ATTEMPTS TO SAVE THE TERRORIST LEADER AND THE BOOTLICKER
Part I

A.A.M.NIZAM MATARA

“Wipe out terrorism totally, liberate remaining Mullativu/Killinochchi districts and uphold the unitary status and the sovereignty of the nation”. This was the loud and clear message given by the toiling masses of the North Central and rural folk of the Sabaragamuwa provinces in the recent Provincial Councils Election. The UNP strongly protested against the dissolution of the two provincial councils and holding the election. Ultimately the elections turned out to be a battle for and against the war with UNP and its new found strange bedfellows JVP presenting all sorts of allegations against the conduct of the war with each UNP candidates spending 10 to 20 Million Rupees from unknown funding sources. Upon failing all attempts made to defeat and reverse the war strategy the treacherous UNP, which opposed holding of Eastern Province Local Government Elections and Eastern, North Cental and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council Elections are now calling for a General Elections with a hidden agenda of halting the war, and to resuscitate the terrorists from total annihilation and the terrorist darling Ranil Wickremasinghe from getting deposed from the party leadership.

When the government was forced prematurely to dissolve the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils that became ungovernable due to the unruly behaviour of new found UNP-JVP nexus the foul-mouthed UNP General Secretary strongly protested to the Commissioner of Elections against the dissolution of the Councils by respective Governors of the Provinces.

The UNP General Secretary who now calls for holding a General Election with hidden motives and acting on the agenda of vested interests, in a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Elections on 13th June, 2008 strongly demanded “not to act in anyway under the provisions of the Provincial Councils Elections Act No: 2 of 1988 as amended and in particular not to take steps to hold election in the administrative Districts of Ratnapura, Kegalle, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.” UNP and their new found ally JVP even went to Courts in a bid to prevent the elections.

Ultimtely they entered the fray and spent a colossal sum to buy over the voters and garner public opinion against the war and thereby boost the new neo-colonialist species called R2P gangs to intervene in the country. The failure of the two UNP candidates Nihal Jayawardene and Sandith Samarasinghe who publicly claimed that they will be spending 10 Million rupees each to get at least 22,000 odd preferential votes and get elected from the Kegalle district, gives a simple clue to guess how many millions the seven candidates who obtained 22,597 preferential votes and above must have spent in the elections? How many billions of rupees all the UNP candidates in both provincies could have spent? Who provided these funds? These are questions the UNP leadership needs to answer if it indeed is a responsible political party.

After spending all these billions and losing all the 27 Electorats including the 5 electorates they won in the Presidential Election the so-called democratic political party which exposed its anti-democratic fangs by going to courts against holding elections, which profusely criticised the former President for dissolving the Ranil Wickremasinghe government and holding premature elections, is now shamelessly calling for a premature General Election, at a time the general pubic all over the country from East to West, and South to North, devoid of ethnicity, religiosity and other differences loudly and unitedly champion for the unhindered continuation of anti-terrosit operation and call for liberation of the country. The UNP’s attempt to swim against the populist tide vividly exposes its anti-national and pro-eelamist character.

The UNP’s anti-national fresh adventure is strongly backed by the treacherous elements which raucously criticise the President and do not fail to miss the slightest opportunity to slander and denigrate the President, the Defense Secretary, Security Forces Commanders and other government leaders.

The weekend and midweek mis(leader) rag sheets are notorious for presenting everything related to this government negatively and mislead the masses with sheer speculations and distortion of the truth. It was nauseatingly critical, particularly of the government’s liberation operation and leave no stone unturned in its attempt to mislead the masses the Northern Liberation Operation as an unwinnable futile costly effort prone to cause a gross human tragedy. These pubications carried Anti-war news commentaries under banner headlines such as “Infinity and beyond : A War without End”, “MR faces checkmate scenario”, “Bloodshed and War mark abrogation of CFA”, “Gotabaya’s belligerence may cost Sri Lanka the GSP plus”, “A reality check on War and Peace”, “Playing Russian Roulette with the Troops”, “Spending Millions on Elections, Freezing wages and the HR nightmare”, “Taking masses for asses”, “Lessons from Darfur and the missive from US Congress”, “A Trauma in the Wanni”and so on.

In one of the aforementioned news commentaries, highly critical of the government’s decision to hold Provincial Council Elections in the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, these rag sheets had the following to say:

“Elections cost a huge amount of money which has to be met by the Treasury not to mention the millions more that are poured into the campaign, and at a time the government says it has no money to meet the salary demands of the judiciary, health, education and other sectors the questions that necessarily will be asked by the affected groups is why the president is then spending millions on unwarranted elections. Unwarranted, it is argued because, both the Sabaragamuwa and North Central provinces have one year more of its term left and a majority in both councils had in writing informed their respective governors not to dissolve the councils since there was no threat to its majorities.”

It was utterly surprising and astonishing to find a sudden U turn in these (mis)leader rag sheets last week. Any simpleton can conclude that there is a hidden master gameplan when a publication that was right throughout critical of the PA governments and ferociously disparaging President Rajapakse and his actions suddenly turning to flatter the President, and attempt to advice him. Contradicting their own strong ciriticisms about holding prematured election and the huge cost that would burden the struggling masses, the notorious fair lady who is also described as “Lap Dog Journalist” by some fellow journalists was advocating the President to hold a snap General Election comments as follows, perhaps with an imagination that the President would bite her bait:

This is what she said: “For the government freshly emerging from a euphoric victory in the Sabaragamuwa and NCP polls, the idea of a snap general election may not seem much of a challenge. Meanwhile for the government such a snap election at this time may prove advantageous. Having taken all 27 electorates in the two provinces where the Sinhala Buddhist sentiment was strongest, Mahinda Rajapakse would know that the poll was more a referendum for the war and an endorsement of himself personally – a man who has yet to lose his political shine.

Moreover an early general poll would also be advantageous given that the government obtained a clear majority in these PC polls with the smaller parties like the JVP decimated and reduced to two seats in Sabaragamuwa and one seat in the NCP.

Indeed a delay in a call for a general election may leave room for other issues like the economy or even a military setback to emerge. It remains to be seen however if he would take up the parliamentary polls challenge or go for provincial council elections in the other five councils and continue to test the waters.”

It is clearly indicative that reactionary and treacherous elements through these manoeuvres are making a final endeavour to disrupt the Anti-Terrorist War and reverse the battlefront gains and save the terrorists. Another person to join in this Twin Plan of “Save the Tigers and Enliven the Eelam” and “Crush Plans to Depose the UNP Leader”is the despicable politico Managala Samaraweera. He has been suddently fished out from the political dustbin to act as the fall guy of the serial loser Ranil Wickremasinghe and save the terrorist leader who is alleged to be one of his distant relative.
