The JVP Merits Its Rightful Place As Coalition Partner With The UPFA Despite A Single Council Win!So much for the soothsayers who predicted a comprehensive upliftment of the JVP and JHU statuses relative to the outcome of the recently concluded Local Government Elections where PresidentThe Hon. Mahinda Rajapakse alone romped home to a remarkable victory silencing some forecasts and putting into perspective perhaps the state of affairs within the majority Sinhala Nation and the direction its voting public has been inspired to indicate as the one most likely to succeed ! Somewhat distanced as some believe from one of radicalism or confrontation with the Nation's enemies and a more convincing mandate of affirmation to their pragmatic leader and an acceptance of his administrative capabilities thus far, never in doubt. Despite JVP assertions that they have done better than previously on a percentage basis as the final tally was counted The LG election results have not realistically provided a welcome nudge for the JVP by Sri Lanka's voters where the JVP have surely been somewhat startled into accepting an unexpected mindset of most Lankan voters where in the overall scheme of things the JVP seems to have overestimated strengths and dwelt too much on anticipated charisma and overblown self confidences perhaps somewhat erroneously as they must surely be compelled to contend with, now spilling into a starker reality. A projected expectation of at least 50 councils as was vocally amplified during election campaigns has resulted in a single council victory for the JVP, the one they held previously where the vote base has indeed been retained with little or no expansion as reported in the media but once again relative to voter turnout by comparison. There is every reason to believe the JVP has projected this outcome by virtue of its confrontational stand of too many ultimatums to the Government which may have sounded much too radical for the average voter to comprehend as anything other than going against Presidential policy or compromising the already established strengths of the present administration towards the much sought after stability which seems to be taking shape to the tune oh many international accollades and hence detrimental to the future of the Nation. It now remains a prioritised' Fait Acompli' and a challenge for the JVP who now have to work towards correcting any inconsistencies of policy as the future of the Nation's well being rests on how they re-align themselves with the Rajapakse Administration and overcome a few political hiccups ere the crafty UNP appearing to have devises in the same direction themselves cash in on a situation which would suit the connivances of the LTTE amply as they watch the proceedings from a distance! Projecting almost remarkably upto expectations given past trends the two major parties the UPFA and the UNP have secured their council seats with the latter obviously in the lesser proportion of the ratio needed for victory where the JVP have fared no better than an also ran which managed to hold onto what they already had but with no lustre or fanfare to herald a new dawn towards their own aspirations which proves comprehensively that they have no choice but to be supportive of the Rajapakse Administration in their best interests and that of the Nation where their Vis A Vis the JHU have faced near total annihilation and are said to be seriously considering throwng in the towel towards further political aspirations! While the writing may not necessarily be on the wall as a pointer that the JVP is a spent force , it seems to indicate their fallibilities through over enthusiasm. Despite the surge of popularity during their previous successes at the polls the overall momentum gathered over the past few decades may have weakened to a degree in a Nation sick and tired of confrontational politics which also emphasizes the unities needed towards a different type of confrontation with the plague of terrorism which continues to sweep parts of the Nation and an outlawed terrorist group continues their pretended de facto manouvres which are all but a consternation and embarrassment to the Sovereign Nation of Sri Lanka. Suddenly there are subdued whispers of a possible alliance between the UPFA and UNP where the JVP appears to be less important to the pragmatism of the Rajapakse Administration by way of their more radical approaches towards resolution of Sri Lanka's woes but a point to ponder upon as their being circumvented for the favours of the UNP could be a cardinal error for the UPFA. Despite the convictions by some that such an alliance would project an appropriate resolution for Sri Lanka particularly to the ethnic problem it would also be the easiest way towards providing unnecessary platforms for the LTTE and their self centred means towards their own survival which would totally compromise the needs of the Tamil Community which is not really interested in the autocratic norms of the Wanni Tigers and something which the UNP have always appeared to be ready to provide Carte Blance for! Hence the symbiotic dependency which has always existed between the UPFA and JVP of recent history must never be compromised by the UPFA for the favours of the UNP which if resorted to by the Rajapakse Administration could spell curtains for the freedoms of the more moderate Tamils of Sri Lanka as well as projecting the criminalities of the LTTE to a level of unacceptable apathy where no justice would have been rightly served should the LTTE be permitted to get away scot free without atoning for decades of crimes against humanity and a Sovereign Nation and ultimately imperiling Sri Lanka and all her citizens whether they be Sinhalese,Tamil, Muslim or any other minority! The question of devolution of power as the ultimate preamble towards Sri Lanka's posterity is now a matter concerning the moderate rather than radical Tamils of the Nation where on one hand the UNP might be prepared to hand over the reins of devolution on a platter to a bunch of fully armed terrorists led by Sri Lanka's Public Enemy No.1 and with a bit of coercion from forces without! calling themselves peace emmissaries! and on the other hand a JVP-JHU tour de force would more than likely be a huge contention for the Wanni Tigers who might be forced to eventually make way for sane and freedom loving Tamils represented by a more moderate leadership equally adept when it comes to force or moderation but as yet to surface as the trump card albeit seemingly on a collision course with the pretenders to the Tamil representation, the LTTE ever in trepidation of this nemesis of theirs. Whatever the outcome of the Local Government Elections it is upto the UPFA and the JVP to mend fences and pursue a common commitment to the Nation rather than forge any inadvertent means to betray it to its enemies! which would surely be the case if the UNP were half as much as tolerated as a coalition towards resolving Sri Lanka's woes as an equal partner as they are too much in disarray internally and prevaricate overly on issues relative to Sri Lanka's well being regarding which the JVP despite a single Local Council victory have been rock solid in their affirmations, aspirations and dedications to Sri Lanka! Outphasing them in favour of the transparencies of the UNP towards a liason would be a travesty of justice and an insult to the patriotism shown by the commendable and resolute JVP whose unfettered dedications to their motherland needs to be recognized and not discarded for the motley crew with a greater number of council wins in case the thought is ever entertained by the powers that be!! |
