Injustice of the highest order
By Dr. Mrs. Mareena Thaha Reffai Dehiwela.
Are we a nation of  sense or nonsense? Recent events certainly should pose  this question to ourselves. Look at our most educated lot- when the Minister does not give the  pay rise as demanded what do the doctors do? They go on strike – in effect they refuse to treat the poor patients. As if the poor patients can make the minister relent. When a  politician attacks one signal doctor – who may be or may not be at fault- the doctors strike! As if that will rectify the situation.  Meanwhile if... -Full Story-

Of that timely saffron offer
Editorial The Island - Courtesy The Island
The government has adopted the proverbial carrot and stick approach in trying to deal with the Federation of University Teachers' Associations (FUTA) on strike. Minister S. B. Dissanayake has offered to pay the striking dons their salaries for the last three months if they report for work on Monday or Tuesday. The FUTA, which completed a long protest march on Friday, has rejected the minister's offer out of hand contemptuously. While the government and the FUTA are playing some game of chicken with the university crisis worsening, the Maha Nayake Theras... -Full Story-

25,000 Muslim rioters torch Buddhist temples, homes in Bangladesh
RT
Tens of thousands of rioters left a trail of destruction in southeastern Bangladesh as they torched Buddhist temples and homes near the town of Ramu. The violence was sparked by a photo posted on Facebook that allegedly insulted Islam. A 25,000-strong mob set fire to at least five temples and dozens of homes throughout the town and surrounding villages after seeing the picture, which they claimed was posted by Uttam Barua, a local Buddhist man, AFP reported. The group chanted “God is Great” while setting fire to the centuries-old temples. "I have seen 11 wooden temples, two of them... -Full Story-

On January 30, 1908 Ponnambalam Arunachalam, M. A., Cantab, Ceylon Civil Service, Barrister-at-Law, Lincoln's Inn, took the floor in the Legislative Council Chamber, the highest political institution of the day, to deliver a lecture on the Sketches of Ceylon History. Governor Sir. LTTE moves to institute war crimes allegations and “Sri Lanka in Bloom” exhibition
Asada M Erpini
Media (The Island) on 29 carried a headline news item that “a fresh LTTE initiative is underway … to press for an international war crimes inquiry”.  It is ironic that the guilty party is the one that is levelling the accusations against the armed forces and the government of Sri Lanka. The whole world saw during the final stages of the Liberation War how the LTTE cadres shot at the escaping civilians among the 300,000 Tamil civilians, who had been corralled as the LTTE’s human shield, when they ran towards the armed forces for safety after... -Full Story-

Weak Governance and fissiparous pressures in India will make things difficult for Sri Lanka in the decade ahead.
R Chandrasoma
Throughout India’s long and turbulent history, regional powers and kingships jousted for overlordship in a region ridden by tribal, linguistic and religious differences. Unlike that other great Asiatic power China, our large neighbor to the North failed to establish that homogeneity of language and culture that is the necessary pre-requiste for stable nationhood. After the enforced  unification of India by the Colonial Overlord – the British – a liberation movement sought to erase differences under the banner of a ‘Hindustan’ that emphasized the ‘Hindutva’ commonality of the peoples of India. (Buddhism was never a significant cultural force in... -Full Story-

Student Thugs inside Sri Lankan Universities-strike leader Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri is well-known for justifying LTTE separatism during the anti-Tiger war
Sumal -UHO Says
The Strike is still ongoing in universities .Apparently the protesting elements (FUTA, IUSF, JVP and some sections of the opposition) say that strike is to force the Govt: to allocate the 6% GDP for the education. But as we observed so far, their actual objectives are the 1) increment of their salary 2) hidden political objective of dragging society toward an anarchy which favorable for the JVP and other lumpen revolutionists. Government has never denied the possibility of allocating more funds to the education. Such effort needs some time and pre-analysis for proper implementation. However,... -Full Story-

Student Thugs inside Sri Lankan Universities'..........
Ajantha Premarathna
The only solution to the university education crisis in Sri Lanka is establishing “Private Universities” with foreign collaboration and allow private sector to invest in university education as government is not capable to invest such a huge budget while attending to other similar priorities such as health, transports, other infrastructure developments etc. The salaries of the private universities would definitely be more attractive than government universities. It will naturally be forced the government to match the salaries of the private universities. What FUTA fighting is illogical and absurd. They all know very well that it will... -Full Story-

What is the difference between biodiversity and ecosystem and do they affect the human lives?
Dr Hector Perera      London
“Individual species and ecosystems have evolved over millions of years into a complex interdependence. This can be viewed as being akin to a vast jigsaw puzzle of inter-locking pieces. If you remove enough of the key pieces on which the framework is based then the whole picture may be in danger of collapsing. We have no idea how many key ‘pieces’ we can afford to lose before this might happen, nor even in many cases, which are the key pieces. The ecological arguments for conserving biodiversity are therefore based on the premise that we need... -Full Story-

Is violent approach – a solution for the anti-Islamic film?
By A. Abdul Aziz,
At this time of distrust and chaos around the world especially in the Middle East the Muslim world needs  to remember the time when the Prophet Muhammad  (peace and blessings of God be upon Him) was stoned  in the city of Taif and bled to the extent that his shoes  were soaked with blood.  At that time Angel Gabriel came to him saying that at Prophet's one word he had the ability and permission from God to join the two mountains and crush the people who lived between them.  What did our injured Prophet Muhammad... -Full Story-

Saving Sri Lanka’s Education – From Whom?
Shenali Waduge
Sri Lanka’s education has been like a volcano – steadily waiting to erupt and it is getting closer to its objective. Undeniably there is no one cause for the current crisis. For Sri Lanka’s education to get on track those responsible for the current crisis must first accept accountability and then resolve to set things straight. Unlike any other ministry – the country’s future depends on the education of its younger generation and we need to now stop passing pillows and seriously set right the malpractices and corrupt ways that exist. Education certainly needs to be... -Full Story-

Dr.Tilak Fernando
The great philanthropist Sir Charles Henry De Soysa’s dream of building two schools for children in Moratuwa and naming those as Prince and Princess of Wales to commemorate the visit of Edward VII (Prince of Wales at the time) to Colombo in 1875 came true when permission was granted to his request by the British authorities. High Security Zones in the North: Tamil National Alliance and its request to India

Patriotism, Nationalism and Sri Lanka today
By Mario Perera, Kadawata
There exists a big gap, a wide gaping, even abysmal hole, between concepts and realities, between ideas and life as it is lived. Such values as patriotism and nationalism are deep seated attitudes to be expected in ordinary citizens of a country. They are considered as being normal, so much so that their absence in some elicits damning condemnations from poets and writers of all times. The English poet predicted that such persons would ‘doubly dying go down to the vile dust from whence they sprang, unhonoured and unsung’. These virtues are brought to the... -Full Story-

US and its allies are trying their level best to divert the attention of nations from the humiliating defeat at the hands of Mujahideen and subsequent withdrawal from Afghanistan.  Let us put things in perspective. A Government cannot solve our problems, it cannot set our goals and it cannot define our vision. Similarly, a Government cannot eliminate poverty, increase economy, reduce inflation, cure illiteracy, provide resources or even save the world. A Government may not have solutions but it certainly can create or worsen the problem. Is there any reason to be surprised why people hate the word Government? This is in reference to not only one Government but to all Governments round the world. Much of the trust that should define politics is no more,... -Full Story-

Top Spin By Suni
September 24th 2012  What transpired at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium ~Soorirawewa Hambantota  during and after the T20 World Cup game on Sunday between Sri Lanka and South Africa  is not only shameful but dampens all related proceedings although the circumstances involving what was tantamount to  a mini riot at the stadium does not leave room for any tolerance on the part of the authorities who have been caught in a quandry over the sheer timing of it all and at a time when the circumstances were already trying due to the weather conditions!  Perhaps it was a... -Full Story-

Insulting people's intelligence
The Island Editorial
Major Chandana Pradeep Susena's claim that he was too shocked to remember who really beat him the other day at Hilton Residence makes one feel sorry for him and the army. He is a weakling who gets easily shocked and disoriented in a scuffle with a few ruffians. If what he has told the Court is anything to go by, the army must be scraping the bottom of the barrel and it is a pity that the national military has had to depend on information provided by such personnel in making crucial decisions on matters concerning... -Full Story-

What if Israel bombed Iran? The view from Washington.
By Karim Sadjadpour and Blake Hounshell,
September 23, 2012 "Washington Post" -- September 21, 2012 - For months, Israel has threatened to strike Iran’s nuclear sites. The United States has urged restraint. If such an operation were launched, how might Washington react? President Obama is enjoying a quiet dinner with Michelle, Sasha and Malia at the White House residence on a Thursday evening in October when he gets the call. Two dozen Israeli fighter jets have just entered Jordanian airspace, apparently en route to Iran, chief of staff Jack Lew tells him. They will enter Iranian airspace, via... -Full Story-

Egypt's Morsi resets ties with US
By M K Bhadrakumar
The confusion in the American mind about Egypt ended this past weekend, The confusion actually arose when US National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor scrambled to clarify that "ally" is a "legal term of art", whereas Egypt is a "long-standing and close partner" of the United States, and, thereupon, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland butted in to contradict both Obama and Vietor by insisting Egypt was indeed a "major non-NATO ally".... -Full Story-

Syria: A photoshopped "revolution"
by World Mathaba :One of the most famous examples of photoshopping during the ongoing foreign-orchastrated Syrian crisis is the photo which appeared in Austria’s largest newspaper Kronen Zeitung on July 28 (first photo below) when readers were treated to the image on the left of bombed out Aleppo. The original photo on the right came from the European Pressphoto Agency and shows a Syrian family that was or wasn’t fleeing for the violence – but the Zionist media moguls apparently needed a more apocalyptic background to communicate their propaganda message against the Syrian government. In numerous other cases photos... -Full Story- (worldmathaba.net - 24/09/12)

Military strike on Iran would trigger WWIII: A senior Iranian military commander
A senior Iranian military commander has warned that an Israeli strike on the Islamic Republic could trigger the World War III.
We see the United States and the Zionist regime [of Israel] alongside one another and can by no means imagine that the Zionist regime would initiate a war [against Iran] without the US support….In case of the eruption of such a [war] condition, the situation would spin out of control and management; this war is likely to degenerate into the World War III. It means that some countries might enter the war in favor of or against Iran,”... -Full Story-

Ecosystems and the adverse effects on climate change
Dr Hector Perera       London
A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment is an ecosystem. This is a living community of plants and animals sharing an environment with non-living elements such as climate and soil. This might sound difficult to understand but think this way. An ecosystem can be very small, such as a puddle or an area under a large rock, or it can be vast, such as an ocean. A small bog, a single sand dune or a tiny patch of the forest may be viewed as an ecosystem where the inhabitants live. These inhabitants may... -Full Story-

September 19, 2012 The world has a lot to learn from Sri Lanka. This island nation, south of India, was torn by a vicious civil war for twenty-six years, which ended in 2009 with a clear victory for government forces over the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Since then, the ruling authorities have done a remarkable job forging reconstruction, rehabilitation and reconciliation with the Tamil minority. This is truly an example of how military victory needs to be followed up by forgiveness and peacemaking. Without a doubt, the LTTE has been one of the... -Full Story-

The vitriolic anti-Islam film, “Innocence of Muslims” has caused quite a worldwide uproar. Still, Innocence of Muslims makes numerous vile accusations against Islam and its Noble Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). One of these allegations is that the Prophet (PBUH) married Ayesha (r.a.) when she was underage.  The allegations levied against both Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Ayesha (r.a.) are meritless and based wholly on ignorance. The below evidence shows that far from being 6 or 9, Ayesha... -Full Story-

The Provincial Council election results scream for the unity of the opposition political parties of the country to deliver the nation from rulers rotten with corruption as an absolute necessacity said former army commander Sarath Fonseka addressing a meeting in Kurunegala. Addressing a group of intellectuals in the North Western city Fonseka said the polity of the country during the last 50 years did not do good to the country except in 2010 elections when all opposition parties were united under one banner and that was a reason that he was attracted to seek political office... -Full Story-

Russia's 'big bang' in Central Asia
By M K Bhadrakumar
A period of intense high-level exchange is commencing this week between Russia and its Central Asian allies - and Pakistan. What characterizes the Russian strategy is a robust attempt to develop comprehensive partnerships with these countries in preparation of the post-2014 scenario in Afghanistan with the expected withdrawal of the troops of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The Russian focus is, not surprisingly, on the three countries to the north and south of Afghanistan - Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Pakistan. Russian President Vladimir Putin's forthcoming visit to Bishkek on Thursday promises to be a... -Full Story-

The following is a compendium of news articles wherein it doesn't appear to me that the wider media have managed to draw coherent conclusions, or at least thought things through fully.Iran and the nukesSo let's start off with one of those old chestnuts namely the idea of nuclear power in the hands of that (as... -Full Story- (atimes.com - 18/09/12)

US 'pivot' as bankrupt diplomacy
By George Amurao
During United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's recent regional tour, America's top diplomat acknowledged the crucial role economic aid will play in the US's "pivot" towards Asia. Despite that recognition, Clinton failed to present concrete plans for a significant boost in non-military aid to allies in Southeast Asia, underscoring the US's fiscal straits and future ability to project financial power. As the US bids to recalibrate its foreign policy more towards Asia, the world's lone superpower faces the dual challenge of China's growing military muscle and stores of soft power accumulated through years of checkbook... -Full Story-

US hypocrites want to have "indefinite detention' of terror suspects:U.S. Warns Ruling Impedes Its Detention Powers
News from US
The Obama administration warned Monday that a judge’s ruling last week blocking a statute authorizing the indefinite detention of terrorism suspects has jeopardized its ability to continue detaining certain prisoners captured during the war in Afghanistan. In an emergency appeal of the ruling, the government asserted that United States District Court Judge Katherine B. Forrest went beyond enjoining the statute — enacted last year as part of the National Defense Authorization Act — and potentially curtailed detention powers it has been exercising for years under its interpretation of the authorization to use military force against the... -Full Story-

TEL AVIV - It is hard to remember a moment when the United States' foreign policy establishment showed as much unanimity as in its horror at the prospect of a unilateral Israeli strike on Iran. Obama rethinks the Arab Spring

The recent attacks on American and European embassies and the riots throughout the Muslim world are bringing home what the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Tehran failed to get across: that much of the world strongly resents Western hegemony. Amid chants of "Listen, listen, oh Obama! The entire nation is Osama!" and placards stating "Our dead are in paradise. Your dead are in hell" even Americans are waking up - with a start - to this uncomfortable reality. The reasons for these sentiments are complex, and some of the hype is overblown. Pen Portrait of Anagarika Dharmapala

Had he lived in Colombo in 2012 amongst i-pads and i-phones, Nokia and Reebok, Anagarika Dharmapala would have mocked the Colombians as a fawning cringing crawling mob that worshipped at the alter of the UNP and with fortunes changing offer pooja before the shrine of Mahinda Rajapakse, solely for personal advancement in search of mercenary merchandise. He would have treated any form of patronage with disdain - he did not care two hoots for position or personality, colloquially spoken.  He lived in more complicated times under the yoke of Smiths’ and Joneses’ and yet feared not... -Full Story-

What Is A Sutra? A Brief History of The Diamond SutraHidden for centuries in a sealed-up cave in north-west China, this copy of the 'Diamond Sutra' is the world's earliest complete survival of a dated printed book. Winning elections is an art to master; some do: others’ don’t, distinction surfaces in serial triumphs and failures-not on a one-off, win or defeat. There is a lesson to be learnt before grasping the basics that lead to a winning frenzy – read the mind and soul of the electors correctly before the play is enacted. Performance can be brusque or risqué, styled vaudeville or pantomime; any crudity or absurdity suffices, provided it appeals to the masses. Alternative fuels are needed because fossil fuels are running out.
Dr Hector Perera      London
A German research with a super computer estimated that 500 billion galaxies exist.  The amount of hydrogen in the universe is truly gigantic, and the natural biological environment of our Earth appears to be the same as 1,000’s of other planets. A galaxy is a vast, gravitationally bound collection of billions of stars and their associated, nebulae, stellar remnants, planets and a whole host of other smaller particles including the basic elements hydrogen and helium. Galaxies also consist of an important but poorly understood substance called dark matter. It is believed to surround every galaxy and... -Full Story-

Lessons for US from the death of its ambassador in Libya
 Shenali Waduge
The deaths of US ambassador to Libya and several others has many lessons though none of which is likely to perturb or change how US strategy has evolved to make America the world’s self-declared super bully. The marked difference in US and China is clearly that whilst China’s strategy has been to tap the local leaders of the nations that has geopolitical interest, the US and West have been adopting a very third grade approach by picking groups of frustrated youth, training them as rebels, arming them and then guiding them to destabilize nations through armed insurrections... -Full Story-

Frankenstein's monster on the rampage
Island Editorial -Courtesy The Island
Wednesday's killing of US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in Libya has shocked the world. That barbaric crime must be condemned by one and all and the perpetrators brought to justice. That the killers had been provoked by a spoof of Islam cannot be cited in extenuation of that brutal act. President Barack Obama has vowed to track them down. It is a supreme irony that the place where the US diplomats perished is Benghazi, described as the cradle of US-backed uprising against Gaddafi. Where are those who danced in the streets,... -Full Story-

THE ROVING EYE-Mr Blowback rising in Benghazi
By Pepe Escobar
"Daddy, what is blowback?" Here's a fable to tell our children, by the fire, in a not so-distant post-apocalyptic, dystopian future. Once upon a time, during George "Dubya" Bush's "war on terra", the Forces of Good in Afghanistan captured - and duly tortured - one evil terrorist, Abu Yahya al-Libi. Abu Yahya al-Libi was, of course, Libyan. He slaved three years in the bowels of Bagram prison near Kabul, but somehow managed to escape that supposedly impregnable fortress in July 2005. At the time, the Forces of Good were merrily in bed with Colonel Muammar... -Full Story-

Perfect storm over Libya
By Victor Kotsev
The outrage that broke in Libya on September 11, 2012, with the killing of the United States ambassador and three other diplomatic staffers at the consulate in Benghazi, appears to be an example of the perfect storm. Diverse but powerful agendas, local and international, converged unexpectedly to make it happen, and the tragic consequences were most likely amplified by sheer luck. Since the entire Middle East is red hot with tension, its repercussions may also be disproportionate and unpredictable. A Washington Post report indicates that Ambassador Christopher Stevens was not meant to be in the consulate... -Full Story-

The Missing Dimension in Educational Reform
R Chandrasoma
It was believed – until quite recently – that the human brain completed its ‘neurogenesis’ at the close of adolescence and that in adulthood there was a steady and sizeable reduction in the number of cerebral nerve-cells available for cognitive work. Thus IQ was supposed to peak at around the close of the second decade of life while the later years witnessed an increase in memory stores and in procedural skills but no increase in general intelligence – as measured in standard IQ tests. It appeared reasonable, then to focus all educational resources on improving the cognitive... -Full Story-

Guantanamo death: 'We may never know how the person died'
RT
It’s not uncommon for inmates to be tortured and die in suspicious circumstances in Guantanamo, journalist Ryan Dawson told RT. He adds that the coming handover of the Bagram prison to the Afghans is just a “handover on paper” and that the US will retain control of the fate of the prisoners. A prisoner who had been in solitary confinement in Guantanamo was declared dead by guards on Tuesday, while an investigation into the cause of death has been launched. Ryan Dawson, a co-author of Why Peace and a contributor to whatreallyhappened.com, explained to RT that the truth about... -Full Story-

Public perception treats Provincial Elections with a passing tweet: Not so, it’s a worthy weathervane for a Presidential election. Numbers in the majority column speaks loud. Increased majorities for the government are nearly insurmountable bringing southern constituencies under a single party giant umbrella. UPFA strength lies in its ability to cut across the ethnic barrier and in being the premier national party.  Three and half years after touching peak popularity on dismantling terrorism in May 2009, a government with accusations of crass and sleaze, graft and garbage, deception and lies, assault and plunder record a majority... -Full Story-

Wrong Choice by Eastern Tamils to Cost Them the Chief Minister Post
Dilrook Kannangara
It was a needless election that was held more than a year in advance. Although the ruling UPFA won the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, the winner is less apparent in the Eastern Province. UPFA leads ITAK by just 1% or 6,217 votes. Without the two bonus seats, UPFA and ITAK would be only one seat apart. Eastern Province is more fragmented along ethnic lines than ever. Compared to 2008, UPFA has suffered a huge setback despite ending the war, development and reconciliation. In 2008 UPFA had the absolute majority with 20 seats. The Reconciliation Process... -Full Story-

Election results a disappointment to regime change activists
P.A.Samaraweera, Melbourne
During the last few weeks, because of the Provincial Council elections, regime change activists had been working round the clock doing propaganda. Some held meetings to promote 'prospective leaders' and others wrote articles about regime change, which they said is around the corner.   Then there is the Tamil diaspora pumping money into Human Right groups, NGO's, politicians of the western block, Tamil Nadu politicians and so on, drumming support for regime change and agenda for a separate state. With the triumph of the UPFA in the 3 Provincial Councils their hopes became a dream.... -Full Story-

POLITICS SHOULD NOT BE CONFRONTATIONAL, BUT PARTICIPATORY. MUSLIMS IN THE EAST HAVE THEIR ISSUES TO SETTLE.
By Noor Nizam - Canada, September 9th., 2012.
The victory of the UPFA in the recent Eastern Provincial Council elections has to be given serious thought by the Muslim community. Though the UPFA has got 204000 votes and captured 14 seats, this does not mean that the UPFA is the governing body of the Eastern Provincial Council. If the UPFA had got at least 21 seats, then the situation will be different as the UPFA could have been sworn in to governance with their CM candidate. By doing so, they could have formed the EP Council political administration without... -Full Story-

Two amateur videos were posted on YouTube on Monday showing what appear to be images of 20 dead Syrian soldiers, blindfolded and handcuffed. They were reportedly executed by rebel fighters in the northern city of Aleppo. The video showed the men dressed in army clothes, sprawled along a road with their bloodied heads lying on a pavement. Men believed to be rebel fighters are then shown holding assault rifles calling the men “Assad’s dogs”. It was not possible to verify the authenticity of the video. Baltasar Garzon is no stranger to conflict when it comes to fighting injustice carried out by state powers. Prince of Wales College science laboratory is associated with many memories despite the traumatic incident where one of our adored teachers committed suicide by swallowing a concoction of concentrated acid as mentioned in my last episode. The laboratory had a separate partitioned office room where the Lab Master always occupied during off-periods. He was of Indian origin, short and chubby with a strong North Indian brogue, highly temperamental and a romantic type too! When he entered the classroom for physics, students used to shiver with fear. Our chemistry teacher was also an Indian young female in her... -Full Story-

Press release-John Keells Computer Services
Colombo, 06th September 2012 Evinta.IBE – a multi-channel booking platform –revolutionizes the way in which airline tickets are sold by applying new technology on old sales channels. Airlines have always provided richer functionality and better fares to Web customers. Why? Because they want to lure passengers away from traditional sales channels which are both expensive and rigid. Yet International Air Transportation Industry (IATA) statics show that over 50% of the world’s flights continue to be sold through travel agencies. These agents rely on global distribution systems (GDSs) to display and compare airline fares. These... -Full Story-

Amirthamshan
Dear Friends, I'm currently involved in a project to donate an equipment for the Batticaloa Cancer Hospital, which is the only cancer hospital in the entire Eastern Province in Sri Lanka. This equipment called the "Cryostat Machine" is used during surgery to test if the cancer cells have been successfully removed from the area in which surgery is performed. This machine has the potential of minimizing repeated surgeries in the same area of a patient's body. As this equipment is quite costly, we are in need for your generous donation to fulfill this void in the Cancer Hospital that... -Full Story-

Jayalalithaa's Terrorism
Ira de Silva London, Canad
With reference to the increased level of attacks against Sri Lankans in Tamil Nadu, it could be said that having succeeded in defeating the threat of the LTTE in Sri Lanka the country is now facing Jayalalithaa's terrorism. Because Sri Lankns have a short memory regarding the many anti Sri Lanka acts by both Tamil Nadu and the Indian Government as well as statements by politicians that India is a friendly neighbour, it is appropriate to remind Sri Lankans that it was the  Indian Government of Mrs. Gandhi that used the Tamil Nadu Government to assist it in... -Full Story-

Jayalalithaa mouth-piece of LTTE rump
P.A.Samaraweera, Melbourne
The Sri Lankan govt had issued a travel warning for those visiting Tamil Nadu. Last week 184 pilgrims had to take refuge in a church as a result of mob attacks. Last year, pilgrims visiting Mahabodhi faced the same problem. This week, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa(JJ) had asked a group of students gone to play soccer with another school, to leave Tamil Nadu. An innocent stadium officer had been suspended. Prior to this JJ asked the Central govt to send back a few military officers undergoing training in Chennai. Her next target could be the Sri Lankan cricket team !   ... -Full Story-

Sri Lanka’s President must protect Sri Lanka’s National Security from India
Shenali Waduge
When the majority of Sri Lankan’s however fascinated they are with Hindi movies remain concerned about the prominence given to India in Sri Lanka’s post conflict development  that concern should not be ignored. The concern is nothing that India can be upset about. There is a history behind Sri Lankan’s resentment of India’s action. It was the very person who India assisted to reign terror in Sri Lanka that kept India at bay and despite militarily defeating the LTTE we are now faced with a precarious situation that Prabakaran ironically kept away from Sri Lanka. Where are... -Full Story-

Jayalalitha's Anxieties Analysed Perfectly By Indian Report.
In Retrospect By Sarath Kumara
September 5th 2012  One of the main problems Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha appears to have which makes her dead set on taking on the ordinary Sinhalese for her inability to influence the Indian government to pursue a Sri Lanka policy of her choice has been analysed perfectly in a report from India by M.R..Narayan Swamy who has not minced his words which virtually ridicule Jayalalitha in almost clownish perspecctive. It is quite heartening to see such responses from astute Indian intellectuals, which title Mr Narayan Swamy is quite entitled to as the logic expressed by him... -Full Story-

A new understanding of the metaphysics of Anatta
R Chandrasoma
The Buddhist concept of ‘Anatta’ has long been a puzzle to metaphysicians outside the traditional schools. Professor Suganasiri – in an article published in your Journal – argues that the Pali word ‘anatta’ must be translated as ‘asoul’ rather than the well-established term ‘no-soul’. He believes that the early Buddhist savants wished to distance themselves from the Brahaminic notion of a soul as an indwelling essence that truly defines personhood. On this matter one must beg to differ – the greater possibility is that the Buddhists were reacting to the views of the Jainists who had great... -Full Story-
