A Turning Point In the History Of Sri Lanka Should Be Heralded After April 2nd As A New Beginning.

It has to be looked forward with great anticipation that post April 2nd Sri Lanka will be a new beginning for all Sri Lankans if the key issues which have dampened the Nation's progress into the 21st century such as being subjugated by an illegal terrorist entity who have been permitted to run amok in the North and North East of Sri Lanka, the corruptness of certain sectors of the incumbent administration. (now surfacing in detail) The apalling lowering of living standards of a majority of the population due to the dank neglect of the present administration whose priorities were more indicative of pandering to terrorists, revelling in the affluence of misapropriated State Funds, property and disentitled creature comforts unavailable to its suffering impoverished population and displaying an attitude of nonchalance towards the nation's woes rather than fulfilling its needs are all areas which will be dealt with as expected by the powerful new alliance which is expected to surface, of the Peoples Alliance, the Janatha Vimukthui Peramuna and the rest of the affiliate opposition parties supportive of the Alliance spearheaded by the President , who have come together and pledged their support towards rebuilding Sri Lanka after decades of suffering which was not realistically accomplished by the United National Front Regime of Ranil Wickremasinghe which nevertheless deserves due credit for the end to the ethnic conflict which was not pursued to its fullest effectiveness in making too much leeway to the LTTE terrorists in the aftermath which has brought about the turn of events which have led to the dissolution of Parliament by the President and the call for new elections!

The likelihood of a majority political swing towards President Chandrika Kumaratunga's New Alliance seems a distinct possibility judging by the mood of the Nation's impoverished masses who waited in vain towards a restitution to their real needs after casting their votes marginally in favour of the UNF in the previous election which sadly never came as the UNF bandwagon continued its surge towards a decadence never before seen where the rich as usual became richer (mostly the new rich) and the poor poorer, crime increased and a lawlesness based upon the power and might of the incumbent administration ( shamelessly illustrated in the Thilanga Sumathipala affair as one outstanding example while others are now emerging ! ) hoodwinking the International Community into believing they were on the right track whereas Sri Lanka in fact may have been headed towards impending disaster and the loss of her Sovereign Democratic Unitarity whilst the LTTE terrorists danced in glee in anticipation of great possibilities towards their separatist dreams!

Objectively viewed however, this divided country of 20 million with its past several decades of pain and suffering through a wretchedly fought civil war between the Majority Sinhalese Armed Forces and the insurgent terrorists of the LTTE falsely carrying banners for the entire minority Tamil Community, also fueled by misguided overseas LTTE support, unscrupulous Western arms merchants and the unattainable dream of a separate homeland had all but decimated the country until a cease-fire brought the carnage of war to temporary rest which has mercifully assumed permanent and lasting proportions albeit temporary in perspective by the experts but a negative affirmation.A ceasefire which was already on the drawings boards of President Kumaratunga yet eventually implemented by force of circumstances in being at the right place at the right time by Ranil Wickremasinghe was nonetheless academic as to who initiated it and why the LTTE accepted it having previously turned down a similar proposition by the previous administration.

This is a crucial time for Sri Lanka and her caretaker administration as preparations get underway for the elections of April 2nd and there are apprehensions about the irregularities which seem to almost customarily follow the path leading to Election Day in Sri Lanka marred by violence at times and the political mudslinging and inflammatory dialogue which it is hoped this time around would be contained to a tolerable level in a realistic sense by the authorities and that Sri Lanka would emerge as a well governed Nation headed towards success and prosperity in the future with a politically correct leadership which seems to be in the making.

There have been many misgivings in speculating Sri Lanka as being in a constitutional and political crisis where the protestations of the incumbent politicians projected a false image to the world that this is indeed the case following the annexation of key Ministries by the President and her subsequent dissolution of Parliament. The truth however on deeper examination and evaluation, points to the contrary as the sense of responsibilities and patriotism expected of the incumbent Administration was rather easily portayed as having been relinquished to appease the oppressors of the Nation, the LTTE terrorists whose ISGA as demanded was on the verge of being acceded to as a Self Governing Authority also known as a stepping stone towards secession and one of impurity which totally compromised the rights and very existence of the Sinhala Nation!

Certainly, the recent actions of President Chandrika Kumaratunga give considerable credence to their justification as she has recently dissolved Parliament to pave the way for snap elections (four years ahead of schedule) while implementing the immediate streamlining of the cabinet, ridding it of certain appointees perhaps of patronage. There are also allegations against some who appear to illegaly dipped into the coffers and maintained high living at the expense of the taxpayer, some of whom now face charges of bribery and corruption in an alarming bombshell of a revelation where many prominent names of leading politicians appear to be in danger of being coined with infamy and incarceration with corroborating evidence in support of the charges, stark in reality and disdainful!

It now remains the responsibility of the International Community and its Foreign Aid Agencies to be completely supportive of the path chosen by the President and correctly interpret her motivations which must not be wrongly construed which will deny the rights of Sri Lanka towards greater progress through the false propaganda which appears to have suddenly surfaced in favour of the deposed Wickremasinghe Administration which had its chances to assert the needs of Sri Lanka and apparently failed.

Freedom accomplished at the cost of over 60,000 lives and the immeasurable destruction of public and private property while it cannot be compromised by the threats of lurking terrorists on the verge of probable demise yet convincing in their pretences towards a new found righteousness cannot be evaluated as real freedom if its essence is sullied by its insecurity projected through an unresolved terrorists issue also known as an ethnic crisis.

The future of Sri Lanka to a greater extent must be controlled by good governance and the integrity of an administration dedicated to righting the wrongdoings of unscrupulous individuals who have discarded all moral obligations towards preserving Sri Lanka's Sovereignity, Territorial Integrity, the inherant rights of all her citizens and the maintenance of a stable economy.

It is expected that the New Alliance with its memorandum of understanding will surely get the job done this time around after April 2nd 2004 depending on the will of the people.
