfare as one of the priority functions. This is to keep the costs down. The presentation material could be produced at the media centre in Sri Lanka, to keep the costs down. Information related to LTTE atrocities, various literature that appear in media need to be backed up and indexed so that researchers could access the literature easily.

Reports related to Sri Lanka could be issued every six months in a manner similar to the reports issued by ICG, to counter LTTE propaganda issued by ICG.

There also has to be a coordinator that will distribute selected material produced by Sri Lankans, all over the globe to decision makers in the world.

The above suggestion will not be expensive to implement. It is essential for Sri Lanka’s survival and to prevent ending up as Kosovo did.

Yours sincerely,

Ben Silva
