Peace Process In Its Present Form May Just Be A Waste Of Time Unless The LTTE Comes Clean And Relents.

The writing appears to be unmistakably on the wall for the UNF led Norway backed Peace Process that it will eventually turn out to be a Utopian Dream in as far as curbing the Tigers.
The Government in foresight is already expressing pessimism and the "Don't Expect Miracles At First!" slogan quite audible and visible with cabinet ministers G.L Peiris and Tyronne Fernando already floundering in the quagmire of indecision they have fashioned out for themselves through their baseless verbosity and ungrounded speculations, gnat minded at times and contradictary too!. Now the tune has changed to a "Series of continued talks "which according to Government Sources is expected to last half a year at least and probably at the taxpayers's expense !!.

The Indian Government in the meantime is vehemently 'sticking its guns' about the prime importance of bringing to justice the notorious Prabhakaran and his nefarious cohorts and has unequivocally declared their disinterest in the so called Peace process and asserting its support for an Undivided, Sovereign, Democratic Sri Lanka in showing its veiled disapproval of the Wickremasinghe Administration's bartering with terrorists and sending a message that they are observing the goings on in their neighbour's environs with renewed interest.

The Indian Government obviously is treading a logical path in its assertions that it does not trust the LTTE and nor is it willing to accept the blarney being poured out by them that their intentions are truly honorable when their track record is pitiful in its insincerity and rank disregard for human life, limb and the very infrastructure of the Sri Lankan Administration which they openly ridicule with their arrogant demands and carry on regardless as though they were innocent victims misjudged for their criminality and deserve a respite to which India and a greater part of the Westen World is now saying "Not So!"

There are shaky indications that certain apprehensions do exist within the Government, which under great pressure from its Opposition have now changed their tune about de- banning the LTTE from' unconditionally' to a re-imposable ban in the event of failure of the negotiations and as hollow as it sounds may be a little too late if by a sheer stroke of misadventure the LTTE guns begin to boom from their re-fortified positions with their strengthened cadre in a worst case scenario as intelligence reports show. Could this insecurity be the reason for the recent Government bulletin about Military Exercises with the USA and the indication that there may be an American military presence in Sri Lanka ere long and welcomed by many yet opposed by some as dreaded visions of Vietnam and Cambodia come to mind? Nevertheless it may turn out to be a necessary evil if the reality unfolds and a definite deterrent to the LTTE towards ever resuming attrocities .

It has never been a confidence builder in the minds of the Sinhala Nation that the Peace Process is one of equal assertions towards peace by both sides. The Government has literaly bent over backwards in acceding to LTTE demands which are not only dangerous to the Security of the Nation but also a compromising of the Constitution and Democracy and a virtual concession to eelamist demands. The LTTE for their part have never denounced their objectives, nor agreed to lay down arms and come to the bargaining table cleanly. Sadly the pursuance of Peace in this mode seems a total waste of time.

That is unless the LTTE even at this late stage re-consider the futility of their posturing towards peace falsely with ulterior motives in mind! come clean and open themselves in all sincerity by denouncing their objectives officially and agreeing to a de-commissioning of weapons and be counted as a part of mainstream Sri Lankan Society whose sole interests are to be penitent for their notorious past and collectively hand over their ringleaders of infamy to be brought to Justice by the Authorities demanding it and carry on with their normal lives if this is in any way possible.

After all has not the sudden taste of Peace within the Nation inspired them to realise that the only way towards re-building Sri Lanka is through compassion for its beauty and that of her people and a relenting of the wretched past which has destroyed so much when it could have been unified and preserved through the will of all its sons and daughters into being the Once Proud Nation She Was and live side by side in peace and harmony?
