Depending on Political Eunuchs for a Potent Solution is Disastrous

Dilrook Kannangara

This nation needs a political solution for its conflict. There is little disagreement on that. A viable and potent political solution must achieve two main things; it should strengthen pro-Sri Lankan forces and cripple anti-Sri Lankan elements. Going by democratic norms, such a solution must be made by elected representatives of the people. However, there are many elected representative who serve Tamil Elam to the detriment of Sri Lanka. Most anti-government TNA, SLMC and UNP legislators are pro-Tamil Elam to their core. They have committed enough acts of treason to land them in prison and suffer civic disability for the rest of their miserable lives. Their leaders have photos taken with the LTTE terror leader with smiles when maggots would have when their reach faeces.

One of them resigned from the government recently grunting over some self-created piggery. But most importantly all three party leaders have active Memoranda of Understanding with the LTTE. Their total conduct is strictly governed by these MoUs and would not dare breach them. Fifth reason is that all of them, sparing none, campaigned violently and vigorously against the President at the 2005 Presidential Election. It was so violent that one of them had his paramour burning herself in front of his very house! This is the character of anti-Sri Lankan legislators and these are the very same lawmakers who would approve a political solution for the underlying causes of the conflict!

These elements are nothing more than political eunuchs. They are ardent Tamil Elamists but for the purpose of enjoying the benefits of MPs have taken the oath of allegiance to Sri Lanka. Depending on them to solve the biggest problem faced by the country is hilarious if not dangerous.

Not learning from past mistakes may be a genetically inherited to Lankan leaders. In 2000, immediately after winning the 1999 Presidential Election, President Kumaratunga reinitiated work on her political package. Fearing total political annihilation if a general election was called in the immediate aftermath of the 1999 December Presidential election, the UNP leader came for discussions and promised to co-operate. Indeed he co-operated with President Kumaratunga to the extent that the winning trend of the PA diminished over time due to delay, the fall of the Elephant Pass Camp, cost of living increases and the resultant unpopularity. It took almost eight months to bring the devolution proposals to parliament and by that time the UNP leader has stopped co-operating any further. His fellow UNP legislators burnt the devolution proposals inside the House!

The TULF also rejected the devolution endeavour. President Kumaratunga lost not only her devolution campaign but also the vital election advantage for a 1989-style strong parliament immediately following the 1999 election win. As a result a weak government was formed by the President’s party. The new SLMC leader declared a Perumal-style separate state in the East and left the government. Unfortunately the piggery continues as the same group has hailed Kosovo and avowed to emulate it recently. All these groups threatened to bring down the government in 2001 and as a result the parliament was dissolved and in the subsequent election a UNP-SLMC-TNA coalition came to power and within just two months of assuming office betrayed the nation by signing an illegal agreement named CFA. The ills of the CFA are still felt by the people, the latest of which occurred in Mount Lavinia last Saturday. The CFA even lead the LTTE to a Kosovo style UDI scheduled to be declared on 18th January 2008 from a Kosovo-style protectorate the CFA created for the LTTE.

Therefore the conduct of UNP-SLMC-TNA leaders has been highly opportunistic and political. This is exactly the opposite of what is required for a ‘political’ solution. An effective political solution must be made without looking for petty political advantages and with a patriotic mind.

In this context, President Rajapkse’s attempt to amass the support of these proven traitors, opportunists and enemies is also going to end up in disaster. According to Einstein, doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome is a sign of insanity; doing it with the same actors and enemies must be much worse!

The need of the hour is to amass the support of patriotic forces within and outside the parliament to support a pro-Sri Lankan nationalist political solution based on popular support. Petty politics, racist/racial-minded political parties and proven traitors must be kept out of it. A successful political solution must compliment the military campaign and not contradict it. Therefore those political parties that are against the present military campaign would never agree to a successful political solution.

President Rajapakse promised an integrated campaign to defeat all anti-national forces at the commencement of this year. There is no need to waver on that two months into the year. Amassing all national forces disregarding petty party politics and instigating legal action to punish traitors is the way forward.
