Lobbying politicians in western nations
Anjalika Silva USA
Lobbying politicians in western nations against terrorism is clouded by huge political donations that have negated all other efforts made by Sri Lanka. Yet, we suffered the longest with this menace.  The LTTE activities continue as a form of thuggery and gang warfare against their own people breaking the law with no consequences in some countries.  The fear of being threatened and demands of monetary contributions continue for those living abroad although the war is over in Sri Lanka.  They have no political aspirations to provide for the better good of the Tamil people ---especially those who suffered... -Full Story-

Asoka Weerasinghe Kings Grove Crescent . Gloucester . Ontario. Canada
31 May 2011 The Editor THE OTTAWA CITIZEN   Sir: You reported that Christopher Hayns, UN's special rapporteur had said after viewing the British Channel Four video which alleged Sri Lanka troops executing Tamil Tigers, that "What is reflected in the extended video are war crimes of the highest order - definitive war crimes." I wish that we could come to some conclusion of this controversy by the UN accepting the challenege by Mr. Siri Hewawitharana one of the world's leading digital video systems experts and former head of... -Full Story-

War Trauma in the military, their families and Communities
Dr Ruwan M Jayatunge  M.D.
Combatants Affected by the Prolonged War The 30 year armed conflict in Sri Lanka has produced a new generation of veterans at risk for the chronic mental health problems that resulted following prolonged exposure to the war. Over 200,000 members of the Sri Lanka armed forces and police had been directly or indirectly exposed to combat situations during these years. There had been nearly 20 major military operations conducted by the Armed Forces from 1987 to 2009. A large number of combatants from the Sri Lanka armed forces were exposed to hostile battle... -Full Story-

Pharmacies, chemists and their role
Dr.Tilak Fernando
In order to prevent or reduce harm to patients and to improve public health, mechanisms for evaluating and monitoring the safety of medicines in clinical use are vital. Equally qualified pharmacists are expected to be professional in their duty, with the knowledge and expertise to provide authoritative information to medicines. In Sri Lanka, law specifically warrants ‘Pharmacists’ to hold a professional certificate. Despite such laws, what is taking place is many qualified registered pharmacists while displaying their licence overtly employ ‘unqualified cashiers’ to dispense medicine to the public. Press reports recently indicated that the Cosmetic Devices and... -Full Story-

Prednisone Abuse by Ayurvedic Quacks in Sri Lanka
By Anil Perera
I have read with sadness the reported case of cricketer Upul Tharanga being tested positive for the banned substance Prednisone.  Sunday Times claims that Prednisolone was prescribed to him by a well known alternate medical practitioner. Prednisone is a synthetic corticosteroid drug used to treat certain inflammatory diseases. It is used in the treatment of asthma, allergic disorders and rheumatic disorders. Improperly used it has serious side effects leading to diabetes, depression, glaucoma, cataracts and a host of other conditions. Unfortunately some unscrupulous quacks who call themselves Ayurvedic doctors abuse Prednisone and include it in very... -Full Story-

Why do the children hate to learn cooking?
Dr Hector Perera UK
There are plenty of reasons why the children are reluctant to learn some basic cooking; a major point may be the smell of food that might get deposited on them while cooking. Unfortunately some of the urban children are addicted to takeaway foods than home cooking. Food smell on you? These escaping molecules of fats, oils and all essential oils can deposit on anything in the kitchen or it might go all the way to your sitting room and deposit on anything including on the flat screen expensive TV and on other things such as... -Full Story-

Welcome to the Violent World of President Obama

Giving into India: India forgets that Sri Lanka is a sovereign country
By Garvin Karunaratne Ph.D.

As customary there is much hue & cry over the grand initiative to provide a phased out 3-week leadership training for 22,000 undergraduates with food, lodging (separate for males & females) & attire that will include 171 periods of learning. Instead of applauding this venture, I find that the opposition UNP and JVP have opposed to this program. The Truth about Foreign Aid
By Shenali Waduge
It is predicted that by 2020, total world debt would reach $200 trillion and 963million people live in hunger. Every day 16,000 children die of hunger-related causes. These are the very countries that not only take loans but end up becoming prey to IMF and  World Bank structural adjustment programmes that seal their economic downfall forever. When a country falls into debt, it means it owes money. Inability to pay that money is likely to lead to bankruptcy. Countries that fall into debt generally to Western governments and international institutions controlled by the west,... -Full Story-

Doublespeak of ICRC?
- Kumar Moses
Credibility of ICRC officers who worked in Sri Lanka during the last phase of the war is highly dubious following their obvious doublespeak. The foregoing are examples and irrefutable proof of their manipulation of facts to suit the agenda of external interested parties who wish to see disintegration of the island nation. WILL NORWAY EVER BAN HER ADOPTED CHILD LTTE?
Malin Abeyatunge
May be agitation to ban LTTE in Norway would never have crossed the minds of the Sri Lankan governments or any other world-wide anti-LTTE organizations as Norway has been the adopted home of LTTE. I may be wrong as I don’t remember seeing/reading any demand to ban LTTE in Norway though there were umpteen numbers of letters/articles written against Norway and Eric Solheim for their cordial relationship with the LTTE. But it was taken for granted with Eric Solheim as a peace facilitator who has been appeasing LTTE from the very beginning, giving LTTE cadres military training,... -Full Story-

Leadership Training for University Students has More Good than Bad
Geoff Wickrema Kotte
At last the university system of Sri Lanka is moving in the right direction. The proposed leadership training session for all university students is a very timely and farsighted concept that must be implemented as soon as possible. It has immense benefits for the nation, future professionals and for the society at large. The following are some of these benefits. There are many other benefits in addition to these that certainly warrant an early implementation. 1. Facilities at military bases can be used for the purpose with very little additional capital investments or huge recurrent expenditure.... -Full Story-

TIME TO REDEFINE AMERICA'S GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY
By Nimal Fernando
Perhaps it is time to rethink “manifest destiny.” After all, since charity is believed to begin at home, America has an urgent problem on her hands: keeping a great many home fires from going out. Worse, over a million home owners could not pay their mortgages and had to foreclose. Globally, it is time America stopped playing the now-familiar role of global firefighter ... and turned those hoses on the hot spots at home. Pick any American state, as they are all in a huge financial hole, to the collective tune of $430 billion, a situation... -Full Story-

‘Now there is no more mankind, but animal-mankind’
Dr.Tilak Fernando
In this progressive age, man’s behaviour is described in numerous configurative maxims. From time immemorial all religious leaders and their doctrines have been aiming at elevating man to a better life and to uplift his ‘soul’ (athma) to higher ‘spiritual stations’ after this life. Despite all such efforts, over the centuries, ‘there is no more mankind now, but only animal -mankind!’ - (Sheik Mowlana Nazim - Seal of Saints - Naqshbandi order in the world). Norway's Damning Attitude Over Rights Issue A Reflection On Frustrations Based On Incapacity To Sustain The LTTE whom They Championed Once !

May 17th. 2011 Norway needs to be exposed once and for all, for the Machiavellian  stance it has adopted  towards Sri Lanka on the Tamil Tiger issue which they once surreptitiously supported from many perspectives and was damning towards their bifurcated attitude at times reflecting hypocrisy and pretence as empathetic towards Sri Lanka yet their transparencies as Eelam sympathisers more often than not seemed to stand out rather apathetically and indiscriminately and now their pro Eelam sympathies once again seems to have surfaced!   When the Norwegian government is said to be stepping up pressure on Sri Lanka over... -Full Story-

Che-mystry and chemical attractions.

When a dummy female cockroach is smeared with the synthetic smell of a young female cockroach and placed in the middle of a deadly sticky glue paper, all sexually active male cockroaches get fatally attracted to the dummy. When they tried to get to her they get stuck and more come along to find this fatal attraction. The subject chemistry is a sort of a mystery subject, one makes things or synthesise things but cannot see the actual molecular structure of a single molecule. At the end of that flight and the extended discussion with Fr. Quintus Fernando, I had an invitation to visit that exotic place. What the Superpowers did to Somalia & Zimbabwe:That is our fate if we are not united and not smart
By Garvin Karunaratne, Ph.D.
Somalia was once a country with a vibrant economy. That was not far away- it was all in the Sixties. Earlier it had been a nomadic country that developed its agriculture and liuvestock. There the last ruler was Said Barre. He drew enormous help-loans, from Soviet Russia to develop his county. Those were the days when the USA vyied for power with Soviet Russia. Said Barre turned to the USA, that offered more liberal loans. In that process the country got into debt that it could sustain only by getting further loans- funds from further... -Full Story-

Jayalalitha’s dog and pony show a futile attempt at mass hysteria
By Philip Fernando
AIADMK leader Jayalalitha is acting like Prabhakaran’s avatar beating the war drums in Tamil Nadu after becoming Chief Minister. The mass hysteria she feigns is nothing but a testament to her conflicting interests with New Delhi. So her rhetorical onslaught seemed directed at Sonia and Rahul Gandhi in order to drown Tamil Nadu’s gargantuan economic crisis. Ironically, Rajiv Gandhi took a direct hit from the psychotic Prabhakaran. Now Jayalalitha re-enacts the insipid melodrama periodically talking of a mythical Eelam. The dog and pony show reappears whenever the turf battles get hot in Tamil Nadu. At the... -Full Story-

Prabakaran brought mayhem to Sri Lanka for 30 long years. President Mahinda Rajapaksa, after taking over the reins of Executive Powers of the country, had one pinpointed ambition to ‘free the country’ from the terrorist grip. The Vadukoddai Resolution, which declared war on the democratically elected state and the nation as a whole, is “a crime against peace”. This principle was first enunciated and tested at the Nuremberg trials in convicting the fascist Nazis and later incorporated into the UN Charter. When peaceful alternatives were available to resolve inter-ethnic relations – however tardy they may have been -- the Jaffna Tamil leadership opted for a military solution by declaring war on May 14, 1976. By Peter Baofu, Ph.D.
The recent "gruesome" killing of Osama bin Laden by U.S. special forces in Abbottabad, Pakistan on May 02, 2011 was received with jubilation in the U.S. (and its allies), and there is even an euphoric talk in Western mainstream media about the coming end of al-Qaida and the emerging triumph for the war on terror. Contrary to this current euphoria, the legacy of Osama bin Laden will live on, just as the wars in the world will continue. There can be many different reasons for this, of course; consider, for illustration, five of them below.... -Full Story-

14 May 2011With Operation Unified Protector in Libya, NATO enters war for the third time in its history. And like its first-ever conflict with Yugoslavia in 1999, the alliance is anything but unified. But gone to war it has, carrying out air strikes against forces loyal to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and more than 100 sorties on most days. The half-hearted nature of the intervention can be seen as a glass half full or half empty for the alliance. But over time the cherry-picking approach of the members could reduce it into irrelevance. UN dilemma: To back or not to back Libyan fighters
A stalemate on the battlefields of Libya and a political deadlock on the UN Security Council have left Western powers with a stark choice — covertly aid the fighters or leave them in the lurch. Analysts and UN diplomats warn that if the United States, Britain, France or their allies were to exploit loopholes in, or secretly circumvent, a sanctions regime they themselves engineered in February and March, it could prompt Russia or China to adopt a similar stance on the sanctions against Iran. In a leaked internal memo on the 20th of August 2009, Norway's deputy ambassador Mona Juul targeted Ban and exposed his qualities unequivocally. He was “spineless,” “charmless,” and helplessly, “incapable” of getting anything done, reported Mona to her Bosses in the UD. Memo under question itself was conveniently leaked prior to Ban’s planned arrival in Oslo, and its timing strategically calculated by the conspirers. Ban cancelled the schedule trip to Oslo subsequent to the leak! He recognised the implications... -Full Story-

First it is journalists like you who bring disrepute to journalism as a whole. The posting of Sri Lankan Diplomats should not concern you. This is prerogative of the government.  These defence chiefs deserve a little bit of time to enjoy their lives before retirement for the grand job they did in exterminating rabid LTTE terrorists in Sri Lanka while undergoing extreme hardship in the battlefronts for the past 20/30 years.  It is only now that a Sri Lankan can live and work peacefully or go anywhere they without the fear of suicide bombing vermin. The Travels of a Journalist—67-We fly from Fargo to San Antonio, then drive to Big Bend National Park on a 9-day adventure of camping.

Having camped in almost every national park in the West and the Midwest, I turned next to the South. My attention focused on Big Bend National Park located in south Brewster County, Texas. The Big Bend NP encompasses approximately 324,220 hectares. The mammoth size of the park becomes clear when you realize that almost one-quarter of the 1,000 miles of Rio Grande/ River Bravo, which makes up the boundary between the United States and Mexico, flows through the Big Bend territory. Leading the Buddhist lay followers away from rituals and Ceremonies to the path of the Dhamma is the duty of the Buddhist Monk.
By Charles.S.Perera
Rituals, which are procedures for conducting religious practices cannot all be eliminated, because they are the customary practices that kept a belief system alive.  Different religions have different rituals and religious practices some of  which such as animal sacrifice, and  smearing of animal blood are unacceptable  and should be removed  by all means .  Even the worship of « lingam » though it is an ancient custom seems out of place in an environment of sanctity and worship, but they are not connected to Buddhism and therefore no further elaboration seems necessary. The lies behind the West's war on Libya
Jean-Paul Pougala
It was Gaddafi’s Libya that offered all of Africa its first revolution in modern times – connecting the entire continent by telephone, television, radio broadcasting and several other technological applications such as telemedicine and distance teaching. And thanks to the WMAX radio bridge, a low cost connection was made available across the continent, including in rural areas. It began in 1992, when 45 African nations established RASCOM (Regional African Satellite Communication Organization) so that Africa would have its own satellite and slash communication costs in the continent. This was a time when phone calls to and from Africa... -Full Story-

Transcendentalism and American-Anglo-European power politics
By Mario Perera, Kadawata
Advaita and Transcendentalism are two perspectives of existence that are literally poles apart and irreconcilable. The former is a fundamental tenet of the Asian mind and outlook, whereas the latter expresses the Christianity influenced Western perspective on that subject. Advaita means non dual or not two. This Oneness is said to be the fundamental quality of everything. Duality has nothing to do with being separate but with appearing to be different. Things can appear different without being separate. It is a belief, principally among Asian civilizations that there is a Oneness within all life of... -Full Story-

The U.S. is the World's Greatest Purveyor of Violence
By: Mike_Whitney
The greatest threat to Libyan sovereignty and independence is the United States of America. Nothing else comes close. Gaddafi hasn't been targeted because he's a tyrant, but because he sits on an ocean of petroleum. That's what this is all about, right? If Libya's main source of wealth was car parts or coconuts, there never would have been a war.The notion that a leader does not have the right to put down an armed rebellion against the state is too absurd to dispute. If we apply the same standard to the demonstrations in Wisconsin, then the teachers... -Full Story-

LIBYA: ALL ABOUT OIL, OR ALL ABOUT BANKING?

If the Gaddafi government goes down, it will be interesting to watch whether the new central bank joins the BIS, whether the nationalized oil industry gets sold off to investors, and whether education and health care continue to be free. Several writers have noted the odd fact that the Libyan rebels took time out from their rebellion in March to create their own central bank – this before they even had a government. THE DAY I FELT ACUTE DISTASTE FOR DR.DAYAN JAYATILLEKA
By Darshanie Ratnawalli
The unease I have long felt about Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka crystallized into distaste on Sunday 13 June 2010 when I came across his interview in that day’s Lakbima. It provided a startling glimpse into the dimension of reality Dr. DJ either inhabits for real or wants to sell to the unwashed masses. The way he tells it, there are lessons to be learnt from the whole Dutugemunu episode (api dutugemunu rajathumagen padam igenagatha yuthuy) because king Dutugemunu handled this dichotomized collective identity thing rather well. He had the right idea about how to manage a country... -Full Story-

Ranjit Wickremeratne
UN backed America and Nato has killed the children of Gadaffi ruler of Libiya last night. This is the second time this devil killed his children.First when Regan was the President of America and Now Obama the peace maker cum peace breaker. They were under the age of 12 years only. So like them how many may have died already from those heavy bombs falling on LIBIYA? Can any human being approve these kind of bombings in civillian population? Isolate Tamil National Alliance (TNA) until they denounce Vaddukoddai resolution. Let Srilanka not bend to TNA’s pressure tactics.
By Lenin Benedict- Toronto
It was on the 14th May of 1976, at Vaddukoddai, the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) under the Chairmanship of S.J.V.Chelvanayakam Q.C, M.P (K.K.S) adopted the Vaddukoddai Resolution, which radicalized the entire Tamil population of the North and east, which also played a greater role in militarizing the Tamil youths and diminished the political role of the Tamil community. Since this day, the former TULF and the present TNA has never participated or practiced a constructive politics but destructive politics which has brought the Tamil community to Mullivaikal. The seed for Mullivaikal tragedy was sown... -Full Story-

Who was the most brutal terrorist between Prabahakran and Osama? Which is the most brutal and deadliest Terrorist outfit in the world LTTE or Al-Qaeda?
Malin Abeyatunge
After the tragic 9/11 terrorist attack on the world Trade Centre in New York and Pentagon in Washington killing around 3000 innocent civilians, then President George W Bush (Jnr) declared war against Al-Qaeda. Recalling Bush’s comments on terrorism, he said “Terrorists are always terrorists wherever they are” and “We have no business with Terrorists”. Well, what he meant was the Al-Qaeda Terrorist outfit led by Osama bin Laden and his associates and not the most brutal terrorist outfit LTTE as branded by the FBI. Although Al Qaeda and LTTE were banned as a terrorist organization in the... -Full Story-

P.A.Samaraweera, Australia
After Minister J.L.Pieris briefed the Diplomats, about the Darusman Report, Patricia Butenis, Ambassador for the US.,  as well had summoned a meeting of Foreign Envoys at her residence to discuss the Report. However, notable absentees had been Russia and China.   Apart from Foreign Envoys, she had also invited Jehan Perera and Pakiyasothi Saravanmuttu of the National Peace Council, who were drumming support, with the west, to rescue the LTTE leadership during the war. There had also been a few other NGO's from the Transparency International, Rights Now and so on who held the same views.   Prof. Pieris as... -Full Story-

PANEL REPORT, TAMIL NATIONAL ALIANCE AND NATIONAL RECONCILIATION
Malin Abeyatunge
Whither reconciliations with the Tamils when Tamil National Alliance being the main Tamil political party in the National Reconciliation efforts welcomes the flawed and biased report by the three member panel appointed by UNSG Ban-Ki-Moon. TNA should remember that they cannot eat and have the cake also. TNA’.s endorsement of this crap report is a slap on the Sinhalese and bouquet to the LTTE outfit It’s an endorsement that TNA has still not given up their ideology for a separate State for Tamils. TNA unequivocally supported Sarath Fonseka for presidency and now the same people wants him... -Full Story-

When another terrorist was killed in Sri Lanka people danced in the streets, and the West called it triumphalism .
By Charles.S. Perera
When President Barack Obama announced the death of  Osama bin Laden, it twas reported that, the «  The news touched off an extraordinary outpouring of emotion as crowds gathered outside the White House, in Times Square and at the Ground Zero site, waving American flags, cheering, shouting, laughing and chanting, “U.S.A., U.S.A.!” In New York City, crowds sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Throughout downtown Washington, drivers honked horns deep into the night.”   We Sri Lankans can understand it but when our people in Sri Lanka broke out into similar “outpouring of emotions” the Western media... -Full Story-

OnLine Visas for visitors to Sri Lanka - Counter Productive!
Prof. Hudson McLean
The Online Visa rule is a hassle, which is Counter productive. This is simply a bureacratic creation to bloat the ego of some "bird-brain" in the administration. There are several options to the Visa Fee. 1: The Visa Fee could be charged to the Airline Ticket. Recovery from the Airline. 2: Collect on Arrival along with the Visa Application. Immediate Cash, like in Indonesia. Most of my travelling is done at short notice. And book my tickets through travel agents. The agent fixes an e-Ticket which awaits at the check-in counter, available when I produce the passport.... -Full Story-

Eelaam plot: Sri Lanka torn between India & the West
Shenali Waduge
The present scenario that prevails is opportune to reflect. Eelaam still remains the key stratagem. While India may have created the concept of Eelaam to prevail in Sri Lanka, India would never allow Eelaam to see fruition in either Tamil Nadu or Sri Lanka though the West is attempting to revive the Eelaam cause. For the West an Eelaam in Sri Lanka becomes a perfect ploy to destabilize India. What Tamils on both sides of the Palk Straits need to remember is that Eelaam promoted by India or the West would never give the type... -Full Story-

Any Attempts by Tamil Tiger 'Rump' To Disrupt The Lankan Cricket Tour Of The UK Must Be Nipped In The Bud As An Act Of Terrorism
Top Spin By Suni
May 1st 2011 They tried it once in Canada in the not too distant past failin  miserably nonetheless and there are terrorism analysts who believe that the vicious attack on the Sri Lankan Cricket Tour Bus in Lahore, Pakistan was also linked to Tamil tiger terrorism and now they seem to be attempting it all over again in the UK  this time veiled in the excuse of support for a concocted UN Panel report which hardly has the official sanction of the  UN and merely led by a biased Secretary General motivated by falsely concocted 'evidence'. Time to Eliminate Rituals from Buddhism
Article 6 Rituals are not limited to worshiping statues or engaging in various ceremonies.  In fact some ritualistic practices include animal sacrifices and bloodletting, which are primitive and barbaric habits.  In the 21st century, there is no rationale and place for such practices.  Watching such cruel practices being performed on helpless animals or humans will only make the psyches of participants more disturbed and certainly not develop peace or tranquility.  In fact, rituals that increase delusions, greed and hatred are contrary to Buddha’s teachings. Do we need rituals? Many statues and religious structures (stupa) are architecturally symbolic and archaeological... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 02/05/11)

Govt. acted humanely ; MR

Ban Ki Moon’s advisory panel failed to accuse Terrorist Front Organizations of Tamil diaspora, for aiding and abetting terrorism in Sri Lanka
By Charles.S.Perera
Fast unto Death or Self Immolation demanding  Ban Ki Moon to withdraw his advisory  Panel report is  only giving importance to a foolish man’s attempt to bring a sovereign state to its knees either to satisfy his “  masters ” who ever they are, or to assert a stupid sense of self importance because he thinks he is the Secretary General of an International Organization, and his decisions are sacrosanct.  This is what happens when the wrong man is given responsibility which he is « too small » to hold.   Ban Ki Moon is a person who will... -Full Story-

"Sri Lanka Dare Not Criticize the UN Panel" Says "Himal South Asian"? Is This another Ban Ki Moon Supportive And What Gives"Himal South Asian" Carte Blanche~ To Make Such Bold Assertions ?
In retrospect By Sarath Kumara
April 30th. 2011 After many months of work as the story goes, the United Nations' Secretary-General’s Panel of Experts~ to all appearance  biased 'experts' with Tamil Tiger Sympathies hand picked by an equally biased UN Secretary General  seems to have apathetically  penetrated the United Nation's direction of operations as it comes from  its highest level. Incredibly the UNSG is bungling his way through his appointed designation in typical bull in a chinashop fashion with misrepresented rhetoric now backed by an equally inept flybynight news engine calling itself Himal South Asian, also reeking of pro Tamil Tiger sympathies probably egged... -Full Story-

Enact Laws to Punish Persons Posing Threats to Reconciliation
Dilrook Kannangara
Government of Sri Lanka without delay should enact laws to protect hard won peace and reconciliation. Various groups are trying to undermine the reconciliation process with hate mongering, spreading rumours and trying to impose a foreign reconciliation model which is actually about pitting ethnic communities against each other than reconciliation.   War crimes investigations and allegations of war crimes can seriously harm the reconciliation process. If such processes go ahead, Tamil people in the north will look at defence forces personnel with hate, mistrust, fear and as enemies. Security forces personnel are doing a great job trying... -Full Story-
