USD 23 MILLION SOFT LOAN FROM SAUDI ARABIA TO BUILD COLOMBO’S EPILEPSY AND NEURO TRAUMA HOSPITALS

By Walter Jayawardhana

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will provide 20 .25 million US dollars for a new epilepsy hospital for Colombo and another 3 million US Dollars for the extension of the Neuro Trauma Center of the Colombo General Hospital.

The 15,000 square meter 242 bed epilepsy hospital will be the first of its kind for the country.
The extension to the Neuro Trauma Center will add units to the buildings of the General Hospital which are being completed now.

The Arab News of Saudi Arabia announced these soft loans to Sri Lanka quoting Riyadh Al-Kheneini, charge d’affaires of the Saudi mission in Colombo.

He said the loan will be provided through the Saudi Fund for Development.
Yousef Al-Bassam, vice chairman of the SFD, and by P.B. Jayasundera, secretary of the Lankan Ministry of Finance and Planning, signed the deal last week.

“At present there are no such facilities to treat epilepsy patients and the establishment of the proposed hospital will meet the long felt need of the health service in Sri Lanka,” Jayasundera said.
Saudi Arabia provided a loan of SR45 million for the construction of the Neuro-Trauma Center at the Colombo General Hospital in 2002; the construction of the building is nearly completed. The supplementary grant is for the extension of the project, Jayasundera said
