Vasudeva is wrong to say that the President can dissolve the Provincial Councils anytime
Media Release – Chanaka Bandarage, Sri Lanka Support Group
On 30 May 2013, in Sirasa TV program ‘Satana’, Hon Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara, participating in a debate with Hon Minister Champika Ranawaka stated that  people should not be scared of provincial governments because the President can dissolve them anytime. To stress  this point, he mentioned Articles 154A1, 154 J, 154K, 154L, 154M and 154N of the Constitution (these are the English version Articles, he referred to the corresponding Sinhala ones). These provisions do not provide power to the  President  to dissolve the provincial councils willy nilly: Article 154A1 – this... -Full Story-

Higher Quality of Life and Lower Unemployment of Tamils are the Root Causes of the 'Ethnic Problem'
Dilrook Kannangara
Telling the truth in a world full of deception is revolutionary. Decades of Tamil propaganda has turned lies into truths. Widely acclaimed Nazi principles of propaganda are practiced by Tamils more than anyone else. Thanks to their highly successful Nazi style propaganda, most Sri Lankans belonging to the majority Sinhalese community needlessly feel guilty of wrongdoing by commission and omission. Often quoted Tamil grievances are not the root causes of the so-called ethnic conflict. In fact higher PQLI (Physical Quality of Life Index) and lower unemployment among Sri Lankan Tamils are the real root causes of the... -Full Story-

Indian experts challenge Jayalath Jayawardana's pro-LTTE press release
Chennai, 14 November, (Asiantribune.com): Indian National Congress activists and anti-terrorism groups expressed shock at recent utterances of the Sri Lankan politician Dr Jayalath Jayawardana who urged Indian intervention to save the beleaguered Tamil Tigers in Kilinochchi. They said that Dr Jayawardana’s Press Release issued in New Delhi stating that the Tamils in the north are starving and India should intervene to save them is contrary to the reports issued by UN bodies and various INGOs on the humanitarian situation. "Is the UNP, of which Dr Jayawardana is a... -Full Story-

Who should decide on the 13th Amendment ?
by Chandre Dharmawardana, Ottawa, Canada.
A seemingly democratic-looking statement, popular with the liberal-minded types like the candle-vigil people of Colombo is the proposition, "It is up to them, and not to  us, to decide what the scope of the 13th amendment should be.   Who are we to impose our will on them? If the TNA is representative of the Tamils, then we know that they have always officially rejected the 13th amendment in any form. They have merely found it useful as a bone of contention. Last year at the party session in Batticaloa (Madakalapuwa) Mr. Sampathan... -Full Story-

Editorial shows Wijeywardena clan staging fiery devotions to capture power again
By Wendell W Solomons
In Sri Lanka mature people - outside the city elite - prefer legumes including several grams, for protein. However, in certain spots in the world travellers cannot find vegetables. We also know this was the case of the West also upto the time when fridges became available. A unity for compassion 'for animals' must include humans. This mammal has been manipulated into devasting wars by 'higher castes.' Arriving from the USA in the 19th Century, Col Henry Steele Olcott fought against casteism by establishing schools to break the hold of Buddhist priests monopoly on education... -Full Story-

Let’s all sacrifice and stop cattle slaughter
Editorial-Daily Mirror
The self immolation of the Ven. Bowatte Indarathana Thera in front of the hallowed Dalada Maligawa on Vasak Day in support of the growing campaign for a ban on cattle slaughter needs to be addressed urgently and effectively so that this sacrifice could be turned into a positive dimension for religious and ethnic unity in diversity. Unfortunately after the monk—a former member of the Jathika Hela Urumaya—died last Saturday night some extremist elements try to create trouble which could have escalated into religious strife. There were heated and angry disputes among some groups and the police outside... -Full Story-

Sri Lanka Ministry of External Affairs EXCLUDES Buddhist Organizations from meeting Thai PM?
Shenali D Waduge
The Prime Minister of Thailand arrives in Sri Lanka on May 31, 2013 to mark the anniversary of a highly significant Buddhist event. Her arrival is to promote Buddhism and commemorate the Buddhist links between the two nations. Given the nature of her visit it is questionable why the Minister and Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs have excluded ALL the renowned Buddhist Organizations most of whom have direct links with Thailand and who are patronized by the Thai King himself. Life Abroad - Part 29: SORTING DIPLOMATS FROM THE OFFICERS
Dr. Tilak Fernando
At a time the Sri Lankan foreign service, especially the diplomatic Corps, is being subjected to criticism by certain section of the Sri Lankan community both at home and abroad, it would be prudent to reminisce on a Sri Lankan diplomat, Sir Edwin Wijeyeratne, who had lived up to his profile and discharged his duties as a professional and a charismatic ‘ambassador’ to Mother Lanka. CHOGM - Canada Boycott to Increase Tamil Votes

The Editor The Island Colombo, Sri Lanka. Dear Sir: The statement by a former Canadian High Commissioner, Mr. Martin Collacott  confirms the opinion of many Canadians that they know why the current Canadian Government is making anti-Sri Lanka statements and threatening to boycott the CHOGM in November - it is based not on principle but on Canadian domestic politics, an attempt to get the so-called Tamil vote away from the other political parties. Spare a thought
Ms. Michelle Alexander
In Sri Lanka the laws pertaining to the welfare of animals are antiquated, and lag behind other nations which have incorporated higher ethical and scientific standards into their legislation. The current bill on Animal Welfare has already been sanctioned in 2006, but is yet to be enacted.  The governing ordinance is the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance, No. 13 of 1907, which is an outdated statute and does not apply to all animals. For instance, the ordinance interprets “animals” as any domestic or captured animal and includes any bird, fish or reptile in captivity. In... -Full Story-

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) is in the forefront among the accusers, with the bankrupt politicians of Tamil Nadu vying to outdo one another as the latter has discovered that shedding buckets of tears on behalf of Sri Lanka Tamils is a convenient and low-cost strategy to steal the limelight. An Open letter to David Cameron – the Prime Minister of England- Pave the way for genuine reconciliation and peaceful co-existence, or face international isolation.

The recent wanton killing of an English soldier has brought to surface the ugly racist manures prevalent in the English society for last 75 years since the Empire ceased to exist. The people from earlier colonies arrived in England, some seeking greener pastures, some like the Indians and Pakistanis  who were forced to leave from the African countries. Ever since the waves of migrants chose to  live in the UK and engage in menial vocations the overt and covert  racism in England was a an ugly force operating in the background.  The racism was manifest in open... -Full Story-

In the world of physical knowledge an overarching law is that called the Second Law of Thermodynamics (The Law of Increasing Entropy) which says that in a closed physical system, disorder or chaoticity alone can increase with the passage of time. Any overall initial organization can only weaken as the system ages. Note the important caveat - given by the words 'overall' and 'closed'. Within a closed system there can be subsystems that are anti-entropic - in which order increases at the expense of the general trend of disorder in the system as a whole. Life -... -Full Story-

Srilankans can never become vegetarian
Dr. Mareena Thaha Reffai,
With the recent immolation of  the bhikku demanding cattle slaughter to be banned from Srilanka and advocacy for vegetarian food to be staple diet of Srilanka is gaining attention. We can safely predict this will never come to pass. The first and foremost reason being that the politicians will never allow it to pass. If anyone thinks all the politicians who will give up the delicious gourmet food at the parliament for any  reason they have another thought coming. They will fight tooth and nail to stop it. But then the alternative to allow it... -Full Story-

Shame on you Sunday Island Editor
Christine Perera
The Sunday Island editorial is shameful and resonates why the Buddhists are angry. When a monk self-immolates himself in protest against cattle slaughter – what does the Editor of the Sunday Island say – “why only cattle” using his pen and his ability to reach out to the people who buy the island newspaper and belittle the sacrifice made by a Buddhist monk who gave up his life for a cause. Is this editor so naïve to not connote cattle with all animals – does he think that the monk can mention every living animal to meet... -Full Story-

Changes in Law - Attempt to get away with War Crimes

Changes in Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) of 18 September 2001 that  allowed USA forces to go after the perpetrators of the 11 September attacks on Pentagon and World Trade Centre are being worked out. The barbaric geographically limitless War on Terror that allows USA without any legal authority to carry out armed attack on any nation. So far those countries that witnessed US attacks, over a decade and a quarter, include Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Mali, Egypt, Libya, Sudan, Congo, Syria and many more. The Buddha through modern literary eyes
By Prof. Sunanda Sugunasiri writing from Toronto
British author, Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses was regarded as blasphemous and raised ire in the Islamic world. A fatwa condemning the author to death was issued by the Iranian spiritual leader in 1989.The furore brings to mind the treatment of the Buddha in two works of fiction, one originally written by a Swiss writer and translated into English, and the other in Sinhala in Sri Lanka. There are both parallels and differences between Herman Hesse’s ever-so-popular novel, Siddhartha, and Rushdie’s work. Both were written in a Western language and published in... -Full Story-

The Buddha Proclaims the Second Law of Thermodynamics as Parting Gift!
Prof. Suwanda H J Sugunasiri, writing from Toronto, Canada
The Buddha’s last words, and last advice to his Disciples, were, "Samkharas are subject to decay. Strive with diligence" (Vaya dhammā saükhārā. Appamādena sampādetha). Samkhāra is a difficult term which is probably why there is no Sinhala term for it. All we have is a Sanskritized phrase, samskāra dharma. What I remember seeing on a funeral banner half a century ago was a jocular “anisa saema sakaradam”, a rhythmic invitation to dance, it sounded, more than a call to share grief! But that’s altogether another story. An English translation... -Full Story-

India has not only lost its moral compass in foreign policy which was packaged and hailed as the "Panchaseela" at the height of the Non-Aligned Movement but also the strategic compass to navigate in the Indian Ocean. India needs an ethical / balanced foreign policy to win back the moral and political leadership which it lost in the post-Indira Gandhi period. India's moral posturing in international fora may appeal to the West and its "strategic partner", America, right now, not to mention its local boot-lickers and knaves. Dawn of the Tamil Eelam through the Northern Provincial Council – What the Government and we, as citizens can do can do to stop it

Further to our Sinhala Media Release (posted on Lankaweb on 24 May 2013), we unequivocally  repeat that formation of the Northern Provincial Council under 13th  amendment of the Constitution will lead to formation of the Tamil Eelam. We say the Government can fundamentally do two (2) things to abolish the 13th  amendment, prior to the proposed Northern Provincial Council election, as follows: Article 86 of the Constitution – Based on the issue of ‘national importance’ the President can call for a national referendum. The question to be asked from the people will be... -Full Story-

Dilrook Kannangara
Twisting history to claim ownership of land has become the modus operandi of certain communal elements in the island. Obviously they cannot have a long history in the island as they still practice religions and use languages not unique to the island. If they had a long history in the island, there is no reason why these equally developed people could not have developed their unique religion and language like ethnic Sinhalese. It is true Sinhalese may have partially their origins in the Indian subcontinent and Buddhism arrived in the island from there, but they have since developed their... -Full Story-

A hypothesis (or belief) is false if it does not square with the facts. It is also false if its deductive entailments do not match the facts as empirically revealed. Suppose some learned person declares with a great sense of infallibility that those born when stormy weather conditions prevail will die prematurely. This is not very different - in epistemic worth - from the astrologers who declare with great conviction that 'the position of the wandering stars (planets) in the zodiacal constellations at the nativity of an advanced relation of the Apes (and Monkeys) determines its secular... -Full Story-

Intervening at a panel discussion that followed the screening of the  controversial film at the premises of the European Parliament last week, which was jointly organized by Amnesty International,  Human Rights Watch and  International Crisis Group, the envoy said that civilians, who spoke in Tamil, at no stage claimed the attacks were carried out specifically by the... -Full Story-

A MATTER OF DIPLOMACY
Chandra. Fernando Educational Consultant USA
Since the two UN resolutions were brought against Sri Lanka in Geneva, some Sri Lankans including the Diaspora have been trying to find scapegoats for the failure to defeat these resolutions. It may be well to remember they are UN RESOLUTIONS voted on by MANY COUNTRIES. Looking at the incessant verbal attacks on Sri Lanka by Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada and the recent threatening rhetoric of Nick Clegg in the House of Commons, any difficulty between the US and Sri Lanka pales by comparison. we should not blame the Sri Lankan diplomats... -Full Story-

Western science, astrology and arsenic – I, II & III
by Nalin de Silva
This is a response to two articles by Mr. R. I am not an anti science zealot but I have evidence in Aristotelian logic as well as in Catuskoti logic to demonstrate that western science is nothing but humbug. I do not claim that Dr. Waidyanatha calls me an anti science zealot but I thought it is appropriate to respond to... -Full Story-

Awaiting Indictment of Allied Forces for strategic bombing and planned starvation of German CIVILIANS

The topic is accountability. The question is why has there been zero accountability of crimes against humanity committed by Allied Forces which specifically targeted civilian populations with strategic area bombing and post—war comprehensive starvation campaign that killed 2million German POWs and 5.7million German civilians – how else can such a number die after the war has ended? Why have these crimes escaped the attention of the World Court and why are present day Germans and Japanese leaders not calling for justice for the millions of civilians killed by Allied Forces during and after World War 2?... -Full Story-

Scarcity of Hope Not Equally Distributed Across Countries

I wish to answer R Chandrasoma in his response to my article appeared in Lankaweb. I thank him for his response. Humans are by nature ambitious which is natural and is the driving force of improvement. However, a reasonable assessment of what the future holds is made by most. This is found in investment, political and social spheres of human endevour. From the 1970s to 2009 Sri Lankans hoped against hope that a day will dawn when they could win the war on their terms. Western role in the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) of Sri Lanka

It is well-known that US has taken a lead role in combating, and sometimes fostering Islamic extremism in many parts of the world. Its support for the Taliban in Afganistan by arming them against the Soviets is well known. The US has also supported Islamic groups to create tension is some African states to counter other tendencies. In many of these moves, and in some of its UN lobbying, the US uses third parties to cover its hand. BUDDHISM INVOLVES INNER TRANSFORMATION THROUGH INTELLECTUAL EFFORT AND SCIENTIFIC REASONING
Dr. Daya Hewapathirane Vancouver, Canada
No useful purpose is served by explaining to or arguing with those who depend exclusively on religious books and accept their words without question or without debate. No monotheistic religion respects the human mind. Spiritual wisdom is lost when one embraces  monotheism. Understanding the human mind is the central theme in the Buddha Dhamma. It is up to us to decide where we are heading and it all depends on our intelligence not on any so called “holy” book. One may read the Quran or Bible or whatever, and examine what’s in it. Copulation of 13A Nazis and Tamil National Fascists Spell Doom for the Nation
Dilrook Kannangara
The problem with 13A proponents is they don’t listen to reason. They are hell bent on the full implementation of it one way or the other. Their fallback argument is 13A is now law and it must be implemented. Absurd logic. No law is set in stone. 13A was never discussed in the community; it was simply imposed by India. Under the agreement between the two countries cemented with the Indo-Lanka Peace Accord (1987), the spineless Jayawardena administration was forced to pass it. The `Citira Velayuta Cuvami Kovil' has been located here at least since the 13th century and commented upon by various writers including  the Portuguese historian de Queyroz. Is training students in vocational certification by National Schools a solution to the lack of sufficient higher educational opportunities?
Damien
In the last 50 years Sri Lanka has made huge strides in the primary and secondary education. My estimate is that at least 90% or more of children of school going age are attending schools. Everything changes once the students sit for Advance Level Examination. For over 300,000 who sit for Advanced Level only 25,000 or so get admitted to the Universities. Considering the better organized nature of the school system they could do more on the issues such as youth unemployment and lack of technically qualified personnel in the country. The Chola invasions had left the original home of Theravada Buddhism with so few monks that it was hard to convene a chapter and make valid ordinations. Anawrahta sent the monks and scriptures, and a white elephant as present for Vijayabahu. The Burmese monks ordained or re-ordained the entire clergy of the island. Building the future, gifting hope
 Janaka Perera
Every dark cloud has a silver lining, they say.  The tsunami of December 2004 brought untold suffering to many in Sri Lanka as elsewhere.  But for the villagers of Kosgoda 100 km South of Colombo and of Miyagala about 100 km from the east coast it was a blessing in disguise.     In January 2005 - a month after the calamity - Sri Lankans domiciled in Germany together with their German friends founded the Sahana Tsunami Relief organization to help those who survived the tsunami in the two villages. Ahmadis' mission of peace in an age of terror
By A. Abdul Aziz
Just weeks after the terrorist bombings at the Boston Marathon, the global leader of the world’s 200 million plus Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has brought his religion’s message of peace, public service and uplift to the faithful of Southern California.   While those principles are embraced by most of the Muslim world, the Ahmadis' outlook is distinctive. The visiting Ahmadiyya Head (Khalifa), Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, is critical of mixing religion and governance and points to the restive Middle East countries in the "Arab Spring" aftermath as examples of discord born of religious rule. He speaks lauding... -Full Story-

Saudis, Qatar fire UN torpedo at Syrian peace
By Kaveh L Afrasiabi
UNITED NATIONS - It is a popular term at the United Nations. "Multilevel peace process" is used often to refer to complementary efforts in conflict-prevention, and the UN-s history is rich with countless such examples. Yet, somehow, the UN has misdirected its energy in the case of Syria, by entertaining a General Assembly resolution that, if adopted, will likely act as a disservice - call it negative input - with respect to the US-Russian peace conference planned for the end of May.... -Full Story-

The glaring missing element in the Electricity Tariff Hike.
by Chandre Dharmawardana
While most commentators howled in opposition to the Electricity tariff hike , I have argued (e.g., 7th May, Island newspaper) that this would jolt the nation into a more salutary developmental trajectory. The first stages of development relate to basic agricultural capabilities needed to feed the people.  The vision of successive governments before and after independence had been fired by the ancient hydraulic civilization of Sri Lanka. This led to the Galoya, Walawe, Mahaweli and other schemes that created the nation's foundation for agriculture as well as hydro-electricity. As the agricultural needs become established, the... -Full Story-

British complicity in murder of Burma’s national hero Aung San raises issues for wider investigation of British crimes in colonial era
Shenali D. Waduge
Mr. David Cameron, British Prime Minister, has vowed to give Sri Lanka lessons on human rights when he attends the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Sri Lanka in November 2013. It is an astonishing statement coming from a head of a country that once ran an Empire not so long ago, on which it was said that ‘the Sun never sets’. At its peak the British Empire was the largest empire the world had ever known. Closely associated with Empire Rule was the term ‘White Man’s Burden’ coined by Rudyard Kipling in a poem (1899)... -Full Story-

Get rid of 13amendment and “Manape“ system
Shenali D. Waduge
The nation has been discussing 2 issues but not a single person seems to have the guts to do away with either though everyone gives a nod that both are adversely affecting the nation. The first is nothing that has been indigenously incorporated and will always be seen as a stepping stone to carving out a separate state while the other is a bizarre system of electing representatives who end up killing each other and they happen to be from the same political party. The foreplay of Russian-American high-level exchanges can be very revealing. When 13A Nazis join Regime Change agents it creates real change. This is the latest ploy of the two and apparently a seamless one. It has the potential to work better than all previous attempts because it attacks the heart of the success of UPFA since 2004. UPFA’s election success is no match to the UNP’s 17 year rule. The article comes at a time when the Sri Lanka-India relationship is plummeting to a new low mainly due to the Sri Lanka Tamil and Tamil Nadu factors. The United Nations independent commission of inquiry on Syria has concluded that no evidence of the use of sarin by Syria-s government troops has so far been uncovered, said the lead commission member Carla Del Ponte on Sunday.... -Full Story-

West ‘fomenting a proxy war’ in Syria
RT
Israel’s recent attack on Damascus and the talk of ‘red lines’ over alleged use of chemical weapons by government forces is part of a broader plan by the West to foment war in the region. That is according to Charlie McGrath, founder of the news website wideawakenews.com. He told RT of the early signs seen and the PR tactics used to manufacture that war. Moreover, with the decision by the West to arm the Syrian rebels now on the horizon, while the same rebels are still terrorizing Iraq and Afghanistan, McGrath paints a very grim picture.... -Full Story-

Continuing the review of Dayan Jayatilleka's book, Long War, Cold Peace -- Part II- Searching for ethics in a five-month war
H. L. D. Mahindapala
Of the many tangled and intertwining issues that are bound to sprout from the 33-year-old war there are only two serious questions worth asking for those pursing reconciliation, peace, justice, understanding the past and, above all, the ethics of the overwhelming violence that impacted on all communities: 1. was the war declared by the Tamil leadership in the Vadukoddai Resolution of May 14, 1976 necessary? and 2. what did the Tamil leadership, which insisted on waging war rejecting national and international offers of peace even on the banks of Nandikadal, achieve in dragging the Tamil... -Full Story-

The nation waits for closure
Nimal Fernando
The nation waits for closure. Stepping back ... and looking at the larger picture, it could be argued that this has been some decades in coming .... It could be argued, also, that Sri Lanka is closer than ever before, at this moment in time, to this long-elusive goal. History tells us that such 'moments in time' for so many nations around the world, have not lasted long. Which is why time is of the essence for Sri Lanka to finally put the ethnic issue behind it. Doing so will decidedly demand an end to... -Full Story-

Have the Powerful Global BRICS Jettisoned India to the Mighty Chinese Dragon?
Prof. Hudson McLean
India seems to walk into its own cans of worms making a Comedy of Errors on its own way. The global association BRICS, consisting of Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa could not give a rats-arse about China entering Indian territory whilst there are vital global considerations boiling on the fire.  There are several areas which India had treaded into, making itself an international joker.  1: Commercially, Indian corrupt, inept, inconsiderate, bureaucratic government "intellectuals" have created a backlash from some of the largest global MNC, Royal Dutch Shell, Vodafone, LG, Nokia and many others, by trying to blackmail them into... -Full Story-
