Contentious MDMK Leader Vaiko An Abomination To Regional Security

©Insight By Sunil Kumar For LankaWeb ~ Jan. 25th 2008

When MDMK leader Vaiko on Friday 25th Jan.08 demanded that the Indian Administration ask the Sri Lankan Government to remove the Underwater Defence System set up across the Palk strait on the International Maritime Boundary Line in his typically verbose albeit pro LTTE manner, he seemed to be merely displaying his usual contentiousness which continues to be an embarassment to the Indian Status Quo which would in all probabilities be better off either restricting his political activities or barring him from politics altogether.

This is an individual who does not seem to have the hang of any political co-operations between India and Sri Lanka or what it stands for and seems unable to see beyond his confused and totally distorted views often ridiculing even his own political party as well as incurring the wrath of many of his contemporary politicians in India and seems a curiosity that this man who acts more like an ignoramus rather than a politician is tolerated in India's political infrastructure at at all!

He certainly does not augur well for the State of Tamil Nadu which at times seem to be thrown into a state of confusion with his vehement outbursts often myopic and gnat brained to accommodate his own idealogies and has a long history of riding a political roller coaster throwing all cautions and decorums needed of a respected politician, to the winds and which title the man seems the furthest from with his obstreperous outbursts which at times defies logic and rationality and speaks much either for an insecure state of mind or ongoing dementia which he seems to be possessed with!

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a copy of which has been made available to the media, Vaiko has said the Underwater Defence System which is of imperative regional importance would damage and destroy the fishing boats of Indian fishermen as though the fishermen were a greater priority than Regional Security with the various impending threats from the LTTE and their So called Sea Tigers, which entities are being very carefully monitored in the Region by both India and Sri Lanka and it is for outbursts like this that Vaiko has a reputation for infamy laced perhaps with stupidity to moot!

Although not know in what capacity he has made the comment or whether he was in any capacity to comment at all " that the Sri Lankan Navy had communicated to the Indian Navy to inform Tamil Nadu fishermen not to venture out for fishing between Kachatheevu and Neduntheeve in the Palk Strait, as mines had been placed" they have been made in contentious opposition to the joint Regional co-operation between India and Sri Lanka with rank disrespect to the authority of the two Nations and whose stand to secure the region whether by mines, sea patrols or aerial surveillance is a matter for the respective authorities and their jurisdictions of which Vaiko is not a part of and could never aspire to be.

In a somewhat comical fashion demanding ridicule Vaiko has refered to the joint co-operation between Sri Lanka and India on Regional Security in the Palk Strait as "This high-handed action of Sri Lanka government is a naked aggression into the domain of our sovereign rights in International waters," quite forgetting that India is part and parcel of the collaborations involved and a security matter towards the prevention of the spread of LTTE terrorism in the region and beyond where the fishermen's concerns are the least of the worries relative to the issue who have many other areas of the Indian Ocean to ply their trade in!!

Contrary to Vaiko's interpretation that India ceded Kachatheevu to Sri Lanka, which he says " itself was wrong and unjustifiable when the island was given to Sri Lanka as per an agreement and that Indian fishermen were given the fishing rights there" perhaps it now needs to be emphasized that during the time of the agreement there was no real LTTE threat to the region and if the present priorities involved need reversing or re- structuring the agreement to accommodate the greater importance of Regional security while disenfranchising the Fishermen needs somewhat unfortunately albeit imperatively for the greater need, Vaiko's protestations have no credibility!

Mr Vaiko needs also to be advised that it was not any 'daring' on the part of the the Sri Lankan Government to set up an Underwater Defence System which has been done with the full cognizance of the Indian Authorities and their support with no malicious aim to curtail the rights of Indian fishermen as he tries to bifurcatedly and misguidedly explain.

Switching next to a theme which in all probabilities is intended to evoke a tone of sympathy for better effect to his beratings whilst perhaps also showing the Indian Authorities in poor light, he suggests that "There is a sinister design behind this move to threaten and prevent the suffering Tamils of Sri Lanka to reach Tamil Nadu as refugees," which is a manifestation of the very confusions the man uses as a ploy( refered to earlier) to make his point where he needs to confront the reality that Tamils whio fled to Tamil Nadu have been in a far worse plight there than they were prior to their exodus and many are now contemplating a return to their homeland desperately given their awareness of the many concessions the Government of Sri Lanka is prepared to make towards their well being and posterity!

There is no liability for the Sri Lankan Government to remove the Underwater Defence System which if it is in accordance with the Indian Government. To the contrary both Governments should take steps to revamp the Kachatheevu agreement towards the measures needed for Regional Safety and put a lid on Vaiko's voice in the wilderness of his own interpretation! which in itself is an abomination to Regional Security and perhaps a shining path for the LTTE.
