Why the Vesak was advanced to April?
Mahinda Karunaratne
The Vesak poya falls naturally on the 29th May which by means that the Vesak should be in the month of May according to Julian calendar we follow worldwide. From time and memory there had been no shifting of Vesak (or even Poson) festival. Since the Yahapaalana govt. came in to power, it is taking all decisions and acting on behalf of Tamils and Muslims and persecuting majority Sinhelaya and destroying and attacking Buddhism. (While the Temples, places of worship and Historical sites being destroyed and bulldozed by Tamils and Muslims,) yet the Yahapaalana govt. asks Sinhela... -Full Story-

Removing Tamil Tigers from Terrorist List
Ira de Silva Ontario, Canada
Mr. Jack MacLaren MPP, Carleton-Mississippi Mills, Queens Park Ontario.  Dear Sir:  I have just watched the video of your statement in the legislature at Queens Park and read a comment in the Toronto Sun of April 12,2018 bylined Bonokoski in which he sums up your attitude as "naive, foolish thinking". My question to you is, who provided you with the information on which you based your statement and what you hope to achieve. Are you a secret admirer of terrorists and terrorism?   It is well documented that members of all political parties in Canada... -Full Story-

Tushar Ranjan Mohanty Research Associate, Institute for Conflict Management
At least two members of the Christian community, Rashid Khalid and Azhar Iqbal, were killed and another five were injured in a firing incident near a church in the Essa Nagri area of Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, on April 15, 2018. Quetta’s Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Abdur Razzaq Cheema, stated that the incident occurred when worshippers were leaving after attending the Sunday service at the church. Islamic State (IS, also Daesh) claimed responsibility for the attack through the Amaq ‘news agency’, its propaganda wing. On April 2,... -Full Story-

What Naseby actually told President
RAJEEWA JAYAWEERA Courtesy The Island
According to media reports, President Sirisena met with British Peer Lord Naseby during his visit to the UK to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). A long-standing friend of Sri Lanka with an involvement of over 50 years, he started the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Sri Lanka in 1975 and is currently its President. Naseby managed to obtain 39 pages of confidential dispatches by Lt. Col. Anton Gash, Defense Attaché at the British High Commission in Colombo in 2009, during the final stages of the Vanni campaign. He received the documents, albeit in... -Full Story-

‘Error of the moon’?
Editorial Courtesy The Island
April 24, 2018, 12:00 pm Winston Churchill famously dubbed Russia a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. How would one describe Sri Lanka, under the yahapalana government? One may call it a tangle, wrapped in a jumble, inside a muddle. Anything King Midas touched got transmuted into solid gold, we are told. The present-day Sri Lankan leaders also have a magical touch of sorts. Anything they lay their hands on turns into an unholy mess, instantly. They have a remarkable ability to bring chaos out of order. The economy is in total disarray. The... -Full Story-

The Opposition’s 20-A dilemmas
By Dr. DAYAN JAYATILLEKA Courtesy The Island
It’s the arithmetic, stupid! A no-confidence motion against the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Sampanthan, is logical and legitimate, neither because he is a Tamil nationalist nor because he propped up Ranil in the no-faith motion on the bond scam, but because he, unlike his TULF predecessor in the same post, Mr. A. Amirthalingam, by no means, commands the largest number of seats in the Opposition benches, while Mahinda Rajapaksa does. Talk to anybody on the street. Listen to anybody in the agora, the public space/s. Citizens talk to me because they recognize... -Full Story-

Where have all the suspects gone- Far, Far, away!!!

1. Do we hear loud whispers asking where have all the suspects gone? Far, far away we are told!!! Should we ask why??? Arjuna Mahendran was last known to have been in Singapore, Udayanga in Dubai, Jaliya only the good Lord knows!!! We’ll definitely need to keep an eye on that since it was the director of the National Eye Hospital who gave him the green light saying that the surgery could not be performed in our island home!!! WHAT’S NEXT & WHO’S NEXT AFTER YAHAPALANAYA?
By Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka Courtesy The Daily Mirror
“Ecrasez l’infame!”—“Crush the loathsome thing!” - Voltaire   Neoliberalism is almost dead in Sri Lanka, and its Government is dying. The choice that is before us is which type/variety of Populism:Right, Left, Centre or Centre-Left? Even if the JVP’s 20th amendment is supported by the UNP, TNA and misguided/manipulated SLPP pundits, the people will defeat it at a Referendum because (i) they are looking for a chance to reject the Government and the Establishment (ii) the mood is for a strong state, not a weakened one (iii) the ‘NO’ campaign will be led... -Full Story-

What MR got right and this Govt. could not!
By Ranga Jayasuriya Courtesy The Daily Mirror
Reading the Sunday newspapers, I stumbled upon two stories. One was about ‘resettlement experts’ making a hue and cry that the third phase of Central Expressway would cause mass displacement. “From a people’s point of view, we are heading for disaster,” one complains. According to the statistics cited, 6,432 people from 1,742 families would be affected. There are 624 people living in the road corridor; 2,098 agricultural landowners; and 25 entrepreneurs. The second is a report that the US Congress has allocated US$ 35 million for Sri Lanka for FY 2018, subjective... -Full Story-

Addressing a news conference, he said premier Wickremesinghe anticipated centralizing executive powers unto his purview by making use of the abolishment of the executive presidency. “It is obvious that the Prime Minister is acting according to the agendas of the foreign countries. Scarcity of funds: Bond market likely to collapse, says Bandula
Sheain Fernandopulle Courtesy The Daily Mirror
While claiming that the Central Bank of Sri Lanka lacked sufficient funds to pay back the Treasury bonds and bills before their date of expiry, MP Bandula Gunawardana said the bond market could collapse due to the prevailing situation. Addressing a news briefing, he said the government needs to pay back the funds of the Treasury bonds and bills before the date of termination and that they were short of funds to do so. “It is with responsibility that I say the Central Bank doesn’t possess sufficient funds to pay back the Treasury bonds... -Full Story-

The March of Folly Destroying Continuity
By Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha Courtesy Ceylon Today
When I served on the National Human Resources Development Council, I chaired a committee to recommend new ways of working in the public sector. We looked at several issues, but amongst them one that resonated with the Organization of Professional Associations, whom I was asked to meet to take the recommendations forward, was mechanisms to ensure continuity with regard to public institutions. This was stressed with regard to Secretaries to Ministries, who are now changed with a change of government, but we also felt a similar principle should apply for all organizations... -Full Story-

Sri Lanka slams reports of Chinese militarization of Hambantota Port
By Editor  Courtesy NewsIn.Asia
Colombo, April 23 (newsin.asia) – Sri Lankan Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, has strongly denied reports of Chinese militarization of the Chinese funded Hambantota Port, in southern Sri Lanka, and stressed the Sri Lankan Navy was the sole military force responsible for the security of the Port. During discussions with China’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Cheng Xueyuan, Wickremesinghe said some foreign media irresponsibly hyped the question of militarization of the Hambantota Port out of their own hidden agenda, but time would eventually prove that the Hambantota Port was destined to embrace a prosperous and bright future in business.... -Full Story-

On the night that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe won the no-confidence motion in Parliament (April 5, 2018) three separate but interconnected incidents occurred, within stone’s throw of each other: 1. he held a thanksgiving pooja to the deities at Gangaramaya Temple for saving his  job which was on the line that day; 2. at the Head Office of the MTV station, which is within earshot of Gangaramaya, a mob led by UNP thugs threw stones, lit crackers, and threatened the media staff in an obvious attempt to teach a lesson to MTV which had persistently... -Full Story-

The Evidence: How lies – Fake Videos – PR stunts – Child Actors justify military interventions of sovereign nations
Countries have fallen. People have lost lives & homes. Countries are destabilized, split to pieces, locals are armed, locals are roped in as poodles, regime change & system change are all part of a neo-colonial liberal agenda that seeks to destroy the sovereign state system & bring corporate rule to the hands of a miniscule. This agenda has been rolled out a well-planned, well-coordinated, well-funded set of initiatives of which manufactured stories, news, fake videos, false eye witnesses, staged scenes, bogus NGOs, bought over locals and now even child actors are playing a role. By Chandre Dharmawardana, Canada
[A shorter version of this article appeared in the Daily News:  http://www.dailynews.lk/2018/04/19/features/148615/glyphosate-ban-has-gmoa-studied-research] In a press conference held on 11th April,  the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) stated that fresh laws should be introduced to take “stern action” against people involved in smuggling in such “harmful chemicals” like glyphosate. The GMOA considers  glyphosate to be “harmful” because it allegedly  causes cancer and kidney disease. However, just last November, the world's largest study on the health effects of glyphosate covering over  nearly a quarter century (23 years)  and  involving 90,000 people, found NO harmful effects even on... -Full Story-

WAR CRIMES’ AND EELAM WAR IV (Part 1)
KAMALIKA PIERIS
The   “war crimes” charge against the Sri Lanka army is that the army killed hundreds and hundreds of   “innocent” Tamil civilians instead of killing off the LTTE. This ‘war crimes’ charge is part of a calculated strategy carried out by the western countries that support Tamil Eelam. A bogus ‘body count’ was created at the end of Eelam War IV. The first estimate was 20,000 civilians killed. The Paranagama Commission reported    that   ‘privately UN staff were puzzled by the new death toll, then alleged to be 20,000 and wondered how it had been calculated. UN staff were... -Full Story-

SLPP should become Sri Lanka’s leading political party.
By : A.A.M.NIZAM – MATARA.
Despite dismissal by some silly quisling politicians as a never winning and politically suicide effort the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) the nascent political party of Sri Lanka made a tremendous and historical victory in the February 10th local government elections beating all traditional political parties and becoming first in the majority of local government Institutions in the country.  Its victory was a surprise to many partisan political commentators to warn the neo-liberal reactionary UNP to take even undemocratic actions to suppress the forward march of the SLPP.  The Pohottuwa has been the... -Full Story-

EXECUTIVE PRESIDENCY MUST REMAIN AND BE FURTHER STRENGTHENED - JVP A PROXY OF UNP AND LTTE
By M D P DISSANAYAKE
Having a President like Maithreepala Sirisena cannot be a sound argument to do away with the Presidency.   That selection  was a cardinal mistake. Sobhitha talked about the Constitution, like a Tyre with 17 patches.  Now he is no more.  Now we have the same Tyre with 19 patches. JVP want to add another.  This motion by JVP is  a virtual contractual arrangement with the group of UNP, SLMC, JVP, TNA  and all anti Sri Lankan forces to abolish Presidency.  The Executive Presidency should not be abolished as a punishment to President Maithreepala Sirisena.  Restricting... -Full Story-

Evidence regarding glyphosate use and the incidence of kidney diseases
Usvatte-aratchi Courtesy The Island
April 22, 2018, 10:14 pm It is progress that scientists, including two eminent physicians, have taken up, again, the case against glyphosate. Bhikkhusangha taken in general, and Bhikkhu Ratana in particular, do not have the tool kit which qualifies them to make decisions in these matters. Earlier, certain other scientists had taken up the case for glyphosate. Somethings belong mostly in religion and others mostly in natural philosophy, the circles intersecting each other only in the higher regions. The present case for and against glyphosate, the way I recall it, rests on epidemiological studies. Glyphosate has... -Full Story-

Exposing fake witnesses in Iraq & Sri Lanka: Nayirah & Vany Kumar
The intervention in Syria has become an eye opener as a string of lies, fake videos, images, recruitment of child artists & PR firms have exposed the lies that have gone into justifying military intervention by the West & UN action thereafter. A girl crying before Congress claiming she witnesses Iraqi soldiers remove babies from incubators justified the invasion of Iraq. Channel 4’s star witness was Vany Kumar who had arrived from London to the Vanni and her accounts of blood being mixed with water & given to dying Tamil civilians together with a series of documentaries titled “Killing Fields”... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 22/04/18)

Unseating Sambandan: This ploy could backfire on JO itself.  This will further alienate JO from the Tamil community.  The TNA will use such a move to obtain the local  and international attention in their favour, blowing out of proportion a rapid protest campaign justifying TNA’s long held view that Prez Mahinda Rajapakse is against Tamils and minorities.    Such NCM will be defeated in the Parliament, with the support of UNP, SLFP, JVP, TNA, SLMC etc. Grabbing Opposition Leader’s Role: Even if JO wins the NCM,  there will be no guarantee that it will... -Full Story-

Rickety yahapalana bus chugs along… Will Sirisena drive towards anarchy or safety?
By Arjuna Ranawana Courtesy Ceylon Today
A popular expression in North America is “Who is driving the bus?”, it means who is in charge? Most of us travel by bus and they are the bane of our lives. The private buses competing with each other for passengers, stopping everywhere to pick up people, but refusing to stop for them to get off are universally hated, but it is something we have to put up with.  Buses being so much a part of our lives, I thought it would be good to use the bus analogy to describe the politics of... -Full Story-

Maithri’s breather

The prorogation of Parliament, which came as a bolt from the blue, has left many bewildered. Everybody seems to be wondering what is there up President Maithripala Sirisena’s sleeve. Our contention is that there is nothing up there. The prorogation of Parliament is only a desperate measure the President, stuck neck deep in trouble, has adopted to give himself a breather. The Sri Lankan government turned a blind eye to the anti-Muslim riot, possibly believing this would solve the ruling party’s internal problems  During the “Black July” of 1983, thousands of Tamils were ruthlessly murdered by government-led mobs and Sinhala volunteers. Due to the backlash from the international community, the Sri Lankan government, since then, has tried to keep a check on large-scale ethnic clashes. As a result, relative peace has prevailed. However, in 2014, the Aluthgama riot happened. A couple of Muslims were killed by Sinhala mobs. Since the Mahinda Rajapaksa family in... -Full Story-

A prelude to polls postponement
Editorial Courtesy The Island
April 11, 2018, 10:07 pm It looks as if the government were all out to put off the Provincial Council (PC) polls again owing to its seemingly intractable problems, both internal and external. The unfolding drama in the yahapalana camp is like the political version of the Night of the Long Knives. The UNP is all out to purge what is known as the ‘unity’ government of the SLFP ministers who voted for the no-faith motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe the other day. A perfect storm
Editorial Courtesy The Island
April 10, 2018, 9:28 pm The Joint Opposition (JO) is bragging that it has caused extensive damage to the yahapalana government with its no-faith motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Its ill-conceived move to oust the PM was born out of pure political adventurism. The abortive attempt has, however, yielded some results the JO did not bargain for. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe, out of sheer desperation to defeat the no-confidence motion, enlisted the backing of the TNA on ten conditions, some of which he must be regretting now. He also undertook to restructure the party. But, introducing... -Full Story-

The Human Mind
Dr Ruwan M Jayatunge
There is a popular notion that states - As humans we live in our Minds.  Mind has been variously defined as that which is responsible for one's thoughts and feelings, the seat of the faculty of reason or the aspect of intellect and consciousness experienced as combinations of thought, perception, memory, emotion, will and imagination, including all unconscious cognitive processes ( Pandya, 2011).  The mind is the organized totality of an organism's mental and psychological processes, conscious and unconscious. According to Krishnamoorthy (2009) the mind is a virtual entity, one that reflects the workings of the neural... -Full Story-

An extract from the final Chapter of the Book ' Malabar and the Portuguese' by K.M. Panikkar
K. M. PANIKKAR
"An influential school of history holds that the benefits, that India has received from the direct contact with Europe, are of such a nature that, in spite of all their faults, the Portuguese should be considered as the pioneers of civilisation and as the forerunners of the British Empire. It may be permitted however, to ques- tion the correctness of the point of view, wrongly called historical, which thus tries to import retrospective values into events of an earlier date. Even accepting that the connection with Europe has been beneficial to India, it is open to doubt whether a century and a half... -Full Story-

MIEE  Australia Since 2015, people of SriLanka have perceived that the democracy that triumphed from 2004 to 2015 has weakened & shrunken as a result of a few politicians, taking the law into their own hand as if the country is their own, not being patriotic. However, it may not end the prevailing political uncertainty as the three-way competition among President Maithripala Sirisena, Mr. Wickremesinghe and their common rival, former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, is likely to continue. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremsinghe has given his consent to ten conditions proposed by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), to apparently please the Tamil Diaspora, former MP and retired Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera alleged yesterday. He told the Daily Mirror that one of the main conditions was to draft a new constitution which would make Sri Lanka a federal State. “The tactics of the PM would divide the country and Mr. Wickremesinghe is betraying the country by giving priority to condition put forward by the TNA. It became evident how strong the relationship between the... -Full Story-

PM instructs to withdraw no-confidence against SLFP ministers
By Yusuf Ariff  Courtesy Adaderana
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has informed the UNP MPs to withdraw the no-confidence motion against the SLFP Ministers who voted in favour of the NCM against him. Wickremesinghe has stated that the No-confidence motions handed over by the backbencher UNP MPs was not a decision of the UNP but the views of a few MPs. Accordingly the Prime Minister, in his capacity as the leader of the UNP, while noting that any decision regarding a No-Confidence motion must be taken at a UNP parliamentary group meeting, has instructed the UNP backbencher parliamentarians to... -Full Story-

NCM against PM Ranil W, defeated in Parliament, but not amoung the people.
By Charles.S.Perera
President Sirisena as well as his Prime Ministers  are bound together like Siamese twins. One cannot leave the other. They have come to live together and die together. They are thus handicapped,  unable to do any good to Sri Lanka and its people,  other than helping each other to continue their survival bound together as Siamese Twins.. The Bond Scam was planned after January,8th 2015, and each one of them-Prime Minister and President , knew what they were doing. Launch street battles to save the country from foreign domination
By : A.A.M.NIZAM - MATARA
The No Confidence Motion against Ranil Wickremasinghe taught a convincing lesson to the Joint Opposition and the people of this country that the present parliament in Sri Lanka is comprised with a bunch of shameless quislings devoid of self respect, political and democratic principles, slavish to pecuniary benefits and enslaved to foreign powers. It convinced that these quislings will blatantly intensify their anti national foreign imposed agenda of fulfilling UNHRC proposals, imposing a new constitution, sale of state properties and natural resources, action against gallant war heroes, and facilitating the hegemonic India, Singapore and... -Full Story-

LTTE Treaty Allies Saved Ranil: UNP’s Last Hurrah

Interestingly, Ranil was saved by LTTE Treaty allies! In February 2002 various political parties signed Memorandum of Understanding each with the LTTE. First to sign a MOU with the LTTE was the UNP led by Ranil on February 22, 2002 just before signing the infamous and illegal CFA on the same day. NO CONFIDENCE MOTION- THE WINNER IS  PREZ. MAITHREEPALA SIRISENA!
By M D P DISSANAYAKE
Even before the vote was taken, those who listened to Mr Wimal Weerawansa's speech  undoubtedly came to the conclusion that the Prime Minister will win the battle.  Anura Kumara's speech was totally confusing, whilst supporting the motion, as a face saving strategy, he was reading JVP's own list of complaints against Mr Nandasena Gotabaya Rajapakse, instead of Mr Ranil Wickremasinghe.  Anura Kumara is a political discard. Who won the battle of the no-confidence motion? There were a two winners, not one. One of them won tactically and the other strategically. There were also many losers. At the most obvious level, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe won. His party, or at least its parliamentary group and working committee rallied solidly behind him. The dissidents were silenced or fell silent. Ranil Wickremesinghe has homogenized his party at its upper levels. April 5, 2018, 12:00 pm The Joint Opposition (JO) suffered a painful pratfall on Wednesday night, when Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe defeated its no-confidence motion. The UNP, however, in spite of its rhetoric and braggadocio, did not expect a comfortable win with a majority of 46. Its desperation knew no bounds. Else, it wouldn’t have gone to the extent of securing the TNA’s support, which has come with strings attached. The niece of Sergei Skripal referred to the Salisbury pizzeria after visiting which her uncle and his daughter had been found by policemen after the March 4 incident. She pointed out that the two allegedly ordered fugu fish — quite a surprising suggestion as this dish is part of Japanese cuisine, and should be carefully prepared to avoid a lethal poisoning. MYANMAR AND ROHINGYA MUSLIMS
 Dr. Daya Hewapathirane
The Rohingya Muslim community in Myanmar are not indigenous to Myanmar. Most of these Rohingya Muslims are illicit immigrants who have illegally migrated to Myanmar starting in the British colonial period, from Muslim neighborhood regions of Bengal India. Later they continued to migrate from East Pakistan (present Bangladesh). Being illicit immigrants, the Myanmar governments of the past and present and the public of Myanmar do not consider Rohingya Muslims as legitimate citizens of Myanmar. Myanmar's Muslims account for about 04% of the total Myanmar population of about 60 million. They live mostly in Myanmar's western state... -Full Story-

D-day in Parliament
By Dr. DAYAN JAYATILLEKA Courtesy The Island
It is a simple matter of ethics. If Prime Minister Wickremesinghe hasn’t resigned, it is quite simply because, firstly, he doesn’t know right from wrong and secondly, he doesn’t know how to conduct himself in public affairs in accordance with international norms, including those in Asia and the global South. He doesn’t think it was wrong to import and implant Arjuna Mahendran, a non-citizen, as Governor of the Central Bank despite the advice of the President and a clear issue of a conflict of interest. He doesn’t see it as wrong that he... -Full Story-

A Right Royal battle
Editorial Courtesy The Island
What started off as an ill-conceived no-confidence motion, initiated by a bunch of cocky Joint Opposition (JO) MPs following their impressive win at the Feb. 10 mini polls, has led to a right royal battle between President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The showdown is right Royal because the President and the Prime Minister are both Royalists—the former from Royal College, Polonnaruwa and the latter from Royal College, Colombo 07. The battle lines are now drawn and there is no turning back. Both sides are evenly matched, in our book. A lot of... -Full Story-

Game of Loans: How China Bought Hambantota
CSIS Briefs Courtesy Center for Strategic and International Studies
The Issue Unable to repay its debt, Sri Lanka gave China a controlling equity stake and a 99-year lease for Hambantota port, which it handed over in December 2017. The economic rationale for Hambantota is weak, given existing capacity and expansion plans at Colombo port, fueling concerns that it could become a Chinese naval facility. Recommendations Recipient countries should link infrastructure projects to broader development strategies that assess projects within larger networks and monitor overall debt levels. The international community should expand alternatives to Chinese infrastructure financing but cannot and should not... -Full Story-

Sri Lanka's PM faces tight confidence vote as key ally plans to defect
COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe faces a no- confidence motion on Wednesday that could go down to the wire and lead to political instability in the island nation, even if the government manages to scrape a win. Wickremesinghe leads a national unity government in alliance with President Maithripala Sirisena’s party, which has said it would vote against the prime minister, blaming him for failing to prevent an alleged scam in the bond market. The opposition, which swept local elections last month, aims to drive a deeper wedge within the ruling coalition with the no-confidence motion and... -Full Story- (LankaWeb - 03/04/18)

Usually the “official opposition´ is the largest party sitting in the opposition side of the parliament. However, against the will of the people, TNA, only with 16 members of the parliament was appointed as the opposition after the August 2015 general election. In one sense, it was a reason for everyone to feel happy as it was great recognition for a party (or parties) representing the Tamil people who suffered the most during the thirty-year-old war against the terrorism.
