Ranil – a brain-dead discard in UNP morgue
H. L. D. Mahindapala
The news item in your newspaper (28/12) that ex-president Chandrika Kumaratunga has been picked by the UNP to contest President Mahinda Rajapakse in the next election was predictable. At best she is the only candidate that has a chance of not winning but uniting the opposition. Her own party that made  her a leading political figure has thrown her out. Now she is leaning on the UNP, the largest party in the opposition, to stage a comeback, if that is ever possible. Her depending on the UNP to take her to the peak of power... -Full Story-

Abolition of Vth STD Scholarship Examination A layman’s point of view
Dr Sudath Gunasekara (SLAS) former Ministry Secretary (Also Secretary Ministry of Technical Education) and President Mahanuwara Senior Citizens Movement
1.1.2014. Abolition of Vth STD Scholarship Examination is a crime against 80 % of the population in this country and it is a conspiracy to confine higher education to families of politicians and the affluent. I am not a Vth STD scholar; but still remains as a proud product of the Central School system. As a direct beneficiary of that system I see the decision to abolish the Vth STD scholarship examination as a political conspiracy hatched by lackey officials... -Full Story-

How to sue the United Nations
By:  Dharshan Weerasekera
There has been renewed interest in a paper of mine published in Foreign Policy Journal in March 2013, titled, “The Illegality of UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon’s approach to Sri Lanka,”[1] (see Shenali Waduge, “Dharshan Weerasekera exposes Sri Lanka’s External Affairs Ministry’s deficient legal work,” Lankaweb, 29 Nov. 2013).  In that paper I argued that the Secretary General exceeded his authority in commissioning the Report of the Panel of Experts on Accountability in Sri Lanka, which report subsequently served as the basis for two resolutions passed against this country at the United Nations Human Rights... -Full Story-

Saudi Funded Terrorists Carry-out Heinous Attacks on Russian Civilians
- Kumar Moses
Saudi Arabia had its plans to subjugate Syria and expand its hegemonic presence in the Middle East. However, they collapsed when Russia brokered a peace deal backed by warships and nuclear submarines in the Mediterranean. Arabian leaders offered several bribes to the Russians but failed to implement their evil plan. Powerful Prince Bandar, head of Saudi intelligence, then threatened the Russian President to disrupt Sochi Winter Olympics. In his own words to President Putin Prince Bandar said, “I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics next year. The Chechen groups that threaten the... -Full Story-

Twin bombings at Volgograd
Dr. Chula Rajapakse MNZM  Spokesperson, United Sri Lanka Assn,
Dear Editor, The Age  Melbourne, Australia. The agony of the victims & families of the twin suicide bombings in Volgograd Russia, can be best appreciated by the likes of us of Sri Lankan origin, who had to endure these and much worse for three decades. The irony is that the reward the British Prime minister bestowed on the Sri Lankan President for  putting an end to this carnage in may 2009,  is to threaten to haul him & his country before the UNHRC in March 2014... -Full Story-

Why does Everybody Hate Sri Lanka?
by padraigcolman
A Facebook friend asked me to explain why the Sri Lankan government has come under such criticism. A recent example was David Cameron’s November 2013 visit to Sri Lanka for CHOGM (Commonwealth Heads of government Meeting). “Can you tell me why you think the country is coming in for criticism? Did the Tamil Tigers manage to get favourable international media coverage? Can you fill me in a little on how they were defeated and why Sri Lanka gets criticised for that?” I have written about this in the past and, after receiving that question, canvassed the views... -Full Story-

Have Sri Lankan Journalists turned into Scribes of Prostitution?

Before Christmas I contacted two Sri Lankan journalists through a reliable local contact to ascertain the acceptability of an article for publication.   I was astonished to receive a response, "Journalists don't publish articles for free anymore. Even my friends ask for US$1000 (one lakh) sometimes to publish business ones. The Endgame.
By Charles.S.Perera
For thirty long years the people of  Sri Lanka suffered .  The people of Sri Lanka suffered as the Tamil Community in Sri Lanka refused  coexistence with the other communities, specially with the Sinhala Majority Community. The Tamil Community wanted to be different.  Because of their desire to be different  Sri Lanka  was made to suffer.  India profiting from this situation trained a group of Tamil youth to take up arms against the Sinhala and Muslim Communities, and terrorise the country.  India desired from this a separation of a part of Sri Lanka as a Eelam State,... -Full Story-

Florence-on-the-Elbe, they used to call the historic German city of Dresden, before it began to turn to ash that evening in February 1945. Inside of days, the United Kingdom and the United States bomber command dropped some 3,900 tonnes of ordnance over the city, creating an inferno which would claim an estimated 25,000 lives. The military utility of the slaughter is still debated by historians: proponents claim it destroyed key Nazi communication hubs, and broke the will of Germans to resist; opponents say it was vengeance, plain and simple. “There is nothing intelligent... -Full Story-

When and why high-profile investigations fail An expose on the Lalith Athulathmudali assassination probe
By Tassie Seneviratne
Many a police investigation in high profile cases in Sri Lanka has failed due to high profile interference. As often happens in such cases, the head of state, the Inspector General of Police, and other powerful personalities take it upon themselves to direct investigations. The unfortunate feature then is the lack of professionalism, and how the investigations change course. Instead of starting the investigation from the scene of crime and finding admissible evidence that point to the culprits, the investigations start from a presumed accused and then look for clues to connect them to the crimes.... -Full Story-

Lessons to be learnt from Mandela’s nationalism -Part II
H. L. D. Mahindapala
Nelson Mandela triumphed gloriously by tapping into S. African nationalism – the indelible political force still alive in global politics despite the theoreticians pooh-poohing nationalism as something of the past. When President Barack Obama says “God Bless America” he is expressing patriotism at the highest divine and terrestrial levels. When David Cameron sings “God Save the Queen” he is glorifying his Queen and his country which, incidentally, stands, in essence, only for the Westernized-Anglo-Saxon-Protestant (WASP) ideology.  In  subtle but over-determining ways White-Christian supremacy reigns supreme in the West. While tolerating non-white minorities under liberal principles... -Full Story-

All shades of political opinion have rushed to claim the legacy of Nelson Mandela after his death than when he was alive. All of them hope that some of the saintly shine that glorifies Mandela will rub on them. In a sense, these claims by diverse actors in the political spectrum indicate that Mandela has suddenly become relevant to Sri Lankan politics. Eastern philosophies, particularly Buddhism, have caught the attention of the American public even though the U.S. mass media have failed to highlight this processual development. Although some might construe Buddhism as an Oriental intrusion intended to discombobulate the predominantly Judeo-Christian culture of the Occident, those who revere the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution are most likely to appreciate the contribution that Buddhism could make to remove the mental fetters that have caused much agony and discontentment (dukkha) among people living in a society driven by excessive materialism. Where is the human compassion for Animals at Christmas
Shenali D Waduge
Except Buddhism and Jainism all other religious festivities are celebrated by denying the life of animals. Buddhists and Jains are the only religions that has festivities without culling animals as sacrifice or for food. Celebrations for Abrahamic religions of Christianity and Islam means to slaughter animals and deny them their right to life so that human beings enjoy their right to rejoice. Thus throughout the year, every celebration has meant millions and millions of animals being slaughtered to be consumed as food. Every moving being has its own right to live in this world equally.  The days are well gone if we think that some animals are ‘created’ for the benefit of the mankind. Those believers can be also categorized as part of cannibals.  The lust for the meat of animals is interpreted in many ways. If any patient is said to consume any animal food, then definitely there is some problem with the practitioner.  The food chain starts from plants. So how come there is no natural medicine for any illness or sickness? The unseen energy or the... -Full Story-

In a Rajapakse almanac, a general or presidential election is an event slotted to a season of festivity – to sync with times of good cheer when the spirits are soaring and money jingles in the pocket with allowances, bonuses and advances. So, 2014 maybe the election year or become the year that leaps to an election in 2015.  Stimulating elections according to a successful doctrine is likely between New Year (April 2014) and Wesak (May 2014) or weighted between Christmas (December 2014) and New Year (April 2015). LIFE ABROAD - Part 58 SURFACING OF CEYLON HISTORY AFTER FIVE DECADES
Dr.Tilak Fernando
Continuing from last week's column (Revival of Sinhala in London), Prof. Lakshman Perera could be regarded as a 'rare flower born to blush unseen' (in the words of poet Thomas Grey) considering the fact that his thesis on The Institutions of Ancient Ceylon, which he produced for his PhD as a post graduate student, was allowed to gather dust for half a century. Lakshman Susantha Perera gained admission at the University College in 1938 and opted to read History for his degree course. The former South African leader, who passed away on December 5th, allegedly received weapons training from Mossad agents in 1962, shortly before his arrest and decades-long imprisonment in South Africa, according to Haaretz. A letter filed away in the Israel State Archives reveals that Mandela, using an alias, approached the Israeli Embassy in Ethiopia in an effort to garner support for the African National Congress’s struggle against South Africa’s all-white rule.... -Full Story-

Jayalalitha as PM Poses an Existential Threat to Sri Lanka
Dilrook Kannangara
A couple of years ago it was only a hypothesis, but now it is a possibility. India goes to polls next year. Congress cannot retain its position of power as recent state elections show. BJP is more likely to win a higher number of seats. If BJP wins but fails to get the numbers, Modi will have to compromise by allowing a small party leader to PM post and Jayalalitha is at the top of the queue. If Congress can amass support from various small parties she still has a very strong chance of becoming Prime Minister.... -Full Story-

Why religion is bad for aging brains
R Chandrasoma
It is now well established that just as limbs and joints must be regularly exercised if they are to remain supple and effective organs of locomotion, the brain must be used and challenged if is to be an efficient organ of mentation in adulthood. Children and young adults do exercise their brains as part of the routines of education that are forced on them by long tradition. There is no comparable tradition for adults - and their ‘mental improvement’ remains largely their own affair. This lackadaisical attitude to adult education has had a severe impact on the... -Full Story-

Removing Year 5 Scholarship Exam from 2016 a National Calamity
Dilrook Kannangara
Students who have done well in Year 5 Scholarship Exam have no vacancy in good schools they deserve to attend. This is because politicians have filled those vacancies with their henchmen’s children. It is a grave injustice not only to deserving students but also to taxpayers who finance the education ministry. However, instead of fixing the problem, the ministry has decided to remove the Year 5 Scholarship Exam altogether! TNA 'rewriting' history of Sri Lanka

There is no doubt that he had been well paid by the LTTE rump to make this statement. Since 2002, he had been a close ally of terrorist leader Prabhakaran. On the advise of the Tamil diaspora and picking up pieces from this statement, the TNA is now making a hue and cry. Can mono-ethnic Jaffna save the Tamils?
By H.L.D. Mahindapala
It is just not possible to make a claim for statehood without first defining its physical borders. It is like making a claim for a piece of land: The claimant must have a deed which defines the boundaries. Consequently, all available evidence, including concoctions, is drawn specifically to outline the borders – real or unreal – as justification for the demand of a new State. This explains why the Vaddukoddians went all out first to concoct geographical borders needed to give some shape and form to their phantom Eelam. This entity called Eelam could not exist... -Full Story-

These wars have been expensive in terms of money, prestige, and deaths and injuries of both US soldiers and the attacked civilian populations. None of these wars appears to have any compelling reason or justifiable explanation. The wars have been important to the profits of the military/security complex. LIFE ABROAD – Part 57 REVIVAL OF SINHALA IN LONDON
Dr. Tilak Fernando
If I were to sieve through all the Sri Lankan personalities I have come across in the UK, over a period of time, Prof. Lakshman Perera comes on top of the list as an intellectual and a patriot. I met this former Professor of History, who was attached to the Colombo University in the eighties, when he was holding the post of Education Officer at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London. Prof. Perera had taken an interest in Sinhala culture and the language from the time he was an undergraduate at Peradeniya University. Having... -Full Story-

India irrelevant to our domestic concerns
Nalin de Silva
The governments should protect the human rights according to the so called political scientists and others in Sri Lanka following their Western counterparts. However, human rights as a concept has evolved in the Western world in protecting the individual from the powers of the governments. As it is the governments which are responsible to protect the human rights of the individuals a problem arises when the rights of the governments are not protected or recognized by the individuals. The concept of human rights in Western culture, as all the other Western concepts formulated within the Greek... -Full Story-

Towards religious harmony
Ranjith Soysa
In view of the several incidents leading to religious disharmony which took place recently the Government should consider to appoint a commission to examine the causes and evolve a system to nip in the bud such unenviable situations. Among the issues which should receive the attention of such an inquiry are : 1 The growth of aggressive and violent religious movements in Sri Lanka. 2  The role played by the foreign organizations in assisting such movements. 3 Dissemination of violent religious contents  in the educational institutions. 4 Unethical religious conversions leading to tensions among religious groups. 5... -Full Story-

TNA lament over Mandela?
Dr Donald Chandraratna Perth Australia
It is ironic that those who paid scant regard for human life at one time are now eulogizing Mandela who was a more of a moral leader than a political leader. This includes those leaders of western societies who were dithering for over thirty years and many centuries prior to that, who let South Africans suffer brutality at the hands of their forebears with impunity. I am in particular bemused by the comments of TNA that remind me, in retrospect, of their moral inadequacy at the time that their sole leader was killing members... -Full Story-

11 December 2013 Parm Gill, Conservative MP for Brampton-Springdale,  House of Commons, Ottawa Dear Parm: I notice that its 13 days before Christmas and you seem to have started to jolly yourself to celebrate literally the Holiday spirit and have got on your high-horse to lambast Sri Lanka saying, “the Sri Lankan government has failed to uphold the Commonwealths’ core values which are cherished by Canada.”   Come again, Parm!  If that  was supposed to be a Christmas spirit filled joke, you have pulled my wrong leg.  It’s... -Full Story-

Church warns of 'foreign intervention' in Sri Lanka
(The Daily Star :: Lebanon News :: http://www.dailystar.com.lb)
COLOMBO: The Catholic church Wednesday warned Sri Lanka's government of foreign intervention unless it worked towards reconciliation and addressed allegations of war crimes during the war against Tamil separatists. Malcolm Ranjith, the archbishop of Colombo, said he was urging President Mahinda Rajapakse and the main ethnic Tamil party to hammer out a political settlement or risk an international probe. "Foreigners should not tell us what to do... We are not a pack of fools," the cardinal said. "But if we do not resolve these issues, then we open ourselves... -Full Story-

The Editor, Dompost. Dear Editor,  Grant Baylon’s   defense of receiving $50,000 from a front of the FBI’s worlds most brutal terrorists, one of whose directors is in an US jail for trying to purchase arms for them is less than laudable. TNA will bring grief, not joy to Tamils - Prof. Rohan Gunaratna
Nadira Gunatilleke Courtesy The Daily News
Today, the TNA is radicalizing and militarizing the Tamil youth: terrorism will emerge unless Sri Lanka takes firm action against fanatics like Sritharan glorifying terrorist-criminals. Taking action will deter the emergence of fanatics like Sritharan in the future! Even after a huge loss of human lives, Sritharan continued to inflame racial passions. Like Sritharan, a few other racist leaders in the TNA suffer from an inferiority complex. Incapable of transcending their racial passions, it is they who want to emulate Prabhakaran, Prof. Rohan Gunaratne told the Daily News during a recent interview. Professor... -Full Story-

The reason for his cancelation of visa was that Paul Harris was critical of the 2002 Cease Fire Agreement and the LTTE. A Sustainable Economy by pursuing employment creation and income increases through import substitution

The warning given to Sri Lanka at the CHOGM by the British Premier tells me that the International Community wants to have a Regime Change. This can be said to be due to the fact that President Rajapaksa was firm and could not be moved to stop battling the LTTE in 2009. That also is indicative of the sinister motives of the SuperPowers. They  wanted to have an LTTE State in a portion of Sri Lanka.  Perhaps the manner in which  the LTTE diaspora is accepted with open arms by the Superpowers... -Full Story-

Sri Lankan HR Situation and Canada's Mr. Obhrai
Ira de Silva Canada
It appears that Canada has found another bone to pick with Sri Lanka and is again misusing the concept of human rights. Mr. Obhrai who represented Canada at the recent Commonwealth summit in Colombo now claims that he was deprived of air transport to Jaffna.  There are many accusations made against Sri Lanka by Canada without any basis. If Cameron was able to go without any problem, why would the third string representative from Canada be not allowed to go? Was it because  the necessary arrangements had not been made for him by the mission in... -Full Story-

The speech given by Hon Sarath Weerasekera in Parliament on 3rd Dec
Mr. Speaker,
In this  Committee Stage of the  Defence Budget let me first start by responding to some statements made by certain individuals, i.e,  Hon Sumandiram, the British Prime Minister David Camaroon, Hon Sambandan etc.. Hon Sumandiran , referring to the treacherous statement made by TNA MP Sreedharan, who said’ that Prabakaran was a hero, a freedom fighter and should be commemorated’, said in this Parliament that the people in a country which claimed to be civilized should have the freedom to commemorate the dead. He tried to insult my country through that sarcastic comment.                 First of all... -Full Story-

Fantastic method of collection of statistics and decision making!
Dr. Mareena Thaha Reffai, Vanderwert Place, Dehiwela
Srilanka must be the only country where a major decision is made by a person no less than a Minister asking two or three women he meets in a bus/ train and asks them whether they like to have women only compartment and when they say no, Presto, the Parliament decides there is no need! Obviously there will be women who will want to travel with their own men and if there are separate buses /trains for ladies this may be difficult. But surely if there are  women only compartments it will... -Full Story-

China tells Britain’s Cameron to return looted treasures – Third World must demand too
Shenali D Waduge
Off went Cameron to China in a huff thinking that Britain’s help was needed to prop up rising China’s economy. Lesson Cameron learnt humiliatingly was China is a great power Britain now is not. It was certainly no meeting of equals. If Cameron huffed and puffed in Colombo he certainly ended up groveling before China yet to no avail. If that was not enough to take back home China has demanded the return of priceless artefacts looted from Beijing in the 19th century. Now that China has set the ball rolling  is now time all former... -Full Story-

United National Party will never lead Sri Lanka because…..
 Shenali D Waduge
There is one reason and one reason alone that explains why the United National Party will never lead Sri Lanka and no one needs to be splitting hairs or having conventions to find out. UNP will not win elections because it does not command the Buddhist vote. The tragedy is that it does not even care to consider championing the Buddhist cause. The reason is plain and simple and explains why over the years it has forgotten the arithmetic realities of how parties can win elections and why parties win elections.  A leader who wants to celebrate... -Full Story-

E. W. Perera: a reflection on SL politics, then and now
Rita Perera
At present, not a day seems to go by when an increasing number of wrongs, even crimes, committed not by criminals but by some of our politicos are highlighted. Thankfully, it was not always so! Hence, it is refreshing to look back on an era, still within our living memory, of people who were willing to risk even their lives, in the interests of others in their country. Maybe it is wishful thinking that all is not lost and true values, such as, selflessness and true patriotism are not quite dead yet.  I am personally... -Full Story-

Dr. Mareena Thaha Reffai,Vanderwert Place, Dehiwela
The anti mosquito campaign is a failure is a foregone conclusion, proved not only by the ever increasing number of cases of Dengue and malaria but also be the way the government officials go about taking action. Once in a blue moon, suddenly there will be a flurry of activity from the officials and every house in a particular area will be visited and those who had even a coconut shell with stagnant water will be hauled up in the courts to pay heavy fines – fair enough. But the mosquitoes must be... -Full Story-

Sinhela Nation’s disarray dwarfs their true stature! Are the Sinhelas a Nation?
Anura Seneviratna.
There is an old saying, “ if leaders are great, the nation follows its example”. In an impartial close look at the island country of Sri Lanka , the nation of Sinhela people hold the indigenous heritage to the country in all its sovereign entirety. Indeed, the Sinhela people are the nation in the Island Country nicknamed as Sri Lanka. Hence, the national sovereignty of the Sinhela nation is inalienable and inviolable just as much as with every nation of every sovereign country. Tragically, the Sinhela nation inherited anti-national leaders as a direct impact of numerous intrusions of... -Full Story-

Lessons Learnt at CHOGM
by Gomin Dayasri
A sigh of relief - CHOGM is mercifully over – but watch for the fall out. Whether a supporter or detractor: unconcerned or uncommitted: that is immaterial- it is the aftermath that matters.  Did we accelerate the process Navi Pillay is trying to initiate at Geneva 2014 in taking our troops before an international inquiry on accountability? Did CHOGM provided a stage for the local/foreign hatemongers to perform to discredit the national image? Did Sri Lanka display to the dignitaries, the value of the peace dividend and its rewarding nature to all ethnicities making Sri Lanka... -Full Story-

Dangerous Ideas and Strategies that hoodwinked Sri Lanka
by Shenali D. Waduge
At some stage or the other the people of Sri Lanka would need to sit down and carefully deliberate over exactly what and who contributed and continues to contribute towards steadily reversing the great victory of the Ranaviru in defeating terrorism in Sri Lanka in May 2009.  Some agreements that had either been authored or agreed to sign on behalf of Sri Lanka have virtually sealed Sri Lanka’s fate. Before we accuse external sources of attempting to destabilize the country we need to look inward, without bias and identify objectively from a country-centric point of view... -Full Story-

The Spread of the CDU Kidney Disease: Is ten thousand deaths not sufficient to spur us to action
By Garvin Karunaratne. Ph.D.
I am perturbed to hear that CDU is found to have spread to the North Western Province, This disease has already caused the deaths of at least ten thousand  people in the North Central Province and though this has been investigated by local as well as international institutions like the WHO, the spread has not yet been arrested. It appears to me that no definite course of action has been taken because of conflicting advise and in view of the fact that the advice has been offered by  authorities of repute  it is not... -Full Story-
