Agreement signed to extend India’s $1bn credit line for Sri Lanka
The signing of the agreement to extend the USD$ 1,000 million assistance scheme from India for the import of essential materials for a further period of one year has been carried out today (May 30), says Minister of Finance Shehan Semasinghe. Sri Lanka to revise penalty for overstaying foreigners
The Ministerial Consultative Committee has approved the orders made by the Minister of Public Security under the Immigrants and Emigrants Act to revise the fine of US$500, in addition to the visa fees, to foreigners who have overstayed their period of valid visas. Testing imported dried fish, sprats and fruits for heavy metals made mandatory
The Sri Lankan government has made it mandatory to test imported dried fish, sprats and fruits for heavy metals such as lead and arsenic with effect from June 01, 2023. Food insecurity improved in Sri Lanka but prevails within specific regions – FAO and WFP
Food security in Sri Lanka is improving across all provinces, according to the Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission (CFSAM) report jointly carried out in February/March 2023 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). Aragalaya activist arrested for operating mobile brothel
A mobile brothel operated by an Aragalaya activist has been raided by the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit and seven individuals including four women taken into custody, Police said. Death of a Soldier
The tragic death of Michael McNeil of the Canadian Armed Forces has raised many questions. According to the news reports Warrant Officer Michael McNeil who suffered from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) had committed suicide at the Canadian Forces Base Petawawa in Ontario. He was one of three Canadian soldiers to commit suicide this week. McNeil had a distinguished military career. In a bid to revive the country’s struggling economy, Sri Lanka has implemented a comprehensive economic reforms agenda, the President’s Media Division (PMD) reported. Consumer Affairs Authority uncovers racket overcharging patients for lab tests; nearly Rs. 10 mn fined
Legal action has been taken against 12 private hospitals and laboratories for overcharging patients for both, dengue tests and Full Blood Count (FBC) tests. Accordingly, the 12 institutes were fined a total of Rs. 9.4 million for charging patients prices above those gazette for the relevant tests, a senior investigative official of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), A. Public Opinion Submission for New Anti-Terror Bill
Sri Lanka needs anti-terror and anti-subversion laws. Sadly, the seven decades since Independence are dotted with subversion, violence, disruption and terrorism. Current Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) introduced in 1979 has its use but falls short of many security risks the island faces. Parts of it are outdated. Chinese state-owned firm to build major Sri Lanka port complex
A Chinese state-owned firm said on Monday it plans to take its investment in Sri Lanka to $2 billion by building a major logistics hub. Oversight Committee on National Security condemns blacklisting of Karannagoda
