It may not altogether be sweet music in the ears of all freedom loving democratically inclined Sri Lankans and the international community that the LTTE are on target for elimination despite all the goings on, if over 120,000 helpless civilians in the Northeast of Sri Lanka are in the direct line of fire between the Armed Forces and the LTTE terrorists! While the LTTE probably view this circumstance towards their advantage in the face of the security forces push towards their elimination the Government has to do everything within its means to ensure the safety of these poor victims of terrorism whose safeties cannot be compromised towards the elimination of the tigers as what may transpire then would be tantamount to a lost cause.

On one hand the Armed Forces face a disadvantage in having to deal with these civilians who are virtual refugees and on the other they are a convenient shield for the LTTE to dodge armed forces firepower and it will take vary cautious manouvering to avoid unwanted civilian casualties where a catch 22 situation has already arisen where despite some 40000 civilians who have managed to escape the troubled Northeast, there still remain a vast number of people who have not clearly made it to safety and a top priority for the Forces to consider which almost instantly compounds the task of LTTE elimination and reverts to the greater need to protect the civilians

In this respect pursuance of a political solution alongside the military campaign becomes at least in theory mandatory with the former needing great consideration as the authorities in quest of the long sought after peace have many rivers to cross in order to end decades of internal armed insurrection where the political soution at present has become a farce with the non response of the LTTE who appear to be quite content to continue confrontational manouvres to convince the international community albeit falsely that they are the victims of Sri Lankan hierarchy aggression, furthest from the truth.So what options to the Armed Forces have but very few and ones which appear to be in need of handling with kid gloves!

At the present time the Sri Lankan security forces are on a clear cut path to upstage the LTTE according to intelligence reports despite the time frame indicated to win the military campaign. where the adage " fighting to overcome terrorism "becomes the priority and all other impediments needing to be overcome diligently."This must translate towards a strategic means to ensure the safety of the civilians trapped in these areas where the push towards LTTE elimination cannot be relaxed or reduced in intensity by any substantial means but it also cannot jeapordize the lives of the innocent.

The presence of the vast number of civilians in all probabilities is the reason for army intelligence to conclude perhaps prematurely that the current military campaign against the Tiger rebels could take a longer time than previously anticipated even as warplanes continued to bomb rebel positions in their continued assault on the LTTE.

Time may be of the essence towards the protection of the populace of these areas synonymous with the move to eliminate the LTTE who oftentimes tend to use them mendaciously as human shields but it has become a priority for the two actions to be co-ordinated with an interdependency which will not risk unnecessary bloodshed as the very term"bloodshed' refered to by LTTE mouthpiece Thamilselvam from his jungle lair seems to signify the mindset of the LTTE as the posturing towards how best to accomplish the task of ridding Sri Lanka of the tigers becomes a dilemma not necessarily related to the military capabilities of the Armed Forces but the cunning needed to outwith the LTTE not only militarily but psychologically to isolate the civilians from their relentlessly vicious clutches and their gunsights which will be the ultimate fait accompli for the Security Forces.

An alternately clever move would however be to cut the rhetotic about tolerating the LTTE as the overall representatives of the Tamil community and offer a contract to Karuna and his aides for the head of Velupillai Prabhakaran which will cripple the functionability of the rest of his murky band of terrorists and further limit the manouverings of Thamilselvam and the rest of the LTTE cronies who do not at all times depend on human shields and need to be caught napping with the element of surprise which for the purpose of national security and posterity needs to be clandestine!The manner in which the LTTE run in the face of severe adversity is an indication that a leaderless LTTE is a worthless one despite the fact that their leadership is also worthless but the gambit undoubtedly a very fruitful one for Sri Lanka!!
