Terrorist-Propaganda Exposed:Channel4 and Ofcom Owe an Explanation to Sri Lanka and Her Citizens
By L. B. Wasantha (USA)
A group called the 'Sri Lanka Almanac Vidhyuth Koshaya' has presented the unedited version of the UK Channel-4’s “Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields”, of which the broadcast has caused much international decry and condemnation against Sri Lanka. As appeared first in LankaWeb, the Facebook post , by the Sri Lanka Almanac, has caused serious consternation regarding the propagation of fabricated mass-media against Sri Lanka by terrorist-funded media sources. Importantly, the Facebook video choreographs, in perfect unison, to the voices in the background: And, all dialogs are in Tamil, the native-language of the terrorist outfit,... -Full Story-

The USA Has Neither Justification Nor Mandate To Intimidate Sri Lanka On Cooked Up"War Crimes Issue" Which Was A Continuation of the Global War On Terrorism.
LankaWeb Weekly Editorial  June 28th 2010
As the USA continues to intimidate Sri Lanka on the "war crimes" issue with threats to examine ‘other options’ unless Sri Lanka quickly addressed war crime allegations, the related double standard becomes more and more apparent and somewhat duplicitous if the USA is serious about the conditions issued to Sri Lanka which reek of a bipartisan leaning towards what the adversaries of Sri Lanka want to accomplish namely discredit the GOSL using Sri Lanka's war on terrorism as a tool. Some of this entourage is labelled by some as the 'rump of the LTTE ' and a rump which needs... -Full Story-

Arsenic Contradiction and Beyond!
Sanjeewa Gamagedara (USA)
Several weeks ago, a team from University of Kelaniya revealed the presence of arsenic in drinking water in the Rajarata area and in commonly-used pesticides. Furthermore, they related this finding with Rajarata’s chronic kidney disease.  Later, another investigation carried out by Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) found that arsenic is present only in two brands of pesticides out of about twenty eight. These studies have resulted in considerable enthusiasm in the media and among the general public. In this article, I do not expect to promote either of these studies, as I do not have access to... -Full Story-

Lettre ouverte à Monsieur Bernard Kouchner
Dr Bandula Kothalawala  London
U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq cost over $4 trillion and leave 225,000 dead
Wick G.
ow! And no war crimes? A new report out of Brown University estimates that the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq--together with the counterinsurgency efforts in Pakistan--will, all told, cost $4 trillion and leave 225,000 dead, both civilians and soldiers. The group of economists, anthropologists, lawyers, humanitarian personnel, and political scientists involved in the project estimated that the cost of caring for the veterans injured in the wars will reach $1 trillion in 30 or 40 years. In estimating the $4 trillion total, they did not take into account the $5.3 billion in reconstruction spending the... -Full Story-

France admits arming Libyan rebels
France has become the first country to openly admit it has supplied the Libyan rebels with weapons – a measure officially banned by the UN Security Council resolutions 1970 and 1973. A French military spokesman, Colonel Thierry Burkhard, said the arms, including machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, as well as munitions, were parachuted in to besieged rebels. According to the official, the deliveries took place in early June in the western Nafusa Mountains, when Gaddafi's forces encircled the civilians and refused to allow a humanitarian aid corridor there, AP reports. France has been among the main powers behind the NATO-led air... -Full Story- ( - 29/06/11)

“Aliens have two legs and two arms” – Russian scientist
A Russian scientist claims that humankind will not have to wait long before extraterrestrial life is found. He said that the discovery will happen in about 20 years and revealed what aliens may look like. ”The creation of life is as irrevocable as the creation of atoms, as there are fundamental laws which are the same for the whole universe,” Andrey Finkelstein, director of Practical Astronomy Institute told journalists on Monday. “Life on other planets exists and in 20 years we will find it,” Finkelstein added. According to the scientist, aliens look pretty much like humans. They have two legs,... -Full Story- ( - 29/06/11)

France crosses threshold for NATO by shipping weapons to Libyans fighting Gadhafi’s forces
By Associated Press, Updated: Wednesday, June 29, 10:39 PM
PARIS — France acknowledged Wednesday that it airlifted weapons to Libyan civilians fighting Moammar Gadhafi’s forces in a besieged mountain region south of Tripoli, becoming the first NATO country to do so in a major escalation in the international campaign. The bold move was likely to draw criticism from countries leery of the allied use of force in Libya’s civil war — like China and Russia — and crossed a threshold in hopes of a breakthrough in the protracted NATO-led mission.... -Full Story-

France drops guns to Libya tribesmen
By Europe correspondent Philip Williams
The French government has admitted it has supplied weapons to Libyan rebels fighting Colonel Gaddafi's forces not far from the capital Tripoli. A leading French newspaper is reporting the arms drops were made without the knowledge of France's NATO allies. Despite media reports that the weapons included rocket launchers and anti-tank missiles, the French military says the supplies only consisted of rifles and ammunition. A spokesman for the French general staff said the air drops in the Nafusa mountains began with humanitarian aid, including food, water and medical supplies. But he said guns... -Full Story-

The Political Solution - On the Road to Political Suicide
Janaka Yagirala
Often we wake up to hear news we never wish we heard. Among them are occasions when people of great repute and stature commit blunders that cause irrevocable ruin. Great soldiers like Gen. Lakshman Algama and Gen. Janaka Perera were two such people who made this ultimate mistake and paid the ultimate price. Everyone has the right to engage in politics and be a member of whatever political party they wish, except one particular type, a political party of traitors. Notes on Buddhist Journalism—4-News paradigm seen as Trojan horse that carries false façade of objectivity
By Shelton A. Gunaratne© 2011 Professor of mass communications emeritus at Minnesota State University Moorhead
Writing to this esoteric list, a namarupa labeled Senaka Weeraratna says, “Before we go into abstract issues on Buddhist Journalism as proposed by an academic based in the USA, we must address more mundane issues as highlighted in the remarkable Press Commission Report under the Chairmanship of Mr. Justice K.D. de Silva (1964) while taking into consideration present day requirements.” Let me surprise SW a wee-bit by letting him know that I also keenly followed the Press Commission proceedings from 5 Dec. 1963 through 30... -Full Story-

The International Criminal Court at The Hague is a pariah in the world of Justice and International Law; those who work for it are traitors to their cause, the Institution itself is an insult to every fibre of civilisation and a knife in the back of the notion that the law prevails and is applied without bias. Death smell of a different kind!
Dr. Tilak Fernando
Sri Lanka experienced a ghastly time during the terrorist conflict where death smell was in the air incessantly. When we were children, the very sound of a ‘death’ or a ‘funeral’ brought apprehension and fear amongst people. Such shockability which became diluted with JVP murders, finally accelerated to an unprecedented level due to mass butchery by the LTTE. So much so, the word ‘death’ seemingly benumbed the human feelings to an extent that the revulsion too diminished whilst the most fearsome word at one time transformed into something inconsequential. There are no more terrorist killings in... -Full Story-

The Real Reason for NATO Attacking Libya EXPOSED

If Libya threatens to become a no-win for NATO, for China and Russia it’s a win-win
US Admiral Samuel Locklear, NATO’s joint operations chief in Naples, is not a man who minces his words when defining his mission in Libya. It also raises questions about the effectiveness of military force and whether foreign intervention is the right response to brutal crackdowns by autocratic leaders on demonstrators demanding greater political reform... -Full Story-

Notes on Buddhist Journalism—3-It’s another genre of journalism, not a replacement of current
By Shelton A. Gunaratne© 2011 Professor of mass communications emeritus at Minnesota State University Moorhead
Shyamon Jayasinghe is not following the path of right speech when he denigrates me from his high intellectual pedestal (somewhere in Australia) wherefrom he shouts,  "This Shelton guy  ... likes to revel in his confusion." The quality of the debate diminishes when a participant uses language intended to demean another. I have already pointed out that Buddhist Journalism is not necessarily a religious journalism because Buddhism is strictly speaking NOT a religion, but a philosophy or lifestyle to overcome the troubles (dukkha) we encounter as sentient beings. Sri Lanka's Killing Fields
 Ira de Silva London, Canada
The Editor The Guardian U.K.   Dear Sir:   I have just read your article of June 15,2011 re the documentary by Ch.4 titled Sri Lanka's Killing Fields and decided to write to you as it illustrates the very superficial knowledge of western journalists regarding the situation in Sri Lanka and about the terrorism that plagued the country for thirty years.   The writer states that the footage  "which documented the summary executions, rape, torture and bombing - all apparently sanctioned by the Sri Lankan government - of tens of thousands of Tamils in the... -Full Story-

This refers to his  submission "CRICKET AND THE KILLING FIELDS"  presented on the SPIN page of the UK Guardian where the term "killing fields "once again seems to have surfaced with a coincidental connotation of British meddling into Sri Lankan affairs which the Brits including their at times ignominious BBC seem to revel in... -Full Story-

Legal background to NATO war crimes
NATO is committing war crimes in Libya. The rules of engagement are bound by the UN Security Council Resolutions 1970 and 1973 (2011) in which there is no mention of taking out Colonel Gaddafi, his aides or his children or grandchildren. NATO was supposed to police a no-fly zone and explain any misgivings to the international community. The People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation asked the countries proposing the above-mentioned Resolutions to explain the details of the "measures" inherent in the agreements. No explanations were given, making the basis for the Resolutions void.... -Full Story- ( - 23/06/11)

Farrakhan: The White Man Made Obama Bomb Libya

Creators Syndicate – The White Man made him do it. Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan recently unmasked the reason for President Barack Obama's unpopular, non-congressionally authorized, War Powers Resolution-violating decision to bomb Libya, a country that poses no imminent threat to the United States. "We voted for our brother, Barack," said Farrakhan, "a beautiful human being with a sweet heart, and now he's an assassin. They've turned him into them." Attacking Libya—and the Dictionary
If Americans don’t get hurt, war is no longer war. — By Jonathan Schell
The Obama administration has come up with a remarkable justification for going to war against Libya without the congressional approval required by the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution of 1973. American planes are taking off, they are entering Libyan air space, they are locating targets, they are dropping bombs, and the bombs are killing and injuring people and destroying things. It is war. Some say it is a good war and some say it is a bad war, but surely it is a war.... -Full Story-

As China flexes its economic and military muscle, it's bumping elbows with Asia's other big and fast-growing power: India. China's hunger for energy from the Middle East and resources from Africa brings it into the Indian Ocean. And some defense analysts in India are watching uneasily as China develops commercial ports in some of India's neighbor countries. Reflections on that Channel 4 ‘documentary’
Malinda Seneviratne-Courtesy The Nation
The most Channel 4 ‘revelation’ about the ‘last days of the war’ (i.e. the military moves to annihilate the LTTE and rescue hundreds of thousands of people being held hostage by that ruthless terrorist organisation) makes some serious claims of excess by the Sri Lankan security forces. The allegation is that the Government of Sri Lanka sanctioned executions, atrocities and shelling of civilians. The documentary also blames the LTTE for using civilians as human shields. That last part of course is nothing more than tokenism. All those who have accused the Government of Sri Lanka... -Full Story-

What's it costing British taxpayers to bomb Libya?
Ian Katz
The UK government has shrouded the financial cost of bombing Gaddafi in secrecy and obfuscation This weekend provided sobering reminders of the human and financial cost of the three-month bombing campaign against Muammar Gaddafi's regime: in Tripoli several civilians appeared to have been killed by a Nato strike; while in London the Treasury chief secretary, Danny Alexander, admitted that the bill for Britain's contribution could run to "hundreds of millions of pounds". Until now the UK government has shrouded the issue of how much taxpayers are spending on bombing Libya in the sort of secrecy and obfuscation... -Full Story-

THE NATIONALIST PAPERS - Sophomoric devolutionists need to graduate
by Malinda Seneviratne-Courtesy The Island
Devolution proposals that do not take into account history, demography, geography, political efficacy (i.e. whether or not it leads to ruptures that bleed to violence) and economic rationality are essentially the work of either rabid chauvinists intent on land-theft and self-aggrandizement or the intellectually slothful. Devolution is stumped by history. The ‘traditional homeland’ claim remains unsubstantiated. Indeed, the historical record rebels against it. The fact that a ten-mile wide strip on the coast was ceded to the Dutch East India Company on February 14, 1766, Kirthi Sri Rajasinha and that the Dutch thereafter settled... -Full Story-

Notes on Buddhist Journalism—1-Aim is to reduce suffering through Middle Path norms

In a recent blog discussion on the Buddhist approach to journalism (BJ), I chided the namarupa bearing the funny label D. I reiterated my explanation of BJ in summary form:  BJ is not the reporting of Buddhist events, although it can include them. BJ is based on the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path... -Full Story-

The Libyan War, American Power and the Decline of the Petrodollar System

The present NATO campaign against Gaddafi in Libya has given rise to great confusion, both among those waging this ineffective campaign, and among those observing it. Many whose opinions I normally respect see this as a necessary war against a villain – though some choose to see Gaddafi as the villain, and others point to Obama. My own take on this war, on the other hand, is that it is both ill-conceived and dangerous -- a threat to the interests of Libyans, Americans, the Middle East and conceivably the entire world. UK Channel 4, fools a naive home audience with low grade TV Programmes with faked films, and Discredits a Sovereign States for a « fistful of Dollars ».

UK Channel  takes up controversial issues and projects them to suit their pre-planed object and in doing so it  does not stop short of  showing the factual information, but goes beyond  to falsify the information to fit into their planned intention.  It was what they did with the documentary it presented in its TV Channel  on «  jihadist preachers in mosques » called the Undercover Mosque.  The West Midland Police in UK  reported the Channel 4 to industry regulator Ofcom over the way an undercover programme was edited. Government Response Insufficient to Counter Terrorist Attempts to Lift the EU LTTE Ban
Dilrook Kannangara
Terrorists have hired lawyers to argue their case at the EU Court of Justice. The case has been allowed to proceed and the EU Court is currently hearing it. Lifting the LTTE ban in the EU or otherwise will be decided. Needless to say the outcome will have a critical impact on the nation. However, as usual, the government response has been next to nothing. Surely it is a matter for the EU Court to decide but the LTTE has come a very long way from its criminality over the past 6 years since its ban... -Full Story-

Police Brutality in Sri Lanka
Jay Deshabandu
Another story again about police brutality!  I was terribly shocked when I heard a police man (A real devil) shot and killed a motor cyclist as he did not stop at a police check-point.  It could happen to anyone!  What happened in the Katunayake free trade zone is another tragedy in which police took the laws on to their hands to shoot unarmed civilians who were just bystanders. Many of them lost their arms or legs and some of them got crippled for life! One person died. Apparently,  police was either following orders or did not know how to... -Full Story-

The future is solar powered cookers
Many things change with time, economically, politically, socially, scientifically and in many other ways. We had a battery operated radio that is no smaller than a present television, we never had a home telephone, a fridge and many more things commonly found today in an average Sri Lankan home. My dad was a doctor of medicine but never had many new gadgets, in some rural hospitals where he worked, not even electricity. The very brief intervention of the Defense Attaché to the US Embassy in Colombo, Lt. Early plans afoot to stop Obama sequel

Republican voters are holding primary elections** in 50 states to pick a nominee to challenge President Obama. The rallying cry heard everywhere is “foil the Obama sequel.” Perhaps, this longest of any campaigns found elsewhere on planet earth, has produced a legion of well-paid strategists working diligently to send the incumbent president home in 2012. Their offices are veritable “war rooms.” Those living outside of the US could perhaps conjure up a multitude of reasons to fault the Nobel Peace Laurite Obama for missed opportunities to bring the world closer, unkempt policy profile and jaundiced view... -Full Story-

Has India's government lost the plot on corruption?
Has the Congress-led government of India lost the plot? Going by the events of the past week, it would appear so. First, in an act which many believe was one of embarrassing pusillanimity, it sent four of its most senior ministers to the airport to receive and talk with yoga guru Baba Ramdev when he arrived in Delhi to begin his anti-corruption hunger strike. Things fell apart quickly and soon, a senior Congress functionary was openly calling the yoga guru a "a thug".
