Why
Curiosities Arise Over The SLMM 's Norwegian Involvement In Sri Lanka's
Peace And Their Continued Presence !
It seems as though the once LTTE friendly SLMM have finally had the biscuit with the LTTE and while it has not been absolutely established as an out and out condemnation there is reason to believe that at least one of the Norwegian Peace Monitors appears to have shifted her pro LTTE stance by way of dialogue in the wake of the recent senseless attacks by the LTTE on the Navy where it has also been reported that one of the Navy vessels which were attacked also had a lady Norwegian representative aboard , the lady in question! adding a strange twist to the incident. Perhaps this is the incentive for the change of heart and the end of a long LTTE supportive stint by the SLMM where they seem to have finally realised its futility on a quid pro quo basis and bad news for the LTTE of worse to follow if all this is true! and by way of an obligation to the Sri Lankan Government perhaps long overdue albeit a mere speculative theory when viewed objectively considering the known irregularities of Norways pro LTTE stance upto the time of this incident leading to the "perhaps not !" alternative trend of thought! This attack by the LTTEs sea tiger terrorists on an unarmed Navy personnel carrier Pearl Cruiser II with SLMMs Helen Olafsdottir on board has marked a defining moment in the LTTEs chances of continuing in their present terrorist guise, as a first hand account has been recorded by Mm. Olafsdottir indicating her willingness to admit that the LTTE are a bunch of mendacious terrorists with no holds barred perhaps suggesting that the world needs to be made aware of it in no uncertain terms. This however has not officially had the backing of the full strength of the Norwegian contingent involved in the peace process As expected Mm. Olafsdottir has come under fire from the LTTE mouthpiece Thamilselvam and his cronies indicating the LTTE's indignations at condemnations from the one source they beleived for a long time as partisanly supportive to their cause and suddenly their bubble appears to have been burst and their true colours exposed for which the Nation of Sri Lanka needs to be thankful as it could prove to be the first step towards the LTTE' s undoing. This comes at a time when the US Administration has called for their proscription by the European Union and augurs well for Sri Lanka's cause towards disbanding them and disrupting their objectives and agenda perhaps a premise towards ursurping their very existences within a framework of unjustifiable tolerance within Sovereign Sri Lanka which the LTTE have thus far enjoyed. That it has taken this long for the SLMM towards attrition by way of recognition of a concerted run of continued attrocities by the LTTE if this it what it is tantamount to is somewhat apathetic but as the saying goes it is better late than never as the International Community has finally been made aware of the true nature of this terrorist group with perhaps greater condemnations to follow! It is all the more plausible and tangible that contrary to the propaganda based rhetoric of the LTTE and their supportives, the liability of their guilt has now been attested to in greater part by the SLMM even speculatively. This attack on the Sri Lanka Naval convoy Thursday 11 May 2006 brought forth a straightforwardness and clarity of a historic precedenece never before observed as an emphatic accusation by at least one of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) which appears to have confounded the LTTE and their future ambitions. It is therefore of great importance to affirm a recent observation in a features column on the current situation made to LankaWeb News that quote unquote "the use of terms such as 'gross violation of the ceasefire' with the aim of provoking the Sri Lankan Navy and embarking on an offensive operation against the Navy have never been in the vocabulary of the SLMM when just as serious offensive action was carried out before this. One wonders if the Tamil terrorists have just turned a corner and started on their Road to Perdition" or to the contrary one wonders if Norway has resorted to an ingenuity of tactics never seen before as an add on by this editorial. It is fast becoming obvious that political spokesman for the Tamil Tiger terrorists S.P.Thamilselvams analytical conclusions are delusions as he claims sovereign rights for access to the adjacent sea and airspace of what he terms somewhat baselessly and incongruously as "our homelands" in response to the sharp ruling they received from the SLMM following the sea attack on the Sri Lanka Naval Force personnel carrier. While there have been many calls from many political circles within Sri Lanka that the Norwegians and their role in the SLMM is a worthless and questionable one by way of bi -partisanship and patronage towards the LTTE it also appears that this sudden change of attitude by the Norwegians could point towards a Machiavellian type plot intended to mislead the Government of Sri Lanka. It has to be recognized that the importance of Norway's continued involvement in the Peace Process could be of greater benefit to the Tigers rather than the GOSL and the scenario enacted a mere ploy towards further smokescreens intended to retain Norway's involvement where their presence alone appears to be depicted as the reason for the safety of the Naval Transport vessel and possible harm from the LTTE. If this is the intended ploy it certainly seems one which could horribly backfire for the LTTE as world powers unite towards further asserting the condemnations of their terrorist guise and Norway's previous peace efforts in other parts of the globe remembered with the abject derision. This is the very first instance that the LTTE and Norway have been on opposite sides in the Sri Lankan insurgent conflict leaving much food for thought for the more descerning as well as the skeptics! In reality however the real deterrent which rallied the Naval vessel to safety has been the intensity of the response of the Sri Lankan Navy with ground and air support. It also seems very appropriate that the Sri Lankan armed forces have initiated a measure of quick responses in taking out LTTE targets in the Wanni jungles and the oceanfronts of Trincomalee, Mulattivu and Jaffna regions knocking out at least in part some of their professed aerial and ground capabilities while the Government continues to remain hopeful that peace negotiations could still be resumed despite the perplexing rationale that while confrontations might be a measure towards detering the enemy it could also initiate a full scale conflict and a calculated risk?. The President has summed up Sri Lanka's overall response to the equation of terror against the rights of Sri Lankans that he will no longer depend on further outside help towards resolving Sri Lanka's terrorist issues nor will he be intimidated or subjugated by the terrorists towards relinquishing Sri Lanka's Sovereignity and Territorial integrity towards misconceived myths of a professed Tamil Homeland which truly portrays what his priorities and strengths are and must surely sound ominous to any aspiring Eelamist or hunters of natural resources towards their own advantage taking into consideration Norways less publicised role in Sri Lanka's quest for offshore oil of which there now appears to be immense reserves hitherto unexplored! At this very moment there are rumblings about a role Norway might have played in supplementing the LTTE cause morre tangibly than was previously thought possible and certainly a pointer towards ditching them from any further involvement in Sri Lanka's quest for peace and redemption from terrorism while seeking whatever other options are available and preferably contained within the sovereign statutes of Sri Lanka! |
