What is true worship?

By Dr. Mrs. Mareena Thaha Reffai

We the 21st century people are amazing. We do what exactly will be the opposite of what intelligent beings would do.

When what is needed is really more of worship and less of show off, we do just the opposite. . We are living at a time of problems, shortage of money and food. Instead of more frugality and practical ways of survival, what do we do? Build larger, more decorated worshipping places. The other day we got an appeal to build a mosque in a very poor village and the cost was over millions. When we went through the estimate we found the reason for the exorbitant price is for imported marble tiles for the floor, ornament pillars etc.

The place of worship should be simple, devoid of unnecessary ornamentation, practical and beautiful. Why our people do not think of this is amazing. This is due to mere show off, as what Allah says in the Quran :

"The mutual rivalry for piling up (the good things of this world) diverts you (from the more serious things), Until ye visit the graves.
But nay, ye soon shall know (the reality).
Again, ye soon shall know! Nay, were ye to know with certainty of mind, (Ye would beware!) Ye shall certainly see Hell Fire!
Again, ye shall see it with certainty of sight!
Then shall ye be Questioned that Day about the joy (ye indulged in)!

(Sura 102 )

It is matter of who builds a larger mosque or more ostentatious one.

We see this among people of other religions too, recently there was an article about the largest Buddha statue, and another one with golden encirclement for a statue. Buddhism too, like Islam frowns upon ostentation, but who cares?

When all these money spent on buildings could easily and profitably be spent on the people- educating them, feeding them, clothing them and housing them, we, the most intelligent beings on the surface of the earth, choose to do otherwise.

Is there any wonder there is suffering in this world, unending?
