Why Karuna Needs To Be Redeemed From The British Authorities And Fast!

©In Retrospect By Sarath Kumara For LankaWeb

Jan27th 2008

Mr Shripal Nishshanka's submission captioned "HELPING KARUNA AMMAN IS A MATTER OF NATIONAL SECURITY " has more than a ring of truth to it and needs to be reiterated and endorsed towards Governmental cognizance that he is deserving of redemption from the British Authorities who are ably backed by the LTTE diaspora and residue of anti Sri Lankan elements in the UK and the sooner the necessary appropriate action is taken towards the cause the better.

There can be no sweeping under the carpet of the circumstances and persons responsible for what seems a bungled international matter where the protocols appear somewhat messed up and a diplomatic passport causing the furore totally unnecessary. It is hoped there will be proper atonement for what appears to be a Governmental Faux Pas albeit at a lesser level than the Foreign Office and perhaps obligatory towards Karuna having been more of an asset than a liability towards the liberation of the oppressed Tamils and Muslims in the North and East of Sri Lanka with invaluable assistance provided to the Armed Forces undeniably albeit a somewhat bitter pill for the Staus Quo to swallow for obvious reasons.

In the aftermath of Karuna's arrest and sentencing in London England to a misdemeanour under the ID Cards Act for possessing a false passport, very appropriately as Mr Nishshanka has pointed out it is only fair to recognize that Karuna is a true hero who stood bravely against one of the most notorious murderers in the world Velupillai Prabhakaran.

Admittely and to his chagrin nonetheless Karuna has indeed a tarnished past in Sri Lanka under LTTE Terrorist Leader Prabhakaran but has openly denounced the past and come clean having realized the true picture of the Wanni murderer whilst acting with conscience and repentance. He joined the common man and started eliminating the Wanni murderers to his maximum capacity. There is no getting behind the important role he has played and it might be euphemised that his importance towards eliminating the Tigers may have been conditional to the relentless pursuit by the Armed Forces of the Prabhakaran led terrorists which has now virtually sealed their elimination!

As the Nishshanka submission points out, despite the nature of Karuna's statement to the British authorities sounding garbled and inconclusive the greater implication of what the man has done for the Nation of Sri Lanka has to be recognised without compromise and only fair that the Sri Lankan authorities attempt to make ammends for his inadequacies and bail him out of his predicament on the basis that Karuna is a Sri Lanka Nation friendly individual and perhaps a future leader of the Tamil Community possessed of saner and more rational faculties than his terrorist opposit number Prabhakaran.

There can be no denying that for many freedom loving people in the North and East of Sri Lanka oppressed by the tyranny and psychotic criminalities of Velupillai Prabhakaran, Karuna Amman as he is popularly known is a true hero who has bravely stood up against the barbaric Wanni Leader and openly challenged him.It has also become a fact of life for the LTTE criminals on the run that Karuna's covert operations provided a threat to the blood thirsty Wanni murderers kept at bay for sometime through Karuna's ingenuity and resolve before Sri Lankan Armed Forces were granted their fullest authority by the Sri Lankan President to fight the terrorists with no compromise nor reservation!

There can however be no justification for the Sri Lankan Defense Ministry if it has assisted Karuna in going to the UK under a falsified Diplomatic passport and the matter needs to be investigated to the fullest where more often than not individualistic bureaucratic bungling ends up being the culpable source with no direct links to the highest level of Government while it is also understandable that steps taken by the Government if it was to befriend an ally who has been invaluable in the fight against Prabhakaran and his criminals towards protecting him from their efforts to eliminate him despite the wrong modus operandi has a case for argument and of course restitution.

It would be an understatement as Mr. Nishshanka has also pointed out that Karuna was involved to a large degree in eradicating terrorism from Sri Lanka in a significant way and that the threat he faced from the Sri Lankan organizations opposed to his direction and international bodies including the LTTE supportive Tamil Diaspora was severe. The personal observation that "Modern Don Juan Dharmapala alias traitor Ranil Wickramasinghe and his clowns are driven by a compulsion towards harming Karuna all the time where Ranil moans the existence of Karuna's Party today and never utters anything condemning his 'twin brother Prabha's' atrocities." has to be acknowledged as emphatic towards what prevailed within Sri Lanka at the hands of the LTTE and the reason for their seemingly uncontrollable surge of terrorism which thanks to the likes of Karuna and the resolve of the commanders of the Armed Forces is a thing of the past today!

It would be a travesty of real justice if Sri Lanka turns a blind eye to what may be a miscarriage of justice by the British authorities in incarcerating Karuna in reality deserving Sri Lanka Folk Hero status with no attempt to redeem him on the part of the Sri Lankan authorities while he could also be targetted by the LTTE predators running around scot free in the UK in a worst case scenario.
