COLOMBO, March 24 (Reuters) - The Sri Lankan rupee traded weaker on Friday on importer dollar demand despite the central bank's decision to raise key rates by 25 basis points in a move to ease the pressure on the currency. The central bank raised its benchmark interest rates by 25 basis points before the markets open on Friday for the first time in eight months to contain high inflationary expectations and a possible acceleration of demand side inflationary pressures. The police (CID) report that alleges Gotabhaya maintained ‘death squads’ is only quoting Sarath Fonseka. It is not a conclusion drawn from a police investigation. It is hearsay! It is common practice hearsay is not evidence.
Dilrook Kannangara
The police (CID) report that alleges Gotabhaya maintained ‘death squads’ is only quoting Sarath Fonseka. It is not a conclusion drawn from a police investigation. It is hearsay! It is common practice hearsay is not evidence. Sarath Fonseka has been saying this for the past seven years for political reasons. Since he is now a minister of the government and Gotabhaya is out of power, Fonseka’s statements carry weight in extremely politicized police and investigation panels in Sri Lanka. Fonseka was imprisoned by former president Rajapaksa in 2010. Now Gotabhaya is at the receiving end. A former... -Full Story-

UN General Assembly & UN Security Council Members – UNHRC head is violating the UN Charter and abusing his office against Sri Lanka
Shenali D Waduge
A grave miscarriage of justice is taking place in front of the UN General Assembly members and UN Security Council. The UNHRC and the OHCHR head is violating the UN Charter and abusing the office in an unsubstantiated and malicious witch hunt against Sri Lanka. We give below examples of these violations and injustices. The UNHRC head is in violation Article 2.7 of the UN Charter demanding Sri Lanka to change its constitution and denigrating our judges and judicial system. The history of UNP’s deceptions, betrayals and oppressions Part I of Part V
By : A.A.M.NIZAM - MATARA
The United National Party, the party of the Anglophile and Western slavish elites have come to power in many elections only through blatant lies, misleading the people and giving false promises. As far as I remember this type of deceiving the people started in July 1960 election when we were school kids at that time.  Infuriated by the defeat of the March 1960 government in its Throne Speech by the negative vote cast by the Federal Party the UNP launched an aggressive election campaign for the July 1960 election led by Mr. Dudley Senanayake... -Full Story-

Government’s five unpatriotic documents
By Magamputhra Courtesy ceylon Today
"Although the government tried to cover up things, now everything is being revealed gradually." The doings of the government are coming to light, so much so that the above can be said. Although certain media are trying to hide this information, Mahinda did not allow them to be concealed and released that information to some media during the immediate past in a criticizing manner which put the government in a spot. Mahinda mentioned five unpatriotic documents of the government and slashed them, not without a reason. Accordingly the two main promises given to the people... -Full Story-

A Blueprint for Disintegration
By Ananda Ariyarathne Courtesy Ceylon Today
"Normally a Constitution has the answers to any kind of complications; as it would either directly specify or indirectly facilitate the conditions that would provide the solutions. If a Constitution is made to provide the answers to complications that have been created for the objectives, pretending to be truly representative of the realities, the very purpose of a Constitution shall be lost and instead shall become the bases for new complications which would keep the beneficiaries burdened with, at the end." It is only now the true indications... -Full Story-

Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa has issued a letter via his attorney to the Agence France-Presse (AFP) an international news agency headquartered in Paris, complaining over the “false and distorted” publication carried out under the heading ‘Ex-leader’s Brother Led Death Squad in Sri Lanka’. He states that the news item authored by AFP’s local correspondent Amal Jayasinghe had stated that a police report had implicated that Rajapaksa had led a unit that was accused of assassinating the former editor of Sunday Leader newspaper, Lasantha Wickramatunga, during his tenure as Defence Secretary. Is UNHRC another LTTE terrorist-front?
Shenali D Waduge
When organizations and individuals banned as LTTE fronts in particular those that openly provided material support to the LTTE over the years and have unabashedly commenced websites seeking donations and support to create the very Eelam that the LTTE was fighting for, are regular visitors to the UNHRC and are instrumental in pushing for war crimes tribunals against the Sri Lankan Armed Forces, the UNHRC needs to seriously re-assess itself. Terror in London
Dr. Chula Rajapakse MNZM, Spokepserson, United Sri Lanka Assn, Wellington NZ
Our hearts go out to the victims of the terrorist attack at Parliament Square in London today. However, I cannot but recall how on this same Square in June 2009, I witnessed a vociferous group of supporters of Prabakaran, the leader of the brutal Tamil Tigers who had terrorized Sri Lanka for three decades, who had been deposed a few weeks earlier, chanting loudly " Who is our leader … Prabakaran, , What do we want …Tamil Elam". UNHRC Resolution: Confusion over who committed to foreign judges
By Kelum Bandara Courtesy The Daily Mirror
Ahead of the vote on yet another resolution on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) tomorrow, an intense debate has taken place on the move for the inclusion of foreign judges in a judicial mechanism to hear accountability and human rights issues during the war time. In Memory of the Fallen Ranaviruos at Mullaitivu, July 16-26, 1996
By Ananda-USA
As we watch the war-heroes of the Sri Lankan Nation being crucified at the UNHRC in Geneva, not only by the Tamil Eelamists who waged a brutal take-no-prisoners war in Sri Lanka and now posing as wailing victims, but also by our own government officials aiding and abetting those racist separatists, let us take a moment to reflect on the price our war-heroes paid in flesh and blood to preserve our Motherland in the Battle of Mullaitivu in 1996. Huge tax relief may hurt palm arrack manufacturers: SLFP YF
Yoshitha Perera Courtesy The Daily Mirror
If the distillery owned by Arjun Aloysius is given a huge tax concession it would have serious repercussions on palm arrack manufactured in the Northern Province, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Youth Front (SLFPYF) said today. SLFP Youth Front President Shantha Bandara said the Excise Department and the Finance Ministry had permitted the construction of the distillery. He said the Government had already increased excise duty on locally manufactured palm arrack and coconut toddy while the Finance Ministry had also given tax concessions to local distilleries. Infections of the Mind – Lies that work
R Chandrasoma
It is commonly assumed that a factual statement or a proposition of some importance is deemed true or authentic only if there is proof of its validity. In other words, a proposition – if acceptable – must rest on sound evidence. In the world of politics this wisdom is rarely seen. To be more focused, let us see how a ‘political truth’ spreads. It is ‘propagated’ as a ‘meme’ – term first used by Richard Dawkins. A meme is an unconscious conditioning of the mind through the infective spread of a captivating idea. The truth is eclipsed... -Full Story-

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and the Buddhist Philosophy
Ruwan M Jayatunge M.D.
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a modified form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that was developed in late 1970s by Marsha M. Linehan a psychology researcher at the University of Washington (Linehan, 1993).  DBT is an empirically supported treatment for suicidal individuals (Linehan et al., 2015). It can be adapted to treat borderline personality disorder patients with comorbid substance-abuse disorder (Koerner & Linehan, 2000) and depressed elderly clients with personality disorders (Lynch et al., 2003). DBT addresses deficits in emotion regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal relationship. The patients with borderline personality disorder have faulty schemas and splitting in the patient’s relations to others. They have... -Full Story-

TAKING SIDES: THE REAL CHOICES BEFORE SRI LANKA
 By Dayan Jayatilleke
Hafeel Farisz confuses what I have said about Gotabaya and Gunaratnam, both of whom are the most interesting figures I find in the Sri Lankan public arena today, because they come from two different streams of struggle of our conflicted contemporary history—two different civil wars. Farisz tries to impose on me a choice between Gotabaya and Gunaratnam. The choice is between the Ranil-driven status quo and President Sirisena heading a recomposed coalition  Putin has blood on his hands because he saved his country from Chechen terrorism This country... -Full Story-

The Gotabhaya Project: a strong, modern nation
by Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka Courtesy The Island
March 19, 2017, 12:00 pm US-based Hafeel Farisz has written a double-barreled critique of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and me, though as he says, I am the primary target because of the intellectual dimension or pretensions that I bring to bear. It is quite tempting for me to respond at the level of theory, but that would be a diversion. That is not what this entire matter is about. Farisz’ critique takes place in a certain context. One aspect of that context is my formula that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa should be the Presidential candidate and Mahinda... -Full Story-

March 20, 2017, 8:01 pm A determined effort is being made in some quarters to dupe the public into believing that the 2015 UNHRC Resolution on Sri Lanka, co-sponsored by the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe regime, does not call for a hybrid war crimes tribunal. This claim, based on some perverted logic, does not stand up to scrutiny. The aforesaid UNHRC resolution welcomes the GoSL ‘proposal to establish a judicial mechanism with a special counsel to investigate allegations of violations and abuses of human rights and violations of international humanitarian law ….’ It hastens to add that it ‘affirms... -Full Story-

Learning from Western Australia – a response
By Vinod Moonesinghe
March 20, 2017, 8:03 pm Perhaps symptomatic of the extent to which the Yahapalanaya regime has failed to fulfil its promises is that its supporters among the intelligentsia are now distancing themselves from it. The latest of them appears to be Prof. Laksiri Fernando ("Western Australian Elections and Possible Lessons for Sri Lanka", 17 March 2017). One of the principal reasons why intellectuals such as Fernando, who were associated with the international non-governmental organisation (INGO) sector, threw themselves so heartily into the Yahapalana camp was that they had imbibed so much in the INGO discourse that... -Full Story-

Indian interventions in Sri Lanka
Sultan M Hali
INDIA has tried to interfere in the affairs of every neighbour and create instability to prove its supremacy. Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka; all have suffered due to Indian illusions of grandeur. Pakistan, of course is reserved for special treatment, because India never forgave Pakistan for breaking away from “mother India”. As far as Sri Lanka is concerned, the inhabitants of the Indian State of Tamil Nadu identify with the Sri Lankan Tamils who comprise 18 percent of Sri Lanka and are considered a minority. Idiots close down the Indian Consular Offices in Jaffna and Hambantota Immediately, lest they become another set of agency houses of Eelam and centers of Indian expansionism
Dr Sudath Gunasekara
18.3.2017. It was reported that the recently opened Indian Consular Office in Jaffna is providing forged documents to South India Tamils to migrate to northern Sri Lanka. This is a very serious threat to the security of the country that call for the immediate attention of all Sinhala people. T What hey have reported is only what they know. It could be only the tip of the iceberg.I have no doubt that the conspiracy in invading this country is being done in many different and subtle ways.. Staying in power and staying power
BY MALINDA SENEVIRATNE
It has become a tradition for Ranil Wickremesinghe to visit various signature tents at the Royal-Thomian and respond to questions put to him.  It’s all light-hearted.  The questions are often tongue-in-cheek stuff and the responses are calculated to generate some laughter, one feels. It was no different this year.  Two questions stood out because they were as serious as they were light.  The responses, similarly, drew laughter and also provided food for thought. One question was about prosecuting wrongdoers (of the previous regime).  The Prime Minister was essentially asked when they would be brought to... -Full Story-

Dhaka: Asia-Pacific Forum Environmental Journalists (APFEJ), in the backdrop of Indian government’s recent decision to ban a British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) scribe on filming in its tiger reserves, has urged New Delhi to be reverent to the global media outlets respecting the democratic spirit of the country. Yahapalana brain-fade in Geneva

Way back when Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government was getting slammed left, right and centre by the ‘international (sic) community’, especially at the UNHRC, his detractors were thrilled.  Little did they care that the accusers were tainted in ways that made Sri Lanka look pretty innocent in terms of (alleged) ‘war crimes’.  Rajapaksa was accused of being moronic in his foreign policy.  Dark stories were spread about impending sanctions.  The removal of the GSP Plus facility was thrown in as evidence and a sign of worse things to come. The previous regime resisted all moves to... -Full Story-

The most potent governance tool of Sri Lanka is blackmail. Presidents use it extensively to buy compliance from friend and foe alike. President Sirisena sits on at least nine (9) investigation reports. The president doesn’t seem to care about punishing the corrupt. He is not at all interested in the massive drain of state coffers due to the Central Bank bond fraud of 2015. Making a Constitution Violating sovereignty
By Ananda Ariyarathne Courtesy Ceylon Today
"A sensible Constitution of a nation should be the reflection of its sovereignty. All the 'Constitutions of the past' did not destroy the sovereignty of Sri Lankan people, although there had been some weaknesses. Contrary to the argument that the Soulbury Constitution was a copy of the British system, it could be taken now as the most ideal when compared to the two main Constitutions introduced subsequently. At the time it was still being planned, there was no cause for alarm for a gap between the Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamils. Even after six... -Full Story-

The Joint Opposition today made a request to President Maithripala Sirisena to advise Foreign Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera to safeguard the country’s freedom, integrity and the Constitution while dealing with the Geneva Proposals. Joint Opposition Leader MP Dinesh Gunawardena told a news briefing that it was the government’s responsibility to work on the proposals which were in favour of our country rather than continuing with the ones which were against it. “Several people mocked at us when we have once said the hybrid courts are not feasible in Sri Lanka. Key shows the way
Editorial The Island
March 15, 2017, 8:01 pm Nothing is, perhaps, more indicative of a country’s backwardness than its political leaders’ desire to cling on to power like limpets even when they are superannuated. Mature democracies throw up enough and more capable leaders and they don’t wait till they are long in the tooth to be put out to grass; they retire prematurely. In New Zealand, Prime Minister John Key, who retired in December last year, is planning to leave Parliament next week. Key has not made known the exact reason for his sudden exit from politics and the... -Full Story-

TAMILS OPEN YOUR EYES. What has happened to South Sudan will happen to Eelam
Shenali D Waduge
Kosovo was illegally created using lies to enable West to establish a NATO base. Today, people living in Kosovo are struggling to survive. Very few countries will deal with them. They have to beg to the very countries that supported their independence. South Sudan independence was also created with the involvement of the same players- foreign missions, UN officials and western NGOs. South Sudan got its independence in 2011 while Kosovo independence came in 2008. The comparisons between Kosovo, South Sudan & Sri Lanka are interesting and requires the Tamil community to realize how isolated... -Full Story-

An Ancient Island in Dire Peril
IMRC Iriyagolle
Ayubowan, We cannot allow India, any other country or any other force to dictate to us.  The country must develop a strategy to destroy the enemies within first,  the corrupt, destructive, selfish and sadistic politicians who have become 'pawn brokers' to remain in power by any means.   The nation should consider rejecting demagogues as well. Our ancient rich Buddhist cultural heritage, an ancient superior civilisation cannot be, should not be destroyed by hostile forces from within or without.  The Sinhalese have portrayed self destructive  traits.  JVP launched an insurgency to kill the Sinhalese to combat this... -Full Story-

In perspective: Gota factor, Gota project, then and now
By DR. DAYAN JAYATILLLEKA
March 12, 2017, 9:43 pm The impact and landmark nature of the Viyath Maga annual convention is discernible in the coverage in the country’s top business paper which has a wide corporate readership, the Daily FT, owned, I might add, by the Wijewardene family, hardly backers of the JO or the Rajapaksas. An Ancient Island in Dire Peril

Ancient Sri Lanka paid heavily for its misfortune in being very close to that politico-geographic behemoth called India. Indeed, the history of our land is - broadly speaking - coterminous with our encounters with our dangerous neighbour. The fact that we are - to some degree - plagiarists in matters of culture and religion does not obviate the fact that the principal threat to our ancient civilization has come from India. Indeed, opportunistic invasions and partial colonization by hordes from India were a sad but indelible feature of our rich and varied history. This threat continues to... -Full Story-

Reconciliation is a two way street
BY SHIVANTHI RANASINGHE Courtesy Ceylon Today
The focus of the West, UN, civil rights groups and like-minded politicians, is to engineer reconciliation in Sri Lanka. Their agenda is to reconcile the Sinhalese with the Tamils. Unfortunately, this is not necessarily a move to bring the Sinhalese and the Tamils together, but rather for the Sinhalese to be more accommodative to Tamil demands. It is their expert view that the 30 years of terrorism is the cumulative result of deep divisions between the two communities. These divisions, according to them, were caused by the majority community, the Sinhala Buddhists asserting its... -Full Story-

The election was held on 17 August and four days later I learnt that I had not been put into Parliament. I had been on the UPFA National List, which I gathered had been with the approval of both factions of the SLFP. But it had become clear almost immediately that the polarization that was taking place would leave no room for anyone trying to hold a balance. I had not been able, before it was submitted, to see the President to check about whether I would be on the list. But I did see him on 14... -Full Story-

In that letter, the JSC stated that if the BASL had made ‘no proper recommendation’ that Kannan be appointed a High Court judge, the recommendation that the JSC had sent earlier to the President had ‘no force or avail in law’. This retraction by the JSC made Ramanathan Kannan’s appointment as High Court Judge... -Full Story-

Cry of a River. The trouble with India-s toilets and drinking water.
The proper disposal of human waste is a pressing issue in India with proper toilets a rarity in rural areas. Many millions of villagers never even consider installing a regular toilet, held back either by poverty or blind acceptance of the status quo. Defecating in streets and fields is unsanitary and leads to the faecal contamination of ground water and so, waterborne diseases are commonplace. The government is attempting to address the problem with financial support and education initiatives for villagers.... -Full Story- (https:/rtd.rt.com/ - 13/03/17)

Of these, 80,000 men, women and children are in need ‘urgent life-saving support’.ii The numbers of drought-affected Lankans are likely to increase in the coming months, especially if the monsoons fail to become active (as was the case last year), and drought is transformed from a seasonal phenomenon to a fact of daily life. This week, the government moved a... -Full Story-

Yahapalana brain-fade in Geneva
by Malinda Seneviratne
March 11, 2017, 7:05 pm Way back when Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government was getting slammed left, right and centre by the ‘international (sic) community’, especially at the UNHRC, his detractors were thrilled. The previous regime resisted... -Full Story-

How rich & influential is the LTTE Diaspora kitty after LTTE defeat?
Shenali D Waduge
The business of terrorism has caused bloodshed and agony. It lasted 30 long years. While the innocent died, were maimed and continue to dress the wounds, the strategists, planners, fundraisers and propagandists continue to thrive plotting another debacle. Their endeavor is to continue to milk the LTTE cash cow kept alive by the promise of a Tamil Homeland that has been the driving force for decades and the carrot presented to voluntarily or by force keep the kitty filled. The players who silently raised funds for LTTE when Prabakaran was alive have today established themselves as... -Full Story-

The Voices of threatened Buddhists must be heard at the UN Day of Vesak 2017 Conference
by Senaka Weeraratna
Of all the international Buddhist Conferences held in Sri Lanka the one that stands out clearly above the rest is the Conference held in 1950, particularly because it led to the formation of the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB). There was a huge need then for unity of all Buddhist schools and Dr. G.P. Malalasekera’s vision ensured that disparate groups were brought together under the banner of fellowship via the WFB. The world of 2017 is significantly different to that of 1950. If the UN Day of Vesak Conference to be held in Colombo in the month... -Full Story-

Israeli Lawmakers Advance Bill to Curb Loudspeakers in Muslim Call to Prayer
By NIRAJ CHOKSHI Courtesy The New York Times
A bill that would regulate the traditional use of loudspeakers for the Muslim call to prayer passed its first legislative hurdle in Israel’s Parliament on Wednesday, provoking frustration and anger among some Arab lawmakers. One version of the bill would prohibit places of worship from using loudspeakers between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., while another would ban any broadcast over such speakers regardless of the time of day if it is deemed “unreasonably loud,” the BBC reported. The first daily prayer is traditionally performed before sunrise. Both versions passed with slim majorities,... -Full Story-

USLA Wellington Spokesperson’s Report
2016 April to 2017 March - Dr. Chula Rajapakse MNZM
The year began with me being shown a picture of a car on a Wellington road , brazenly displaying a personalized plate bearing the letters , LTTE. Having come to NZ to escape from LTTE terror, I decided   that very evening to seek the withdrawal  of this taunting plate and have it’s owner placed under surveillance, on the basis of  the plate  being a brazen declaration of support for a brutal terrorist group, it being offensive to those of us who were victims or potential victims of their terror,... -Full Story-

APPALLING SITUATION
By Dr. Tilak. S.Fernando
During a visit to a local renowned supermarket last week I approached the 'pharmacist' to make enquires about an allopathic cardiac drug (RanCV500). A guy who did not appear to have any knowledge of the inquired medicine questioned me as to what the drug was prescribed for? Quite bemused by the answer coming out of the so-called 'pharmacist' I ventured to ask him whether he was a qualified pharmacist, to which his answer was affirmative. I was not satisfied, and summoned the store manager to his presence and enquired whether the employee was a qualified... -Full Story-

Ex-Attorney General In Hot Water For Favouring Ravi Karunanayake In Money Laundering Case
Courtesy Colombo Telegraph
Former Attorney General Yuvanjana Wijayatilake has been accused of abusing his office and for unethically granting favours to Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake. In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption (CIABOC) yesterday, Nagananda Kodituwakku, an Attorney-at-Law and Public Interest Litigation Activist claimed that Wijayatilake had abused his office by offering favours to Karunanayake, which according to Kodituwakku falls within the offence of corruption as defined in the Section 70 of the Bribery Act. In an affidavit filed along with the letter, Kodituwakku said that he had ‘credible evidence’ against the ex-Attorney... -Full Story-

Editorial Courtesy The Island
March 10, 2017, 9:24 pm Some French voters, fed up with their leaders, especially the candidates in the presidential race, recently chose to give vent to their pent-up anger in an unusual manner. They launched a campaign to invite former US President Barack Obama to run for President in their country! They have thus sent a very clear message to the French politicians who have failed to live up to public expectations. Sri Lankans are doubtlessly as resentful as the French where their failed politicians are concerned though it is doubtful whether they are enamoured of... -Full Story-

Distorting Thirukkural in a bid to justify cruelty to animals

March 10, 2017, 9:20 pm In all the recent sound and fury about Jallikattu, many people from Tamil Nadu quoted the Thirukkural to justify their support to this horrendous cruelty to helpless animals. In fact, after it was forcibly restarted by a very strange notification by the state governor, who overrode two judgments of the Supreme Court, thereby weakening the very fabric of India’s administration, hundreds of people have been wounded and some have died in these so called peaceful games that only demonstrate the "Tamil love for the bull". An interesting question arose at a recent Royal Asiatic Society’s Monthly Lecture, delivered by H. L. D. At the end of Mahindapala’s presentation, during the question time, a young member of the audience raised a question on the following lines: ‘Who are the Sinhalese? Was there a land called Sinhale in India from where they came? Did the olden day kings identify themselves as Sinhalese? I mean the bonds we hear and read about every day – these big money bonds. You mean the Central Bank and Treasury bond stuff? How can anyone accuse a person of murder without a dead body? We know how many Sri Lankan Soldiers died in the final phased but there is a big question mark as to how many LTTE cadres died. After the battle of the victorious Lions against the Tamil Tigers; it was taken carelessly to account that no more will it ever be possible for the northern terrain to fall into the hands of any political separatism. Therefore it was decided by the then government to hold Provincial Council Elections under the Proportional Representation (PR) Electoral System in the Northern Province. This was the first step down for the slippery destruction of the dynamic Lion regime of the nation which was internationally saluted for defeating terrorism. H. L. D. Mahindapala
Starting from the Dutch period to modern times, the Jaffna Tamil leadership, which consisted exclusively of the Vellalas, relied entirely on two fundamental ideologies to retain their power and  privileges in the peninsula. Both ruling ideologies were defined in two separate documents. First was the Tesawalamai codified by Class Isaacksz, Dissawe of Jaffna, on  January 30, 1707, for the guidance of Dutch rulers. Second was the Batakotte (Tamilised as Vadukoddai) Resolution (1976) written by the Vellalas for the preservation and glory of the Vellalas. The Tamil translation of the Tesawalamai was vetted and endorsed by... -Full Story-

The Buddhist Philosophy and Critical Thinking

The Buddha's Charter of Free Inquiry and judging truth are found in the Kalama Sutra of the Anguttara Nikaya. In Kalama Sutra Buddha emphasized the importance of critical thinking that involves seeing things in an open-minded way. Critical thinking helps to evaluate and challenge the thoughts and ideas   and rethink conclusions in the light of new knowledge. Buddhism was conceived as a rational way of thought, being entirely in accordance with the latest findings of the natural sciences and Buddhism was not based on 'dogmas of blind belief and revelation, but on rational thought and experiential examination. Accordingly, members of the JSA will be officiating at the BASL elections to be held on 15 March. March 7, 2017, 8:09 pm The Treasury bond scams, currently being probed by a presidential commission, have had a devastating impact on the entire country. The private sector workers are the worst affected. Their superannuation fund or the EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund) had suffered a staggering loss of Rs. 15 bn, the JVP said on Monday. The Marxist outfit demanded that the loss be recovered forthwith from the bond racketeers. Economists and financial experts are also agreed on the amount the EPF has lost. Private sector workers are left with only the EPF refunds, upon retirement, to... -Full Story-

The former Director of the Audit Department of the Central Bank (CB) Deepa Seneviratne says that following an order issued by former CB Governor Arjuna Mahendran, the management of the Central Bank was forced to approve a sum of Rs 10 billion, which was put out as collateral for the sale of bonds. She had told the Special Presidential Commission (SPC) probing the CB bond scam, that as there was no other recourse, the then CB management was forced to grant its approval. President’s dilemma
Rajiva Wijesinha
I returned from Azerbaijan on 23 June and had to go that morning to Parliament for a COPE meeting. The report on the Bond scam was being drafted, and it was clear that it would show that Arjuna Mahendran had interfered egregiously with bond placements to the great detriment of the economy. The Opposition was feeling quite confident, but this made it push its luck and indicate that it would press for a motion of No Confidence on the Prime Minister, who had clearly been responsible for what had happened, as indicated by his spirited defence of his... -Full Story-

Ignoring N Q Dias strategy, the UNP Government removal of military camps helped LTTE terrorism arise – same mistake should not be repeated
Shenali D Waduge
N Q Dias was referred to as Sri Lanka’s Clausewitz. He was the most powerful public servant serving as Permanent Secretary for Defense plus Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister in the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Government of 1960-65. Having read Panikkar Doctrine he was apprehensive of India’s designs on Sri Lanka. His anticipation of the rise of a Tamil separatist war was prophetic. His grand strategy to counter this was brilliant. Successive UNP Governments either failed to understand the prophecy or preferred to remove and reverse the decisions taken thereby helping militancy to rise. The American novelist Ernest Hemingway is considered as the greatest writer of the 20th century. Hemingway explored universal themes such as life, love and death.  His name was a synonym for an approach to life characterized by action, courage, physical prowess, stamina, violence, independence, and above all "grace under pressure (Yalom & Yalom, 1971). Hemingway brought a revolution in style and was a keen observer of the contemporary world and human nature (Dieguez, 2010). With his influential work Ernest Hemingway became the the archetypal American writer. Sri Lanka in a catch-22 situation
EDITORIAL Courtesy The Daily Mirror
Officially Sri Lanka today is in a situation best described by the Sinhala idiom ‘Girayata ahuwechcha puwak gediya wage’ –a Catch-22 situation- a paradoxical situation from which there is hardly any chance of escape. The country faces an almost insurmountable foreign exchange and external debt repayment crisis; a problem of finding backers to help extricate itself from this situation. The External Debt in Sri Lanka averaged 42,142.63 USD Million from 2012 until 2016, reached an all time high of 47,302.10 USD Million in the third quarter of 2016. Put the question to a Sinhalese flagging reconciliation and ‘worse’ is what you are likely to get.  And that’s not only because the government has been a poor communicator on... -Full Story-

Dr Ruwan M Jayatunge
A world renowned social psychologist Philip Zimbardo conducted a prison simulation study in 1971 at the Stanford University with his student volunteers. He randomly divided these volunteers into guards and inmates and then placed in a mock prison environment. This study continued for six days and Zimbardo observed radical behavioural changes in guards and prisoners over time. He noticed sadistic abuse in prison guards and abject submissiveness among the prisoners.   Professor Zimbado’s Stanford prison experiment uncovered the manifestation of deindividuation, vandalism and dehumanization when ordinary people were put in to specific authoritative figures with unlimited... -Full Story-

The government’s new agriculture policy as enunciated in its policy document ‘Toxin –Free Nation- Three year Plan, 2016, is sadly full of errors and un-achievable. The policy, among other things, stipulates replacing agrochemicals over a specified time frame( 3 years according to the document), with organic agriculture and  microbial fertilizer technologies; and cultivation of  30% of the rice extent in traditional varieties. It is argued that traditional varieties(YVs) are more nutritious and of higher medicinal value than the new improved varieties(NIVs). This is not true and  there are NIVs with comparable nutritive value. On the other... -Full Story-

Stalin’s Mind
Dr Ruwan M Jayatunge
Joseph Stalin was one of the main architects of creating a collective trauma in the Soviet Union. His actions and policies brought immense suffering to the people. The aftermath of Stalin’s repression still impacts the post Soviet Society. However despite all the negative consequences Stalin is still remembered in Russia as a great hero who saved the Soviet Union from Hitler’s Fascist aggression and transformed the country in to a super power. The Stalinist past still shapes the Russian society today (Gouldner 2009). A survey commissioned by the Carnegie Endowment in 2012, suggested that Soviet... -Full Story-

The imbecile British MPs should understand that Sri Lanka is not a colony of theirs
By : A.A.M.NIZAM - MATARA
The British Imperialists who grossly plundered the wealth and resources of the Asia Pacific and African nations in competition with several other European tyrant countries, who butchered scores of natives in countries they set their dirty foot in, who created ethnic divisions in their colonized countries and made people to hate each other, who denied even basic and employment rights to the majority people in these colonies, who created a bourgeois class in these countries, to continuously sustain their interests and remain ever slavish to them, left Sri Lanka in 1948 leaving a horde... -Full Story-

Jousting with the JO: Let the real opposition do its duty to the country
By Rohana R. Wasala
Kumar David (‘First trounce the Joint Opposition’/Sunday Island/February 19, 2017), speaking for those whom he calls ‘many experts’, asserts that ‘if amendments to the constitution live up to what is really needed, they have to be substantial and hence need to be approved at a referendum. If an entirely new constitution is to be enacted it will of course require a referendum’. By ‘what is really needed’, doesn’t he mean a camouflaged federal constitution? the federal seed inside unitary seed coat of the constitutional rice grain, as one Joint Opposition MP puts it? Kumar David’s... -Full Story-

The claims and counter-claims of intransigence
BY MALINDA SENEVIRATNE
Leader of the Opposition and the senior citizen of Tamil Nationalism R Sampanthan in an adjournment motion has made some interesting points.   “All people who lived in Sri Lanka, irrespective of their ethnicity, religion, or any other difference, whether Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim or Burgher made their fullest contribution to the achievement of independence. It is almost 70 years since Sri Lanka attained Independence from Colonial Rule. Ethnic strife had plagued the country from shortly after it attained Independence. TNA’S TRAP REFERENDUM FOR EXIT
Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka Courtesy The Daily Mirror
A funny thing happened in-between the reconvening of the Steering Committee of the Constitutional Assembly (Feb 21) and the adjournment motion on the Constitution held the next day in Parliament. TNA MP MA Sumanthiran and target of an assassination attempt by the LTTE, struck a discordant note in his speech at a seminar on “The Constitution, Reconciliation & You”, organized by Sri Lanka Inc. and held at the Buddhist Cultural Center auditorium on February 21st evening. His speech and mine (which came much later) triggered off a heated debate that kept the event... -Full Story-

In this interview, The Island staffer C. A. Chandraprema speaks to one of the most senior... -Full Story-

By Ram Madhav, RSS Akhil Bharatiya Sah Sampark Pramukh Courtesy  SAMVDA
New Delhi March 28: Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) – a Buddhist organisation many wish to call as Right or Ultra Right – is a new phenomenon in Sri Lanka. One may prefer to brand them in any manner one would like to. But the fact remains that this new outfit is slowly growing in stature and popular support in the country’s Buddhist-dominated areas. It came into prominence due to its public opposition to the Halal mark on all products marketed in Sri Lanka. This was the demand made and... -Full Story-
