KARUNA
SENT FROM A JAIL TO AN IMMIGRATION DETENTION CENTER
by Rangajeewa Rajakaruna

Karuna Amman alias Vinayagamurthy Muralitharan , the former leader of
the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) has been released from a
British jail and detained in an immigration centre, May 8. British Home
Ministry source said, “ He is detained under immigration powers of the
government.” It is customary for the British authorities to request
the Sri Lanka High Commission in London to issue temporary travel documents
for him to be deported to Sri Lanka. Those travel documents are different
from a passports and a limited to a piece of paper carrying the photograph
of the traveller. Sri Lanka High Commission sources in London said so
far they have not received a request for the issuance of such a document
from the British Home Office. He fled to Britain, where his wife Vidhyawathie
and her three children are living in London and got arrested, November
2 2007 for travelling with a forged diplomatic passport. He was later
convicted on the offence and spent time in the jail. Political analysts
say the breakaway of Colonel Karuna, the man who was in charge of the
Eastern Province under the LTTE was the beginning of the end of the
Tamil terrorist outfit. After his departure the LTTE lost the sprawling
Eastern Province to Sri Lanka government security forces. Karuna’s departure
is believed to have supplied a pot of gold in intelligence to the Sri
Lankan forces to drive away the Tamil Tigers from the province. During
his days under the LTTE he is believed to have carried out the most
ruthless commands of his then leader Velupillai Prabhakaran. His child
soldiers supplied a constant source of manpower to the LTTE and he once
ordered to kill 600 Sinhala and Muslim police officers point-blank in
Nazi style, in the Eastern Province jungles of Thirukkovil, after they
surrendered to him. Much of the large amount of money Karuna is supposed
to have brought from Sri Lanka is believed to have been invested with
the help of a Tamil activist living in London owning some Hindu temples
and operating with India’s RAW concerning Sri Lankan affairs.-Full

FIVE
MEN NOW CHARGED IN THE LTTE TERRORIST CASE IN LONDON ARE REMANDED AND
WILL BE PRODUCED IN OLD BAILEY ON MAY 23
By Walter Jayawardhana
The four
men including Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) de-facto leader
in London, A.C.Shanthan who were charged for funding and procurement
for terrorism in Sri Lanka were produced in the City of Westminster
Magistrates’ court and were remanded in custody until 23rd of May. A
fifth man is also charged in the same case, but the Scotland Yard refused
to give his name. The men were arrested in London, Wales and Swindon
last week in dawn raids. And from remand custody they were produced
in the main Criminal Court of the Old Bailey on May 23, a spokesperson
for the Scotland Yard said. According to the charges the suspects are
accused of possessing laptops, antennas and high-powered magnets for
terrorist purposes. A Scotland Yard spokesman earlier said the arrests
of the men, aged 33, 39, 46 and 51, were part of a long-term investigation
into support for overseas terrorism in Sri Lanka. The suspects who were
produced in the courts were:
Arunachalam Chrishanthakumar, also known as AC Shanthan, 51, of Norbury,
south London Jegatheswaran Muraleetharan, also known as Muralee Tharan,
46, of Newtown, Powys
Jeyatheswaran Vythyatharan, also known as Vithy Tharan, 39, of Newtown,
Powys
Murugesu Jegatheeswaran, also known as M Jegan, 33, of Mitcham, south
London.
The men are charged with conspiring to receive equipment for terrorist
purposes between January 2003 and December 2006. The equipment they
are accused of possessing also included head torches, radios and navigation
systems. A fifth man has already been charged in connection with the
investigation, Scotland Yard said. They refused to release his name-Full

Eastern
Provincial Council Election 2008; Golden opportunity to end Tamil and
Muslim Communal politics, wipe out LTTE terrorism from the East and
to lay the foundation for permanent National Integration.
Dr. Sudath Gunasekara (SLAS) President
Mahanuwara Senior Citizens Movement
25.April.2008.
The present Eastern Province comprises a major part of the once prosperous
ancient Ruhunu Rata east of Mahaweli and a part of Rajarata south of
Maha Oya that falls in to Kokilai Bay north of Trincommallee. In area,
it is the second largest province next only to NCP with a very long
coastal line opened to the vast eastern sea, a heaven for tourism, and
of cause Trincommalle, famed to be the best natural harbour in the Eastern
world, dubbed as the Gibraltar of the East. With a population of about
9.75m (1981census) and an average density of 97.55 per sq km, it has
the largest extend of vacant land for future agricultural development.
This sums up the enormous potentials available within this province
for future development in agriculture, fishing, tourism aviation and
activities associated with shipping and trade. But since this region
was terrorized by the LTTE for the past two and half decades the people
of this province had to undergo enormous miseries and hardships often
paying even with their own lives. It was only with the recently concluded
liberation of the east by the present government that these innocent
people breathed a sense of freedom after a long period of terror, murder
and uncertainty. -Full

The link between Opposition Politicians and Human Rights 'Activists'
Secretariat for Coordinating the
Peace Process (SCOPP)
08th May 2008
The Peace Secretariat has often noted that perhaps the most insidious
threat to the efforts of the Sri Lankan government to promote peace
through pluralism and democracy comes from political opponents who will
say or do anything to promote their own agendas. It is accordingly grateful
to a few determined opponents of the government who masquerade as disinterested
proponents of human rights and democracy for proving its point. Thus
the website Lanka Dissent, a project as it calls itself of the Centre
for Social Democracy, has an article citing a letter from Nimalka Fernando,
now wearing yet another hat as Consultant to the Campaign for Free and
Fair Elections (CAFFE). Lanka Dissent begins its article with the assertion
that 'The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections has rejected an allegation
by Media Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa that the local poll monitoring
body has UNP supporters as its members.' In all fairness to Ms Fernando,
it is unlikely that even she would have said that in her letter, since
the article goes on to say 'CAFFE has supporters of the UNP as well
as of other parties, and your statement is either irresponsible or an
attempt at distorting a fact, its letter to Minister Yapa says.' -Full

NOT
JUST 'DICTATOR AWAITING', BUT LEADER LIKE REAL DICTATOR CAN ONLY BRING
THE COUNTRY BACK TO THE CORRECT COURSE!
Shripal Nishshanka
The opposition leader Ranil Wickramasinghe yesterday called President
Rajapaksha a 'dictator awaiting'. A main reason for the present president
to act like a dictator sometimes is Ranil Wickramasinghe himself. Since
Mr. Wickramasinghe got his hands on to the reins of the opposition leader,
he is extremely busy tarnishing the image of Sri Lanka, its government,
armed and security forces and supporting terrorists in a real shrewd
way. On the other hand, more than twenty national and international
NGOs are also trying hard to push the country into a dark corner with
manipulated records of Human Rights. These so called NGOs are mostly
dead silent whenever the terrorists attack a civilian target. Their
main objective is also to support the terrorists. These NGOs are urging
the UN to reject Sri Lanka's bid for the membership in the UN Human
Rights Council. Unfortunately President Rajapaksha has to fight the
terrorism with in and out. This will be the case until Sri Lanka gets
a genuine opposition leader who will fight the terrorism and poverty
as a united country together with the elected government. Under the
present circumstances, a real patriotic leader of Sri Lanka has no any
other option but to act like a dictator to keep the country in the correct
course. This dictatorship shall be within certain democratic rules just
to tame the evil forces who try to damage the unity and the sovereignty
of Sri Lanka. -Full

That
speech on human rights, media freedom and sins
S. Akurugoda
Speaking at a ceremony held to commemorate the 15th death anniversary
of President Premadasa, Mr Ranil Wickramesinghe has said under the Premadasa
regime, unlike now, there was media freedom and even permitted human
rights organisations to visit Sri Lanka to observe and comment on the
allegations against his administrations. According to the opposition
leader Ranil Wickremesinghe , today's media is silent about the so-called
'violating human rights', 'media freedoms' and 'sins' said to have been
committed by the Mahinda Rajapaksa government. Although it is a good
practice to say nothing bad of those who have dead and gone, those who
live in Sri Lanka during the infamous 'Bheesana Samaya' in late 1980s
cannot simply erase their memories and keep quite, especially, when
treacherous politicians are trying to mislead people making use of even
the good practices to fulfil their sinister motives. Those who have
seen young boys and girls burning with tyres around there neck, almost
every where, and those who have read and heard about the killing of
personal (in thousands, some after taking into police custody) wonder
where were those human rights champions, their observations and comments
as claimed by the opposition leader. As we remember, no organisation
(UN, NGOs, INGOs, so called international community of the west, foreign
diplomats etc) were concerned about the loss of lives of those misguided
Sinhala youth and their leaders and the way they were tortured and killed.

UN
Scandals - too many to mention
Shenali Waduge
There is a saying that people who live in glass houses should not throw
stones ... it seems the perfect advice to the swanks of the UN who find
themselves plagued with scandals involving financial, sexual & human
rights. The UN is faced with the same sets of allegations that they
have been accusing member states of committing. The scandals raise one
simple question only - Does the UN have any moral right to point its
accusing finger upon any member state before they put their own house
in order? The UN Charter was signed on 1st October 1945. The ambitious
preamble to the Charter read "to save succeeding generations from the
scourge of war... to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights... to
establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations
arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be
maintained, and to promote social progress." The UN's celebration of
60 years existence was no easy journey. It rode the storms of division
that highlighted conceptual differences between Western & Eastern thought
& countries that bore clear demarcations of where each was aligned to
& obviously raised what type of rights to include in the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights. It was towards the 1960s that many third-world nations
too joined UN member status.-Full

LTTE:
Rising Desperation
By Ajit Kumar Singh, Research Assistant,
Institute for Conflict Management
Paper was first published in South Asia Intelligence Review (SAIR),
Volume 6, No. 43, May 5, 2008 Two light aircrafts of the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) carried out an air attack on the security
forces (SFs) forward positions in Welioya, 280-kilometre northeast of
Colombo in the morning of April 27, 2008, but no injuries or damages
were caused in the ‘air raid’, military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara
disclosed, adding, "The LTTE planes have returned safely to their hideouts
in the Wanni after dropping three bombs." Earlier, the LTTE took control
of the Madhu Catholic Church and asked the priests to remove the famous
statue, known as ‘Our Lady of Madhu', from the shrine, leading to the
vacation of the church for the first time in 400 years – on April 3,
2008. However, the Tigers left the Church Premises on April 24, after
realising that they had been surrounded by the SFs. The Church was finally
handed over to the Mannar Bishop on April 26. The capture of the Church
failed to yield desired result – as a base to launch attacks on troops
as well as to defame the Government if it attacked and damaged the Church
in its bid to throw out the militants – since the LTTE had to evacuate
it. But, with the failed air raid, these remained symbolic of the sheer
desperation that is creeping into the rebel leadership because of the
SFs continuous advances into the LTTE-controlled areas of North, the
loss of public support in the East and the global onslaught targeting
the organisation’s fund raising and arms procurement agenda and infrastructure
across the globe. -Full

Heavy
fighting claims 77 lives in Sri Lanka: military
COLOMBO (AFP) - At least 74 Tamil Tiger rebels and three Sri Lankan
soldiers have been killed in the latest battles in the island's north,
according to the defence ministry on Thursday. It said the three days
of fighting that ended on Thursday occurred in the Vavuniya, Mannar
and Weli Oya areas, from where government forces are trying to push
into the guerrillas' northern territory. Troops on Thursday advanced
into rebel-controlled areas in the Mannar district killing 10 guerillas,
the statement said, adding that one soldier was killed and another injured
in the clashes. Elsewhere, the military accused the rebels of gunning
down a father of two in Vavuniya on Thursday. There was no immediate
comment from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The latest casualties
raise to 3,471 the number of rebels the defence ministry says have been
killed since the start of the year. It has admitted losing 261 soldiers
in the same period. -Full

Sri
Lanka court rejects postponement of eastern poll
COLOMBO, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Appeal Court on Thursday rejected
a plea by a Tamil political party to issue an interim order postponing
Saturday's election for the Eastern Provincial Council. Court officials
said the request made by the People's Liberation of Tamil Eelam had
been refused. The election to be held on Saturday would appoint 35 members
to the newly created eastern provincial council after the province was
de-merged from the Northern Province in 2006. Meanwhile, independent
election monitoring groups have reported very low voter enthusiasm in
the run-up to the election. Batticaloa, Ampara and Trincomalee are three
districts in the multi-ethnic Eastern Province where all three communities
Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim enjoy almost equal presence. The government
treats Saturday's election as a test of its popularity after it regained
the Eastern Province from the Tamil Tigers' control in July last year.

Sri
Lanka braces for crucial eastern provincial poll
(IANS) The government has set the stage for a crucial provincial election
in eastern Sri Lanka Saturday, a year after wresting control of the
area from Tamil Tiger guerrillas. The election is the first poll to
be held in 20 years for the eastern provincial council. Voters will
choose from hundreds of candidates from 18 political parties to fill
35 seats. Nearly one million eligible voters from three districts -
Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara - will be under heavy security as
they head to polling stations manned by 15,000 election officers Saturday.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, whose ruling United People's Freedom Alliance
(UPFA) is one of the main contenders, believes that the poll is an acid
test for voters to determine whether the liberation of the province
has benefited the people living there. 'The voters have to decide whether
to vote for the UPFA and continue with the development or vote for the
opposition and help the LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran to regain
control,' Rajapaksa said, referring to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil
Eelam leader who have waged a violent secessionist campaign since the
1970s. -Full

Sri
Lanka military says it captured small territory in battle that killed
10 rebels
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan soldiers seized a small patch of territory
from Tamil Tiger rebels Thursday after a fierce battle that killed 10
insurgents and a soldier, the military said. Troops took control of
a 2-square-kilometer (1.2-square-mile) area in northern Mannar district,
the military said in a statement. The fighting came a day after the
military said it killed 17 rebels in scattered fighting in Mannar and
nearby Vavuniya district. Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan could
not be immediately reached for comment. It was not possible to independently
verify the military's claims because the media are banned from the northern
jungles where much of the fighting takes place. Both sides commonly
exaggerate their enemy's casualties while underplaying their own. Sri
Lanka's military has been for the past several months battling for territory
around the rebels' de facto administration in the north. Military authorities
have vowed to crush the rebels by the year end. However, the rebels
have stalled some major military advances successfully. -Full

men charged in the UK with plotting to obtain computers, electronics
for Tamil Tigers
LONDON: Four men were charged Thursday with plotting to obtain electronic
equipment for the banned Tamil Tiger rebel group, British police said.
The men planned to get shockproof laptop computers, GPS components,
and high-power magnets, Scotland Yard said, adding that the men knew
or should have known the equipment would be used "for the purposes of
terrorism." The men were arrested as part of an investigation into alleged
overseas funding and support for the Tamil Tigers, a Sri Lanka-based
insurgent group considered a terrorist organization by Britain, the
European Union and the United States. The Tigers' bloody campaign to
carve an ethnic Tamil homeland out of mostly Sinhalese Sri Lanka has
claimed tens of thousands of lives, but they receive considerable support
from expatriated Tamils, including many living in Britain, Sri Lanka's
former colonial master. Police identified those charged Thursday as

Sri
Lanka rescinds move to bar foreign media from covering eastern elections
May 8, 2008 7:30 AM VALAICHCHENAI, Sri Lanka (AP) - The Sri Lankan government
said Thursday it was barring foreign journalists from covering weekend
elections in the Eastern Province, but backed off hours later following
a wave of protests by journalists and rights groups. The election pits
a coalition of the ruling party and former rebels against opposition
parties in a region the government said it had freed from the control
of Tamil Tiger rebels last year. Opposition officials and rights groups
say the former rebels are terrorizing voters and opponents and accuse
the ruling party of using state resources to ensure its victory Saturday.
On Thursday, an Associated Press reporter and a photographer were stopped
at a checkpoint in the eastern town of Valaichchenai and ordered to
leave the province and head straight back to the capital, Colombo. Their
license plate was then distributed to checkpoints in the area to ensure
they complied. Maj. Gen. Palitha Fernando, a senior official in the
Defense Ministry, said any foreigner not registered as an election observer
was barred from the volatile province during the polls. Fernando said
the barring of journalists and other foreigners was for their own protection.

Sri
Lanka hopeful of Indian help to overcome rice crisis
Irish Sun Thursday 8th May, 2008 (IANS) Sri Lanka has expressed hope
that neighbour India would relax its decision not to export non-basmati
rice and thus rescue the island nation from a looming rice crisis. 'If
there is severe rice shortage in Sri Lanka, India would definitely offer
its assistance. India has 2.5 million tonnes of rice in their stores
now and helping Sri Lanka in this regard will not be a problem for them
at all,' R.A.D Ratnayake, secretary to the ministry of commerce and
consumer affairs, said Thursday. Sri Lanka is desperately seeking outside
assistance to rescue itself from a possible rice crisis with efforts
to import at least 100,000 tonnes of rice from Myanmar being badly hit
due to Cyclone Nargis. Ratnayake told IANS that three ships were loaded
with 17,000 tonnes of rice but were unable to sail to Sri Lanka with
the particular port being closed after the national disaster. 'Due to
the cyclone, about 23 small ships sank in the port area, blocking the
pathway from the harbour to the sea. We are in touch with authorities
in Myanmar in this regard,' Ratnayake said. Although India has decided
not to export non-basmati rice, Ratnayake said Sri Lankan authorities
were holding 'very fruitful discussions with India on rice export'.

Do
Some South Indian Politicians Really Believe That Supporting The
LTTE Is Their Ticket To An Election Win?
April 29th 2008
It seems somewhat
curious that Sri Lanka's superpower neighbour and friend to the
South, India has its rival politicians jockeying for power dependent
on what goes on in Sri Lanka at administrative level towards scoring
big in the next general election or thats what it appears to be
when one reads all the related bulletins on the issue lately!
Apparently "The Indian Congress Party does not want to antagonize
regional political parties because it would result in a tactical
blow in next year's election to be held for control of the Lok
Sabha "says a viable news report and that Congress does not want
the present Opposition Bharathiya Janatha Party (BJP) to win that
election with the help of regional political parties, especially
with the support of DMK, MDMK, PMK or VCK as suggested in the
same report so why the heated scramble for the Lok Sabha so dependent
on what goes on in Sri Lanka, a Sovereign Nation far removed from
Indian politics? Various Tamil Nadu leaders, including Tamil Nadu
chief minister and DMK leader M. Karunanidhi, PMK leader R. Ramadoss,
VCK leader Thirumavalavan, MK leader K. Veeramani, MDMK leader
Vaiko, and DMDK leader Vijayakanth who have been quoted as having
appealed to the Indian Government to intervene directly to end
the 'Tamil Question' in Sri Lanka seem to provide the answer.
While demanding that India should intervene directly to end Lanka
'national crisis' which this impervious lot (also somewhat dense
towards realities )seem to identify as the 'Tamil Question', is
this also a call for a re-enactment of the (IPKF) Indian Peace
Keeping Force scenario whose tale of woe was a huge embarassment
to India or instead what on earth are they babbling about in what
appears to be uncontrolled paranoia over an issue totally beyond
their control albeit indicative of chagrin at India's supportive
stance of the Sri Lankan Government's determination to wipe out
the LTTE, the main issue here and indeed the National Crisis which
also affects Tamils as well as the majority Sinhalese and other
communities afflicted by the plague of LTTE terrorism. The crux
of the matter and the hoo haa of it all seems to be the ongoing
rumblings within the Southern Indian State of Tamil Nadu and the
sympathies of some of its Tamil residents led by a band of the
aforementioned blinkered LTTE supportive politicians towards what
they interpret as the plight of the Sri Lankan Tamils whereas
the correct interpretation should be one which identifies Sri
Lanka's ongoing war against internationally condemned Tamil Tiger
Terrorists whom they seem to be reluctant to recognize as far
removed from the peace loving Tamils of Sri Lanka whose main plight
is being at the peril of the Tamil Tigers! If what the recent
reports from India convey as news suggesting that "Recent events
in India show that the Indian Central Government is leaning toward
directly intervening in Sri Lanka to mediate an end to the 'Tamil
national question' between LTTE and GoSL" it had better be one
where India contributes directly to Sri Lanka's concerted effort
to eliminate the LTTE terrorists like any good anti terrorist
Nation should, which will not only be in India's best interests
but also that of the entire Region of South Asia and perhaps even
that of the world in a wider perspective whose plaudits they are
bound to hear in appreciation. -Full

JVP
split
"The
recent attacks on dissidents and a PNM activist may make one wonder
if the JVP goon squads have begun their warm-up exercises. Sporadic
attacks being carried out by JVP goons are a portent of things
to come. They are, as a popular saying goes, only a group of whip
crackers, and perehera (procession) is on its way! "-The

"Siripala
the cinnamon peeler"
By Mario Perera -published by
Godage international publishers
In his first novel, ‘Siripala the Cinnamon
Peeler’, Mario reveals himself still further as a wonderful story
teller. Inspired by his knowledge and love of his country, as
well as by his fears for its future, the story is a vibrant mix
of dream and reality. The poetic and sensual fantasies of a young
peasant for the daughter of a rich landowner are interwoven with
the story of a rebellious youth of revolutionary ideas, and with
the enlightened and appeasing influence of a Buddhist monk. In
the midst of this maelstrom, a natural disaster of hitherto unknown
proportions lurks forebodingly on the horizon, like the sound
of distant drum. -Susan SINGH La Jourdannie France

Book By Dr. Gavin Karunaratne,
Those who are interested in Free and Fair Elections should read
this.
The University Press of America-Available
from AMAZON.COM -ISBN No.1419682421
$13.99
This book discusses in depth the
issues encountered during the 2004 US presidential election focusing
primarily on the failure of the electronic process. Coverage is
provided to the scandal of the election voting machines that fraudulently
added votes to George W Bush. The lack of a paper trail in key
states meant that the decision of the voting machines had to be
accepted as the final. The discussion concludes with the factors
that can assure fair presidential elections in the future.
1.Documents the very high incidents of voting machinery malfunction
in favour of George W Bush
2.How the engineers and technicians designed the software in the
voting machines to favour the Republicans
3. No paper trail meant that the voting machine totals were final
4.Proves that " it is not who votes that counts but who counts
that votes
5.Documents that negligence in the certification of voting machines
enable election to be stolen
6. Details the security measures to be adopted to ensure that
no future election is stolen ever again
Book By Dr. Gavin Karunaratne, a former Elections Administrator
currently an International Consultant, author of "The administrative
bungling that hijacked the 2000 US Presidential election"
