LTTE LOSES COMMANDER BALRAJ AT A CRUCIAL TIME OF WAR

By Walter Jayawardhana

A senior commander of the Liberation Tiges of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) conventional fighting forces, Balraj died of a massive heart attack , the Tamil Tiger headquarters in Wanni announced.

Balraj , the first commander of the Charles Anthony Brigade and planner of such past LTTE victories like Kankasenturai battle , died at a crucial time when his services were most needed and in many areas the Tamil Tigers are fast losing ground , Tamil souces said.

Shocked by the commander’s sudden demise LTTE Supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran has announced three days of mourning in Mulaithivu and Kilinochchi where a tottering outfit is still doing its best to keep its Tiger flag flying the same sources said.

Sources said the celebrated Tamil commander’s death came at 2.00 p.m. Tuesday bringing ominous signs for the already declining power of the Tamil Tigers. Apparently, they said , he died of a broken heart.

“.. Balraj has commanded the Charles Antony Brigade between 1991-1993 and between 1995-1997. “He was an expert on different forms of warfare, including psychological operations, and deployed different tactics during the planning and the conduct of the operations,” the LTTE said in praise of its commander.

Balraj more recently was engaged at Weli Oya and Mannar war fronts where the Tigers have taken many defeats.
