Does Sri Lanka need a US Resolution for it to continue to do what it is doing to reconcile the Communities and rebuild the country after 30 years of Terrorism ?
By Charles.S.Perera
Though the  President of USA Barack Obama’s father was from a developing country, the President is not interested in poor developing countries, preferring to hobnob with the  White Nations of the West, and those prosperous Nations in  Asia.  He visited India perhaps for political reasons and because pandering it  would help US political strategy against China.  Kenya which he visited as the country of his father and where he met his relatives was not so much to his liking. In one of his books he says that his wife Michelle  coming back after  visiting Kenya said she... -Full Story-

Indian PM has to consult Kurshid on attending CHOGM
Asada M Erpini
Media reports dated 30 March mention that Mr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India will discuss with his Minister of External Affairs the issue of his participation at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), to be held in Colombo later in the year. Obviously the learned gentleman is undecided, and he needs the help of others to arrive at a decision.  There are millions of peace-loving Sri Lankans who are ready to help the Indian Prime Minister in the dilemma he is facing, and who can help him get out of the quagmire. Need for a new map of terrain What empowers a Sinhala/Tamil medium graduate left Sri Lanka in frustration to become a professor, a scientist or a research director for example, in USA facing world-wide competition? How was it possible for young men from poor Sri Lanka to win the world cup of cricket by team effort? What reasons were the behind the capacity of village girls and boys in Sri Lanka to end a thirty-year war in less than three years surprising the whole world? It Can Happen Here: The Bank Confiscation Scheme for US and UK Depositors
By Ellen Brown
Confiscating the customer deposits in Cyprus banks, it seems, was not a one-off, desperate idea of a few Eurozone “troika” officials scrambling to salvage their balance sheets. A joint paper by the US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Bank of England dated December 10, 2012, shows that these plans have been long in the making; that they originated with the G20 Financial Stability Board in Basel, Switzerland (discussed earlier here); and that the result will be to deliver clear title to the banks of depositor funds. New Zealand has a similar directive, discussed in my last... -Full Story-

Vaiko demands arrest of Sri Lanka High Commissioner in India for saying, “Sinhalese came from North India”!
Asada M Erpini
The depths, to which the bankrupt political numbskulls in Tamil Nadu can descend to, as reported in the media on 28 March, are mind boggling.  When the average reader was convinced that the politicians, the actors and the actors-turned-politicians in the Dravidian State had given their best performances so far vis a vis Sri Lanka, now comes the story of calls for the arrest of His Excellency Prasad Kariyawasam, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in India.  A man called Vaiko wants His Excellency arrested, and another individual, named Ramadoss, has said that the High Commissioner should be... -Full Story-

OUR MOTHER LAND: SRILANKA - Contributions of Muslim people for the socio-political and economic development of Srilanka:
by Dr Rifai Naleemi. London
Srilanka Muslims have been living in peace and harmoeny in the Island for more than 1000 years.  They have been cooperating and supporting the majority Singhalese communities throughout Srilankan history since pre-independence period.  Since pre-colonial times, Muslim people in Srilanka have been contributing for the unity and integrity of Srilanka: Muslims have greatly contributed to Srilanka in many fields and yet, their contributions are sometimes not rightly recognized, highlighted or made to be known to non-Muslim people in Srilanka. It is a duty and responsibility of Muslim community to record all these... -Full Story-

RE: Big Power Politics flush UN Charter Down the Toilet- H. L. D. Mahindapala
Ranjini Deraniyagala
Mr Mahindapala has outlined a true record of the Western politics. But is all this digging up help Sri Lanka. Here are my take on all these scenarios: 1. Did Sri Lanka succeed in downplaying the past military  roles of USA and EU Alliances.   They are united and whatever done was under Human Rights according to their definitions.     They all stand by that in unisom. Any criticism of them as regards their HUman Rights  actions  though may be right or wrong were not in dispute at the time. The fact is there  were no big powers refuting their actions. ANTAGONISM AMONG MUSLIMS IN SRI LANKA
Dr. Daya Hewapathirane  Vancouver, CANADA
Sufism or the Sufi Muslim Ideology
Traditionally, Sufism or the Sufi Muslim ideology had been the predominant Islamic spiritual tradition observed throughout Southern Asia, including Sri Lanka. Sufism is considered to be the mystical, ascetic branch of Islam which emphasizes personal experience with Allah. Sufis can be members of either the Sunni or Shi’a divisions of Islam who share most of the basic principles of Islam. These two divisions stemmed from ancient political strife among Muslims. Sunni Muslims being in the majority, amount to about 88% of the global Muslim population.  Threats... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 30/03/13)

Ban Wahhabism in Sri Lanka – Save Muslims and Save Sri Lanka
Shenali Waduge
There comes a time when tough actions need to be taken in the interest of the country. Inaction leads to dire consequences - 30 years of LTTE terror is what happened. The similarities between what we went through and what is enfolding now gives sufficient reason for prompt action. Power and money were the curses that delayed then and are likely to be the key obstacles for present inaction. Previous Governments were not resolved enough to take action and the country ended up suffering. That same fate cannot be repeated. The root causes for the current turmoil... -Full Story-

Defeating secularist plot to usurp majority Hindu India and majority Buddhist Sri Lanka
Shenali Waduge
Independence to colonies came at a cost with a legacy that bound nations in debt by spending on solving the problems the colonials implanted. People were divided. Populations were divided. Ethnicities were divided. Tribes were divided. Boundaries were created and endless issues associated with each. Muslims have issues, Christians have issues, but when Hindus in India and Buddhists in Sri Lanka voice their issues it is referred to as communal. To be Hindu and to say one is Hindu is considered taboo just as Buddhists and Sinhalese are finding out too. Political correctness has meant politicians are... -Full Story-

Power Devolution and 13A Will Totally Mess Up Our Foreign Policy Creating Enemies the World Over
Dilrook Kannangara
The recent racism boilover in Tamil Nadu teaches us many things. It is how Sri Lanka will be after meaningful power devolution. TNA, TULF and ACTC led Northern Province will be no different to DMK and AIADMK led Tamil Nadu state of India, if not worse. However, things get far worse than that. What we also saw in the devolution model of India is how states/provinces manipulated the Centre’s foreign policy to the extent of creating an adversary out of a friend and making a mockery of India’s otherwise consistent foreign policy! Norway, with help of the West threatened Omar Al Baashir that unless he agreed to hold a referendum on South Sudan, war crimes charges against him (in relation to the Darfur conflict where it is alleged that up to 400,000 people died) will be vigorously pursued. Tamil Nadu Does Not Execute Indian Federal Government Foreign Policy As India Has Clearly Stated Over The Ongoing Issue Anti Sri Lankan Sentiment

March 30th 2013    It was always a forgone conclusion that despite all the hooing and haaing by the likes of Jayalalitha, Vaiko and Karunanidhi to name some. over Sri Lankan matters relative to Tamils, India would not toe the line with their agitations which are plainly visible as linked to the pro LTTE Global Tamil diaspora. This seems somewhat reprehensible and contentious as today in  Sri Lanka there are many Tamils  who have shed their shackled past links with the LTTE and are returning to a life of normalcy quite happy to accept the programs towards resettlement... -Full Story-

Dr. Tilak S. Fernando
During the late General Sepala Attygala’s tenure  as  the High Commissioner in London,  President Premadasa decided to take some remedial action  to give a face lift to  the  Sri Lanka High Commission building at 13 Hyde Park Gardens, upon realising  the historic value of this vast building where Lord Northcliff had lived with 24 servants in the basement in an era when  the British aristocracy occupied the main house, known as  ‘upstairs’ and the domestic staff  occupied the basement as “ downstairs”. Statement on Closure of Legal Case for Iraq in SpainWe brought the case to Spain because its laws of universal jurisdiction are based on principles enshrined in its constitution. All humanity knows the crimes committed in Iraq by those we accused, but no jurisdiction is bringing them to justice. War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity: The Story of U.S. Exceptionalism in Iraq
By Ajamu Baraka
This month marks the tenth anniversary of the U.S. attack on Iraq, one of the most egregious expressions of naked power and imperial ambition since the Second World War. The attack defied both an outraged world opinion — expressed by global mass demonstrations — and the United Nations charter. It also marked a change from the previous veiled decorum of supposed adherence to international law that defined post-war international relations. The Bush administration, armed with the ultimate expression of the arrogance of U.S. exceptionalism – legislation passed by the U.S. Congress – unleashed a murderous assault... -Full Story-

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa yesterday said that the ongoing crisis in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, over accountability issues here, should discourage those pushing for devolution of power under the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. A hostile provincial administration in the Northern or the Eastern Province in Sri Lanka could be inimical to the post-war national reconciliation process, Defence Secretary Rajapaksa said in an exclusive interview with The Island. Urgent need of the day - an island wide Referendum is needed to test the 13th Amendment
Sri Lanka Support Group, Canberra
The recent Geneva Resolutions against Sri Lanka, instigated by the US and India, have been designed to enforce the 13th amendment fully. The 13th amendment was enacted in 1987 by the then President, JR Jayewardene; at that time he failed to hold a referendum to seek the consensus of the masses - as required by the Constitution. How halal is the Halal Certificate
Shenali Waduge
The world is often shaken by issues that serve to test the reactions of people. The halal certificate appears to be one such issue. Lessons to be taken are many, first and foremost of which is that on either side of any debate there are the mischief makers dousing flames for their profit. The so-called international community, which in effect is a few affluent countries that violated the human rights of and massacred the innocents as long as one can remember, uses the concocted numbers and the doctored images to accuse, convict and pillory Sri Lanka and its valiant armed forces for every imaginable crime – genocide of innocent Tamils, human rights violations, rape of refugee women, using heavy weapons in no-fire zones, etc.  One of the... -Full Story-

The US and its resolution - Tail wagging the dog !
P.A.Samaraweera, Melbourne
After the UNHRC vote, the US State Dept Spokeswoman, Victoria Nuland, had said that Sri Lanka should listen to the international community. But she had not specified who this international community is. We wish to remind Victoria that this same international community put immense pressure on Sri Lanka towards the end of the war for a pause. If the govt had obliged it would have been a disaster. In the past, Sri Lanka had listened to them and had peace talks several times, which went down the drain. We like to ask Victoria whether Israel, North Korea, Iran,... -Full Story-

Of those sick physicians
The Island Editorial-25/03/2013
March 24, 2013, 8:32 pm Sri Lanka continues to be America’s burden. Following the adoption by the UNHRC of last week’s US-sponsored resolution, State Department Spokesperson Victoria Nuland has told the media that Sri Lanka should listen to the ‘words of the international community’. What does she mean by the term, international community? Is it the entire global community or only a section thereof led by the US? We presume she means the western bloc which has taken upon itself the task of exporting democracy to the rest of the world. However, whether it is... -Full Story-

Why people do not care about poisonous gases?
Dr Hector Perera            London
How many poisonous gases are around us? Honestly too many to count and that depends on where you are and what time of the day or night. Our lives are dependent on the air around us.  It is called the earth’s atmosphere.  It consists of several layers of gases and they are upheld by gravity.  The first layer from the earth is about ten miles wide into space.  This layer is called the troposphere.  The gases found here in the largest quantities are nitrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide.  A substance in the air that... -Full Story-

Dudley's "coup" a figment of Sir. John's imagination
H. L. D. Mahindapala

The tall tales of Sir John Kotelawela about Dudley Senanayake's involvement in the coup certainly come within the category of one of those "well-told lies". K.K.S.Perera in his response to Neville Jayaweera's recounting these yarns (Sunday Island 17/3) has convincingly exposed the"well-told lies".  Based on my personal experiences I wish to add my bit to confirm the conclusions of KKSP. President Rajapakse’s lessons from the US-Resolution against Sri Lanka
Shenali Waduge
The Rajapakse Government needs to take a reality check without delay. The US and allies inclusive of India are not concerned about the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims or how many died, disappeared or were resettled or the scale of development taking place. These are all smokescreens to hide the true agenda. They are coming after the Rajapakse’s and no one else. As we celebrate our freedom from colonial rule on its 65th anniversary nothing is more conspicuous in our literature and written records as the absence of a White Paper and a Report of a Commission of Inquiry on the period of Western Colonial presence in Sri Lanka commencing from the landing of the Portuguese in Colombo in year 1505 until the inglorious exit of the last colonial rulers from our land in 1948. Commission of Inquiry on Indian War Crimes in Sri Lanka

India demands Sri Lanka holds a “credible investigation”. Sri Lanka must oblige India. That investigation must cover two important aspects. Firstly, it must cover India’s role in creating, training, financing and supporting the LTTE as a terrorist movement and India’s war crimes committed on Sri Lankan citizens by the IPKF. Accountability for these massacres by the Indian IPKF needs to be included to the Presidential Commission of Inquiry. Shenali Waduge
When the political party implicated in the murder of Rajiv Gandhi becomes more important in terms of political survival for the Congress and the widow of Rajiv Gandhi we will say no more. The choice is in the conscience. Sri Lanka does not need to go begging to India for support. We know how that turned out in 2012.  Yet, we do need to say that the world, India and probably Tamil Nadu are greatly mistaken if they seem to think that over 1.2billion Indians hate Sri Lanka even though a handful amongst the 72million in Tamil... -Full Story-

SRI LANKA REJECTS INTRUSIVE RESOLUTION
Rasika Somarathna
* Hypocritical and smacking of double standards * Today it is Sri Lanka, tomorrow it could be another country * Pakistan says Sri Lanka needs to be helped, not chastised In a strongly worded rejection of the resolution on Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council, President’s Special Envoy on Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said that the resolution was clearly unacceptable due to its inherent flaws. The minister pointed out that preambular part of the text is ‘intrusive, bears misinterpretations and focuses disproportionately on the negative and eliminates or is dismissive of the positive.’... -Full Story-

Dr.Tilak Fernando
Caretaker at the Sri Lanka High Commission, Buluwela, finally retired after rendering an extended service, with an added bonus of a few extra years due to some problems experienced in appointing new staff to the London Mission as the British Foreign Office did bring down the curtain on Sri Lankan foreign office due to ‘non-compliance of basic regulations’ where many diplomats as well as the Administrative Service staff sent from Colombo began to abandon the ‘ship’ after their tour of duty and sought employment elsewhere in London. The situation turned into a chaotic state of affairs when... -Full Story-

THE INVASION OF IRAQ: 10 YEARS ON Search and Destroy: The rape of Iraq
By Pepe Escobar
First thing we do, lets kill all mythographers (lawyerly or not): the rape of Iraq is the biggest, man-made humanitarian disaster of our times. Its essential to keep in mind this was a direct consequence of Washington smashing international law to pieces; after Iraq, any freak anywhere can unleash preemptive war, and quote Bush/Cheney 2003 as precedent. And yet, 10 years after Shock and Awe, even so-called "liberals" have been trying to legitimize something, anything, out of the "Iraq project". There was never a "project"; only a dizzying maze of lies - including a posteriori justifications... -Full Story-

Rajiv supported the terrorists by sending jets over Sri Lanka when Prabhakaran was cornered. It simply showcases to Sri Lanka and to Sri Lanka’s leaders that there is nothing we can expect from India other than insult over insult that has now piled up over decades and possibly centuries. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1z2BWMmwzo  While Sri Lanka’s External Affairs head may still be asleep there is still no statement coming from Sri Lanka’s authorities denouncing the rising acts of violence on Sri Lankans visiting or studying... -Full Story-

Mr. Indian Prime Minister, spend your energies to deal with human rights violations at your doorstep
 Asada M Erpini
There are more than enough cases of horrendous human rights violation in New Delhi and in many other regions of India for the Indian Prime Minister to worry about. The figures are mind boggling that the learned pundit obviously would not have any time to be concerned about the alleged human rights violations in neighbouring Sri Lanka.  On 18 March, a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk, who was on a pilgrimage in Chennai, was attacked by a gang of LTTE  supporters. This incident occurred closely on the heels of another Buddhist monk, who had lived for one... -Full Story-

United States of Amnesia: No accountability for grievous errors in Iraq
RT
Ten years after the US invasion of Iraq, the humanitarian situation in the country is bleak. Critics say the hugely unpopular occupation of Iraq, and the lack of accountability for the officials responsible, has irreparably damaged Americas image. On March 20, 2003, the United States – in defiance of the United Nations, which had weapons inspectors on the ground in Iraq – opened a military offensive against the Arab Republic on the premise that the Baathist government of Saddam Hussein was harboring weapons of mass destruction.... -Full Story-

Ten Years After the Invasion: America Destroyed Iraq, War Crimes Remain Unacknowledged and Unpunished

The evil unleashed on the people of Iraq has been painstakingly obscured behind a tapestry of lies Since the end of the Second World War, American political leaders and opinion-makers have led the public to believe that the aggressive use of overt and covert military force are essential tools of US foreign policy. As we reel from one military disaster to the next, sending our loved ones off to war, killing millions of innocent people and destabilizing one region after another, each new administration assures us that it has learned the lessons of the past... -Full Story-

Upcoming Geneva UN Resolution Against Sri Lanka – Not Exactly a Surprise
By Dr. Stephen Long, Los Angeles, California
On one level it is surprising that the United States and the international community is not willing to let go of its desire to punish Sri Lanka for alleged human rights abuses at the end of its 30-year war against the LTTE terrorists; after all, the hard evidence points to Sri Lanka’s innocence. On another level, however, it is not a surprise at all. What is the value of “hard evidence” in an era when arguments and battles are won in the media, and public opinion can be bought and swayed when falsehood... -Full Story-

Sri Lanka identifies and removes a divisive Halal Certificate - Triumph for wisdom and common sense
Shenali Waduge
A huge sigh of relief prevails in Sri Lanka. News welcomed by every right thinking person followed by the announcement to remove the Halal certificate/logo from local products. Nobody needs to feel ashamed. It must be seen in terms of triumph for wisdom and common sense, or in other words a win for both sanity and rationality. The most important lesson emerging from this dispute is the dawning of wisdom that without the consent and prior approval of people of the older culture controversial and new practices of people of later or newer cultures cannot be simply... -Full Story-

Bodu Bala Sena and the Boru (fake) Police
C. Wijeyawickrema, LL.B., Ph.D.
I cannot remember if it was in the 1960s or 1970s that a civilian volunteer police force was created in Ceylon/Sri Lanka. Each big police station had a volunteer police support group. In Panadura, I can remember we teenagers called it Boru Police (fake or false police). I can understand it now as an idea similar to the present day village protection force, one of whom for example, one day saw the conman Sakviti’s wife walking on the road and reported it to the regular police.  The real police that I saw as a... -Full Story-

Afghan President Hamid Karzais weekend remarks critical of the United States easily lend themselves to an interpretation that the mutual equations of the squabbling protagonists are lurching toward a dangerous flashpoint. But Karzai is a shrewd politician, and he has essentially aired his frustrations as the critical phase of the withdrawal of US troops approaches. In a manner of speaking, he seized the rare opportunity of the visit of an American dignitary to give vent to the frustration. However, the strong likelihood is that the Barack Obama administration wont get Karzai right since much pride... -Full Story-

Dr Hector Perera          London
Back home in Sri Lanka, in the early days our servants cooked our meals on firewood stoves. When you really think about their hard work, you would realise how difficult it was to prepare the meals on firewood stoves. Not many people think and appreciate their hard labour to get the meals on time to the table. This is the guiding principle of the Tamil Diaspora, UNHRC headed by a Tamil, India controlled by Tamil political parties, manyfold Tamil NGOs abroad and in Sri Lanka, Tamil political parties in Sri Lanka and Tamil civil activists in Sri Lanka. The government of President Rajapaksa keeps appeasing Tamils. What it doesn’t realize is there will never be an end to Sri Lanka bashing if such bashing producers results for the bashers. Double Standards in US Foreign Policy Questioned
Ranking member of US House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee Congressman Eni F.H. Speaking at the committee hearing on "The Rebalance to Asia: Why South Asia Matters" , the congressman underscored that US should find a better way forward than using UN resolutions to improve its relationships with a strategically important country such as Sri Lanka .... -Full Story- (youtube.com - 06/03/13)

‘The death toll rose to at least 37 in violence sparked by a controversial death sentence handed down against the head of an Islamic party for war crimes committed during the country's 1971 war of independence’, reported The Los Angeles Times on the first day of this March. The paper further says, ‘Tensions have been running high in recent weeks as verdicts were announced in the trials linked to the 1971 war. China homes in on Pacific air supremacy
By Andrew S Erickson
Chinas DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) is no longer merely an aspiration. Beijing has successfully developed, partially tested and deployed in small numbers the worlds first weapons system capable of targeting the last relatively uncontested US airfield in the Asia-Pacific from long-range, land-based mobile launchers. This airfield is a moving aircraft carrier strike group (CSG), which the Second Artillery, Chinas strategic missile force, now has the capability to at least attempt to disable with the DF-21D in the event of conflict. With the ASBM having progressed this far, and representing the vanguard of a broad... -Full Story-

THE ROVING EYE-El comandante has left the building

Now that would be some movie the story of a man of the people who rises against all odds to become the political Elvis of Latin America. Bigger than Elvis, actually a president who won 13 out of 14 national democratic elections. No chance you will ever see such a movie winning an Oscar - much less produced in Hollywood. Unless, of course, Oliver Stone convinces HBO about a cable/DVD special. How enlightening to watch world leaders reactions to the death of Venezuelas El Comandante Hugo Chavez. Your Majesty–Are you aware that UK MPs openly support LTTE terrorist fronts GTF/BTF?
Shenali Waduge
There are times that one wonders whether organizations get banned in order to give them more notoriety and lever their campaign agendas? Such is the case with the LTTE proscribed by the UK Government under the Terrorism Act of 2000. Inspite of the UK ban, LTTE has continued to openly run its international headquarters from London, LTTE’s theoretician and wife lived in UK and openly conducted terrorist affairs, UK allowed demonstrations, events that eulogized suicide terrorism listened to by British MPs on top of LTTE stages, UK’s television is spearheading the anti-Sri Lanka campaign through its channel... -Full Story-

It was actually the IMF that ruined Sri Lanka by imposing its Structural Adjustment Programme in 1977. Big power politics flush UN Charter down the toilet

Of all the human rights issues in global conflict and post-conflict zones why is India, EU and USA focussed relentlessly --  and, more importantly, selectively -- on Sri Lanka? What is behind their persistent and the holier-than-thou obsession to hunt Sri Lanka with a vengeance? India’s obsession with Sri Lanka is making the Asian continent vulnerable to Western agendas
Shenali Waduge
India appears to refuse to accept Sri Lanka is a sovereign nation. Successive Indian governments have done their best to always undermine Sri Lanka’s sovereign status though diplomatic speeches will say otherwise. That was how LTTE came to be used as a tool to destabilize Sri Lanka. However, its choice of leader was not one to simply follow orders from Delhi. Tables turned with time when the LTTE leader agreed to a formula that would maintain his leadership in Sri Lanka but would help establish Western influence in the region – that was what turned LTTE into... -Full Story-

Why They Hate Us?-How many Muslims has the U.S. killed in the past 30 years?

Tom Friedman had an especially fatuous column in Sundays New York Times, which said something given his well-established capacity for smug self-assurance. According to Friedman, the big challenge we face in the Arab and Islamic world is "the Narrative" -- his patronizing term for Muslim views about Americas supposedly negative role in the region. If Muslims werent so irrational, he thinks, they would recognize that "U.S. foreign policy has been largely dedicated to rescuing Muslims or trying to help free them from tyranny." ‘Tradition of bullying and hegemony’: Assad lashes at UK’s ‘shallow and immature rhetoric’ towards Syria

UNHRC 2013 Procedural Resolution Means 2012 Resolution Useless
Dilrook Kannangara
UNHRC has been ridiculed by many UN members over its short life span. The conduct of UNHRC violates the UN Charter on members and as a result it has become ineffective. Unlike the UN or the UN Security Council, the UNHRC cannot impose any real punitive measures on any country. According to USA, there has not been much progress in Sri Lanka following the 2012 resolution. Hence, they argue, the 2013 procedural resolution.
