The President's Aspirations Could Only Point Towards His Continued Success As A True Leader

October 8th 2007

All kudos to the President who has proclaimed recently that his Administration will uplift the economy by making it self- reliant which is not only a credible affirmation that the Nation would readily accept given the nature of things in Sri Lanka today indicative of many recoveries in importants areas of the Nation's economy, security and general well being and but also attests to the great capability of the President as an acceptable National leader who does not waste his time on unimportant frivolities of many previous regimes, dabble in dangerous games with the enemy or mince his words about Governmental Policy!

As the Nation as well as the world is surely aware of Sri Lanka has been faced with near insurmountable odds toward restoring a normal order within the Nation not only due to the terrorist problem but also the many stumbling blocks by the opposition towards their own impure agendas based mainly on their urgencies relative to their re-annexation of power a capacity which they appear to have lost indefinitely and are distancing themselves further and further from the reality of ever returning to political power based on their modus operandi which spares no scruples towards how they accomplish it and the desperation is beginning to show !

The President's assertion that " the power-hungry political leaders who are craving to grab power at any cost, should refrain from trotting the globe and betraying their Motherland by propagating baseless allegations to tarnish the good image of the Government and deprive the country of aid and assistance from the International Community " is well and truly said with a greater emphasis towards the latter sentiment as all of it points to the salient truth and a cause for shame for the perpetrators who consider themselves sons and daughters of Sri Lanka some of whom hold high public office!

President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his emphasis of the theme that the Government’s endeavour is to develop and uplift the country’s economy and make it self-reliant, is a noble and brave one which needs to be given all the necessary support towards accomplishment. The many resources the Island Nation has always been renowned for, predominantly agricultural have been assured a boost economically which speaks a lot for his concerns for the Nation's populace with greater emphasis towards the needs of the common man, a much needed one towards appeasing the less fortunate of this land of many people struggling to cope with a ravaged economy and many disgruntlements brought on mainly through the huge disparity between the rich and the poor a sad legacy left behind by its previous rulers probably going back to colonial times as well as the greed of bygone dynasties and embellished by the attrocities of terrorism for which a huge chunk of the nation's coffers have been sliced towards dealing with them militarily.

Mercifully perhaps as possible compensation for everything that has gone wrong for Sri Lanka there is at present the more than speculative existence of vast deposits of oil in territorial waters surrounding the Nation which could project the Nation into a greater level of prosperity than ever known before and seems appropriate timing for the astute leadership of the President towards piloting the Nation towards a much deserved bright future.Given all the factors governing the possible exploitation of vast natural resources provided they are locked into place without disruption or selfish motivation things do look fortuitous for Sri Lanka relative to posterity where piloting the ship towards it needs careful and dextrous handling by its pilot at the bridge given the circumstances and a time when the Nation should rally round him as the obvious choice towards the task.

It is a time indeed where the communities of all ethnicities could look forward to co-existing in peace and harmony as the President has euphemised and goes beyond the euphemism if the favourabilities by way of his leadership are recognized by the world and the entire Nation rather than parts thereof where all the support is needed unstintingly without reservation rather than erecting stumbling blocks by some by way of indiscriminate accusations and misinterpretations of how he administers to the needs of the Nation and predominantly related to the urgency with which he has indicated the need to deal with the terrorist issue.

This is something which his team of administrators and the armed forces are in relentless pursuit of as they have come to realise that the only solution towards the Nation's complete recovery is through the elimination of the LTTE in their terrorist identity while restoring the rights of all Tamils who have alienated themselves from being terrorist supportive within the Nation where pro LTTE diaspora need to be considered non entities alongside the terrorists they so vehemently as well as criminally support!

While the Government continues a campaign of information to strengthen the confidences of all Sri Lankans on the realities of the present political situation and trends contrary to those presented by opposition sources towards misleading the world as well as a gullible few within the Nation through unfounded allegations and horrendous sounding concocted lies and innuendo for obvious reasons. The adverse publicity by certain opposition political parties to discredit the Government and tarnish its image has been rampant and rife and shamefully apathetic. The excesses indulged in towards this by Sri Lanka's opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe and a few of his somewhat conspicuously confused allies have been nauseatingly visible some who have even openly campaigned towards cutting off desperately needed foreign aid towards disrupting the smooth functioning of Government!

As an interesting side issue, the party which considers itself the kingmaker to the present Administration, namely the JVP which seems circumspect about how it should support the Government while cleverly avoiding collusion with the main opposition UNP. Of particular curiosity is the manner in which the JVP (People's Liberation Party ) sits smugly content in waving mild warnings and exhortations to the President as to how he should conduct his parliamentary direction in an attempt to fortify their own securities perhaps where a better alternative would be throwing in their lot unconditionally with the President and the GOSL towards an unshakable Administration.

It must also be noted that the President has invited the UNP to join ranks in a similar perspective with his administration which may not seem an ideal decision given the undercutting traits and tendencies of some of that particular group who could easily be a wrench in the works of progress the present administration has set in place albeit a sad fact of life despite its stark reality! It may be an option the Administration might later live to regret if taken unconditionally.

It also makes the more discerning wonder whether the JVP are being opportunistic in a climate where they seem to be identified as the makers or breakers of Parliamentary Governance but could be rudely disillusioned if they persist in their attitude and consequently create platforms of leeway to the UNP ever waiting hopefully for a return to the political scenario as the rulers of the Nation where the more realistic speculation could easily be a fall from grace for the UNP if this already has not transpired and identified as betrayers while also considering the numbers lacking towards this fait accompli through the many desertions the UNP have been faced with in recent times !

Consequently and synonymous with his particula brand of pragmatism, the President's assertions "that all attempts to topple the Government by any party would be proved absolutely futile and in vain, so long as the power and the trust of the people remains with the Government" is very realistic. His continued pledges that " We will not breach the trust placed in me and my Government by the people. While fighting the LTTE to eradicate terrorism in search of a honourable peace, to establish a society where all communities could live sans fear and suspicion, in any part of the country, whether it may be the North, South, East or West, we will also develop and uplift the country’s economy and make it self-reliant,” seems to have already manifested itself to a greater degree.

Something which appears to fit perfectly as the mantle surrounding the political climate within the land which seemingly rests on the perceptions of the people who have in all probabilities come to realise that there is indeed a real change within Sri Lanka in the post Presidential era against all odds and despite the continued attempts of all his enemies to discredit him. In this respect the President's aspirations could only point towards his continued success as a true leader while assuring Sri Lanka a greater deal of stability and security than ever before!
