‘Sinhala Bushism' and the 13th Amendment
C. Wijeyawickrema, LL.B., Ph.D.
Dayan Jayatilleke, Ph.D., (DJ), writing as the son of the late journalist Mervyn de Silva, has utilized the American idea of the Father's Day for three related purposes: (1) to try to prove that Bushism (militarism) does not work even in an otherwise unbeatable Israel, (2) that Bushism (Sinhala over-lordship) cannot succeed in Sri Lanka, and (3) Sri Lanka's peace and prosperity lies in his 13-A now and 13-A plus later plan (The Island, 6/22/2009). This is repeating the "little now-more later strategy" of SJV Chelvanayagam. In this process he has added a yet another... -Full Story-

Geneva, human rights and the level playing field
By Kalana Senaratne Courtesy The Island
It is not wholly wrong or inaccurate to claim that current developments emanating especially from Geneva suggest that the ‘West’, to a large extent, has been ‘colonized’ by the ‘Rest’ in the field of human rights, and that the West finds itself unable to gallantly trot around preaching human rights to the rest of the world. But more importantly, these developments denote the emergence of a certain level playing field, where the West and the Rest could meet and discuss and debate, more openly, matters relating to human rights concerning their respective... -Full Story-

WHEN WORDS BETRAY THE FEELINGS
ALI SUKHANVER
The world suffers a lot, not because of the violence of bad people but because of the silence of good people; said Napoleon. Words are more important than actions. What we do comes latter than what we say. Actions can be forgotten but words are ever living. The most painful thing regarding the present day media men is that they sometimes pay least attention to the credibility of their words. Misreporting and disfigurement of the facts has become a professional requirement. A few days back an article appeared on different internet websites written by a fictitious... -Full Story-

Why should the BBC reporter raise his eye brows over increasing the size of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces ?
By Charles.S.Perera
BBC does not seem to have changed its perverted reporting with the aim to divide people and create dissention among them. Take any of the articles on Sri Lanka in the BBC News website, and there is none without reference to the "Sinhala Majority" , or " Sinhala Buddhist Governments ", followed by a quote from an interview or a statements uttered by a racist like Mano Ganeshan, who still remains a terrorist in mind. The minority majority difference was introduced by the British colonialists, and continues to be used incessantly by the BBC the British pro terrorist... -Full Story-

Who is responsible for Dengue?
By Dr. Mrs. Mareena Thaha Reffai Vanderwert Place, Dehiwela.
The government seems to be taking genuine strong measures to curb the dengue menace by checking backyards house to house, imposing fines, imprisoning culprits of negligence and what not. However, at least in the city of Colombo and suburbs, the mosquitoes must be laughing all the way to the next victim; for while the backyards are being inspected, cleared, fumigated and people being fined and put behind bars the mosquitoes are having a rollicking time laying the eggs on the heaps of garbage on the main roads. All passengers arriving at the airport by car, 4x4, Double cab or any other small vehicle, are forced to get down at the Air Force checkpoint, at entrance to BIA and board a bus. Shame On You British Law Enforcement , Metropolitan Police And London Bobbys!
Insight By Sunil Kumar For LankaWeb
June 28th 2009 -Very understandably Sri Lanka has to be furious over the Lord's cricket ground attacks in London England by pro LTTE thugs on innocent Sri Lankan spectators. The British Law Enforcement Agencies including the British Government should first hang their heads in shame and then launch a full inquiry into what transpired at the T-20 Cricket Final between Sri Lanka and Pakistan and what prevented the local Police from intervening, apprehending and arresting these thugs! Ironically there were many warning sent out that these very type of incidents could transpire... -Full Story-

Frederica Jansz’s sob story tinged with arrogance and ignorance

It could be an interesting slant in one of its many columns or a record of a detailed telephone conversation with a subject of its many "investigations". What may not surprise you would be the chants of "culture of impunity" that the Leader claims to be prevailing in Sri Lanka. June 27th 2009 To the UNP MP who has suggested that the majority Sinhalese community should tender an apology in brotherhood to the Tamil minority for the wrongs committed against them in the past, it must be said " get real" as there is no apology needed by the Sinhalese to the Tamils unless it reflects back to a time when during a previous hegemonistic as well as senseless administration certain UNP marauders carrying household lists of residents went from door to door with a murderous mob behind them attacking innocent Tamils for which heinous crime,... -Full Story-

Now, US tries to undermine Lanka tourism revival plan
by Norman Palihawadana and Harischandra Gunaratna -Courtesy The Island 29-06-2009
The Sri Lankan government yesterday said that a US State Department travel advisory aimed at discouraging US citizens from visiting Sri Lanka was part of US strategy to undermine the country. The politics of postwar Sri Lanka
By Dayan Jayatilleka Courtesy The Island
As Paul Berman once wrote, "somewhere in the world it is always 1941". There comes a time in the life of every society when it is faced with an existential threat or challenge. It is the social forces or elements that rise up to this challenge and successfully overcome this threat that then have the power as well as the legitimacy to place their stamp on what comes after. Those who stood on the wrong side of history, or never rose to the occasion, or who abandoned the struggle partway, or simply... -Full Story-

A gesture that will never be forgotten
Reflections by Comrade Fidel
I made a stop in the drafting of a material about a historical episode on which I have been working for two weeks now to express my solidarity with the constitutional president of Honduras, José Manuel Zelaya. I was impressed when I saw him on Telesur, haranguing the Honduran people. He was energetically denouncing a gross reactionary refusal aimed at preventing an important popular consultation. That is the "democracy" that imperialism defends. Zelaya has not infringed the law in any way; neither did he resort to the use of force. He is the President and... -Full Story-

DISARMING THE ARMED…. OF OUR KIND
Piyal Samarakone - Dubai
Significance of winning the war against LTTE is not a one way ticket to prosperity without a doubt. But it certainly leaves the doors open to counter and engage with numerous ill-fated issues in our society. If terrorism was the epicenter of lawlessness, the corruption which mingled with armed gang culture is very much within its destructive perimeters. Decades of multi-faced conflicts prevailed in Sri Lanka over shadowed countless adverse issues, even some unethical unlawful acts looked very much lawful as they simply exist far too long to prove the Gobel's theory. "Give war a chance"
Edward N. Luttwak -Foreign Affairs Jul/Aug 1999, Volume: 78, Issue: 4
Summary -- Since the establishment of the United Nations, great powers have rarely let small wars burn themselves out. Bosnia and Kosovo are the latest examples of this meddling. Conflicts are interrupted by a steady stream of cease-fires and armistices that only postpone war-induced exhaustion and let belligerents rearm and regroup. Even worse are U.N. refugee-relief operations and NGOs, which keep resentful populations festering in camps and sometimes supply both sides in armed conflicts. This well-intentioned interference only intensifies and prolongs struggles in the long run. The unpleasant... -Full Story-

The Tamil Diaspora - Supporters of LTTE
Prof. Hudson McLean
Who are the King Pins of the Tamil Diaspora who support the New Leadership of LTTE? Its time that all Tamils who supported or were forced to support the Tamil Diaspora during the past, to Name & Shame the Collectors. As expressed by the brave Tamil persons, who are now emerging out of the dangers of the criminal LTTE gangs, there must be thousands who were forced between a Rock & a Hard Place. Reminding about enemies that had to be fought against vigorously in the past thousands of year in Sri Lanka, Venerable Dharmasiri Thero of the Washington Buddhist Vihara said one of the land mark victories was that of Dutugemunu to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation and the recent military victory of President Mahinda Rajapaksa was a greater victory than that of Dutugemunu. Is Devolution an Option for Domination?
Prof. Hudson McLean
This question has but a single simple answer........NO! Devolution will create Domination in the most cruelest and wicked format. Devolution will create the Ghetto syndrome. Lets face the facts.  Sinhala, whether one likes it or not, is the majority in Sri Lanka.  Just like in Great Britain, the English are in majority compared to Scots, Irish and the Welsh, and there has been no cry for separate independent States due to discrimination, if any,  caused by the English majority. However, a captain needs the performance of his team to be the fullest. Sri Lanka remained unbeaten as they entered the Finals at Lord's. We performed well in the Finals but Pakistanis did better. IRA has been a sensible rebel group. Unlike "terrorist" groups, they didn't hold on to the impossible and the unachievable. They budged from their stance and made peace possible. OBAMA HAS NO EASY TASK
Reflections by Comrade Fidel
I remember that, when I visited the People's Republic of Poland, during Gierek's government, I was taken to Osviecim, the most notorious of all concentration camps. There I learned about the horrible crimes committed by the Nazis against Jewish children, women and senior citizens, which resulted from the implementation of the ideas contained in the book Mein Kampf written by Adolph Hitler. Those ideas had been implemented before at the time when the territory of the USSR was invaded in the quest for vital space. By that time, the governments of London and Paris incited... -Full Story-

Open letter to Murray McCully, New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs
Roshan Mendis NEW ZEALAND
Dear Mr McCully, I am deeply concerned that the National-led government has failed to designate the Tamil Tigers as a terrorist entity, despite pre-election pledges by National to move swiftly to bring New Zealand into line with our like minded allies on this issue. I refer to your newsletter of 8 August, 2008, in which you categorically assert, "'That the Tamil Tigers are fully fledged terrorists is beyond dispute." In the aftermath of the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka, the Tigers are pinning all their hopes for revival on the concerted efforts... -Full Story-

The South African Apartheid created Nelson Mandela.. The Tamil Tiger Terrorism created Mahinda Rajapaksa.  The Moses of Sri Lanka! Mahinda Rajapaksa not only saved the Island of Sri Lanka from the Curse of the Tamil Tiger Terrorist, but also led the innocent Tamil civilians from bondage and terror into a better land. Prof Rajiva Wijesinha Secretary General Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process
15 June 2009 The University Teachers for Human Rights has issued yet another report on the situation in Sri Lanka which, as with its previous reports, merits serious attention. I have always admired their commitment and efforts  at objectivity and, even when I disagree with what they say, I have noted their sincerity. If you talk to any of them, you will feel that they are at a loss of something that Sinhalese have taken for granted. That is; Tamils are being disappointed for they have no country that they could call ‘homeland'. The warning about the risk of triumphalism came days before the 65th anniversary celebration of D Day, by the leaders of the US, UK and France. In the USA there are annual re-enactments of the battles of the American Revolution – the War of Independence against Britain—and of the Civil War against the Secessionist Confederacy. While the risk of triumphalism does indeed exist and must be cautioned against, I think there is yet another risk, an opposite one, which we must avoid. The ecstasy of the previous three matches gave way to the agony of the last. Lowly Ireland nearly humbled the giant killers that we were. The previous matches were mainly won on the strength of the opening partnerships and of course the inevitably brilliant contributions of the three bowling ‘M's; Murali, Mendis and Malinga. Yesterday the batting extravaganza of Mahela saved us the blushes. According to commentators we were expected to score anything between 180-200 runs against the Irish fledglings. Western media’s disgraced and hopeless campaign against Iran

The Western media’s campaign during the lead up to the just concluded election provides a case study in the study of how their oligopoly collude to destabilise countries to implement ‘regime change’ through criminal and underhand means. For an independent observer, or anyone who has followed Iranian affairs from the pre-Shah era to the present, it was obvious that the incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was immensely popular in the country: he represented the Iranian mindset of a generation born in to the events following the British ’hush hush’  invasion of Iran in 1918. China, the emerging superpower, has achieved its success through the pragmatic application of its three-pronged cultural inheritance based on a hybrid of Buddhist, Confucian, and Daoist principles. Pragmatism, defined so elegantly by the illustrious Deng Xiaoping—“It does not matter whether a cat is black or white; if it catches mice, it’s a good cat”—illustrates the crux of Chinese multi-dimensional thinking, which stands in contrast to the one-dimensional thinking of the West that arrogantly identifies Western ideology with universal values.   Most Chinese, especially... -Full Story-

Optimal versus stable strategies in the politics of devolution
R Chandrasoma
In the study of the dynamics of complex systems a distinction is made between outcomes that are ‘optimal' and those that are ‘stable'. The ‘optimal state' is that which is most rewarding for all parties concerned. Unfortunately in many realistic situations, optimal states are unstable as they are vulnerable to ‘attacks' from competing and potentially destructive options. The good they confer is fragile in the sense that they lower the threshold for organized disruption. Once overthrown, the damaging fall-out can be disastrous. In contrast, a stable strategy confers fewer benefits initially but has the capacity to withstand... -Full Story-

The irony in these instructions, and a serious flaw in their war preparation, was that these "battle-hardened" fighters had never familiarised themselves with the ‘tactical response' in a worst case scenario. They sure needed to have a white flag tucked in somewhere!  Now it... -Full Story-

The end of humiliation
C. Wijeyawickrema
Five hundred years of West European colonialism (white man's burden) rested on a strategy of humiliation of the natives it conquered. This took place by way of both physical (guns) and psychological (primitives, barbarians, savages, infidels, idol worshippers and widow-burners who should be saved) means. Thus, the Portuguese came to Ceylon in 1505 with the Bible and the sword in the two hands. Pope Alexander divided the non-Christian world between Spain and Portugal (Treaty of Tordesillas-1494) to facilitate this task. In 2009 they come with evangelism and lots of dollar bills. OBAMA’S SPEECH IN CAIRO
Reflections by Comrade Fidel
On Thursday the 4th of June, at the Islamic University of Al-Azhar in Cairo, Obama gave a speech of special interest to those of us who are closely following his political actions given the enormous might of the superpower he leads. I cite his very own words to indicate what I think are the basic ideas he expressed, thus summarizing his speech to save time. Not only do we have to know that he spoke but also what he said. Park and Ride - Why it is a Failure
By Dr. Mrs. Mareena Thaha Reffai  Vanderwert Place, Dehiwela
Recently a news item indicated that only about 5 people make use of the park and ride van servies. This is probably due to lack of proper advertisements, Many people I speak to did not even know that such a scheme existed have alone about the whereabouts of the parking space or about van services available.  Since the traffic congestion is a serious problem, much more vigorous advertising of this plan is essential. Detailed information of the routes of van services available, the parking spaces, the security for the cars... -Full Story-

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama in a discussion with visiting Japanese Special Envoy Yashushi Akashi yesterday noted that there was a need to revise the role of the Co-Chairs in the light of the current developments in the country. Tracing the history of the Co-Chairs to the Tokyo Conference in June 2003, the Minister stressed the need to broaden the agenda and a shifting the focus to a more development oriented outlook in the post-conflict phase that Sri Lanka has entered. WAR CRIMES- NOT A LEG TO STAND ON
Dr Donald Chandraratna, Australia
The diktats of innumerable conventions beginning from Franz Leibers code in 1863, which try to limit the rights of belligerent warring parties to minimise the suffering of civilians are usually claimed as Western in origin. This may be correct although similar but more virtuous sentiments of righteousness in the conduct of war are numerous in the inscriptions of Kings and rulers of the Orient in historical antiquity but they are not codified in that manner. Leaving that to a side any perceptive reader will note that behind the Codes and Conventions of the West,... -Full Story-

Keeping account of the dead bodies by the West
Jay Deshabandu
The facts are here. There is credible evidence from the IDPs that LTTE had killed hundreds or thousands of innocent Tamils as they fled from the clutches of the outfit. In the final stages of the conflict, many LTTE carders were in civil clothes. So anyone with a weapon would be a target. Even the soldiers were able to video how the LTTE was shooting at the civilians.  Yet, some fools try to blame and put these killings into the Sri Lankan government's account! In addition, there were thousands of suicide bombers who blew up by themselves.... -Full Story-

New Zealand’s Complicity in Sri Lanka’s Civil War
by Roshan Mendis June 2009
In the aftermath of the end of the civil war in Sri Lanka, New Zealand should re-examine the small but potentially incendiary role it may have inadvertently played in the conflict. In 2005, New Zealand's Agency for International Development (NZAID) handed over $121,500 in tsunami relief funds to the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO), an organisation long suspected of being a front for the Tamil Tigers. That same year, the TRO had its charitable status revoked in Britain because it had "not been able to account satisfactorily for the application of funds." Two years later,... -Full Story-

The Tamil Diaspora should stop financing demised LTTE and help our Tamil brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka
By Dr Raju Selva
I have been pleading through the print media over the last few years for the Tamil Diaspora to stop helping LTTE financially, logistically and politically and prolong the war between the Sri Lankan Government and LTTE. I have tried to convince the Tamil Diaspora that they were chasing a mirage of a mythical Eelam created by now dead Prabhakaran but was unsuccessful. Even at this moment, pro-LTTE apologists are continuing their protests down the streets of big cities in a vain attempt to justify LTTE and bring disrepute to the armed forces and Government of... -Full Story-

Human Rights is Not a Western Invention-- Totally
Dr D. Chandraratna Perth, W. A
The Europeans who are now championing the cause of human rights ought to remember that in their original conception in the West they were not meant to apply to all human beings. By and large they covered only the human beings of European extraction. Even James Mill, the English philosopher (1806-73) who is often quoted as the great thinker in his ‘Essay on Liberty' denied the human right of liberty to backward nations, women and children, while living in India. This meant that up till the 20 th century the Indians including the... -Full Story-

By Charles.S.Perera.
The plot against the President Mahinda Rajapakse, and the Government Armed Forces, fizzled out at the special meeting of the UN Human Rights Council held in Geneva on the 27 May,2009. The Western countries remained isolated with 29 countries standing fearlessly against the arbitrary decisions the rich countries of the West think they have a right to take against developing countries.  The voting at the council meeting shows how the countries of the West stood feebly before the massive vote demonstrating to the world that they are faux democrats, without principles. Why the West will not give up
Prof Rajiva Wijesinha Secretary General Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process
The appalling behaviour of the West since we started to succeed in our war against terror has been deeply upsetting. In order to deal with it successfully however, we must cease to be sentimental about our old friends and patrons, and analyse why they are now being so horrid. I believe there are six types of rationale, some of which shade into each other, not all of which are all bad. If indeed the motivation is the clearly wicked one, then there is nothing we can do... -Full Story-
