TAMIL LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCILLOR IN SINHALESE MAJORITY AREA SHOT DEAD BY SUSPECTED TAMIL TIGERS

A.N. Muthulingam, a Tamil Deputy Chairman of Moneragala Pradeshiya Sabha , a local government authority bordering Eastern Province has been assassinated by suspected assassins of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) . \

Moneragala, although not in the Eastern Province, but in the Province of Uva, where places like Buttala, Katharagama and Moneragala have been the target of the Tamil Tigers who are supposed to be hiding in the adjacent Eastern jungles after the Tigers lost Eastern Province.

Muthulingam, an ethnic Tamil who was elected to the local body in the Sinhalese majority area also belonged to the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party, led by President Rajapaksa.

“When the victim was at his residence in Moneragala town, the unidentified assassin came in a van and shot him with a pistol about 6.15 p.m. , March 29,” the Police said.

“Muthulingam who was an indigenous medical practitioner was attending to his work at the time of the shooting,” the police said.

Though the victims was taken to the hospital at Moneragala immediately, he succumbed to the injuries , police said.
Muthulingam (54) is a father of three children.
