Casinos conflict with culture of Sri Lanka – Relocate them elsewhere
Shenali Waduge
The religious texts of Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam all explicitly prohibit and discourages gambling and other such related vices. Nevertheless, numerous casinos have been operating in Sri Lanka over the years. It has now emerged that one of the world’s biggest and most famous casino operators is eyeing on setting up a mega casino complex in the heart of Colombo. A common census amongst the 3 main communities of Sri Lanka would like that due respect must be given to the cultures and values most of us still wish to uphold and would like to propose that... -Full Story-

The forum expresses disappointment over Canadian Government stance on Sri Lanka
CANADIAN SOUTH ASIAN FOR PEACE UNITY FORUM PRESS RELEASE
We observed Prime Minister Stephen Harper's stint at possibly changing the venue for November, 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka.  We also observed Foreign Minister John Baird's immature biased statements highlighting a misguided Canadian foreign policy.  It is further appalling to understand the real driving force behind this current trend that wishes to cause unnecessary harm to a tiny nation that is slowly recovering from a post colonial conflict which lasted over 30 odd years. True reconciliation starts with all actors and characters... -Full Story-

“Thank you, US. Sri Lanka has more than two provinces that need help”
Asada M Erpini
A news report titled “U.S. support for community development in Eastern Sri Lanka”, which appeared in the media on 30 April, talks of the assistance given by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to build a public market and a bus station in Batticaloa. It mentions further that USAID previously supported Pollumalai through healthcare improvement programs and community services. To accompany the story, there is naturally the picture of the gleaming US Ambassador, who obviously will be a darling of the people of the Eastern Province. Sri Lankans are grateful to the US, the... -Full Story-

Questions on the “Chef”- Student “Kumar” Enigma
Kanthar P Balanathan
28th April 2013 Mr Trevor Grant Spokesman Tamil Refugee Council Dear Mr Trevor Grant It has befitted crucial to write, as stories emanating from the Tamil quadrants have reached beyond veracity. I am a SriLankan born Tamil, but a patriotic Australian, and I can confidently affirm that I comprehend our (Tamil & Sinhalese) culture, customs and behavioural patterns more than anyone else outside our ethnic group or in any NGOs. Prabakaran kept India out of Sri Lanka - why are we not doing the same?
 Shenali Waduge
India admits that initial training for Tamil militant groups including LTTE was given by India and that training continued from post 1983 to 1987 which is why the Indian Government took pains to remove details of India’s training from the Jain Commission report. Be that as it may, Prabakaran never trusted India and ensured India was always kept in its place though India was able to fool successive Sri Lankan Governments and probably continues to do so. Ironically, if ever patriotic Sri Lankan needs to be thankful at all to Prabakaran – that is for keeping India... -Full Story-

How to handle Western Media
S de Silve - London
Well, I have been a consistent critic of the incompetencies of the GoSL in the past in the handling of Western media.  However when the GoSL does it much better I need to applaud that  too – and there is a lesson here for all Sri Lankan representatives abroad on how to handle the media. I refer to the Interview between the   cabinet spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella and BBC’s international correspondent - Lyse Doucet: See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-22325775 That is the way the situation should be handled, Not in a servile manner nor in an unnecessarily confrontational... -Full Story-

Ban Hate Speech – Begin with the Bible and Koran
Shenali Waduge
Everybody looked forward to the Rally for Unity – a vigil held in Colombo on 28 April 2013 to oppose hate speech. The event was marred and exposed by the reporting of BBC’s Charles Haviland who showed the hypocrisy of the entire exercise “About 500 people have marched through the centre of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, protesting against a recent wave of ethnic hatred which has seen hardline Buddhists targeting the Muslim minority”. So if the theme in arranging a unity rally was to target one group (without the possible knowledge of the participants) what can... -Full Story-

The TNA And Pro-Eelamist Diaspora Are Singing In Unison Calling For Venue Change Of CHOGM Which points To An Anti Government Conspiracy Involved!
Insight By Sunil Kumar
April 30th 2013 It seems to be a travesty of justice that the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has been tolerated as Parliamentarian and given any political rights in Sri Lanka as these are the very same deadbeats who once openly supported and carried banners for the treacherous terror group the Tamil Tigers until they were destroyed by the Government and the TNA began chirping  different tunes to cover their derrieres. Once the terrorists were put down it appears to have been a great oversight on the part of the GOSL to have given any leeway to the TNA knowing fully... -Full Story-

Moving Commonwealth Summit from Sri Lanka
Ira de Silva London, Canada
Mr. Harper, the Canadian Prime Minister, has been saying that he would prefer Sri Lanka to not hold the Commonwealth summit since before the last meeting in Australia in 2011. It is not just a "hint", it has been his stated policy that he would not go to Colombo unless the GOSL met with his long list of "conditions". Is the Quran Hate Propaganda? What the Holiest Book of Islam Really says about Non-Muslims
The Religion of Peace.com
On September 25, 2002, a group of armed Islamists in Karachi, Pakistan entered the office of a Christian charity, tied seven workers to chairs and then brutally murdered them. According to Muslim witnesses, the Muslims "showed no haste. They took a good 15 minutes in segregating the Christians and making sure that each one of their targets received the most horrific death." The killing of non-Muslim humanitarian workers by devout followers of Islam occurs quite often. The Bodu-Bala Sena (BBS) is a political movement crystallizing mainly around Sinhala-Buddhist advocates of strong anti-Islamism. The knee-jerk reaction of opportunist political observers is to regard this as an example of a majoritarian populace behaving brutally, after having `caused Sinhala-Tamil terror’ by allegedly provoking the Tamils with ‘Sinhala-only’ discrimination. The BBS has also provided fodder for anti-government critics as well as the usual `I told you so’ liberals who believe that mass movements can be corrected by a little bit of sermonizing by `good monks’ holding vigils around the Lipton circus.`Candle-light vigils’, which are more typical of... -Full Story-

US preoccupation with Sri Lanka
By Neville Ladduwahetty  Courtesy ISLAND
US preoccupation with Sri Lanka’s internal affairs is a cause for concern. Every incident has prompted a comment from the US. If the office of a newspaper is attacked, it is an attack on the independence of the media despite the fact that any number of possibilities not connected with media freedom exists for such attacks. While issues such as increase in electricity tariffs, transfers of judges and concerns over religious tensions have elicited comment, the following are repeated on a regular basis: progress on reconciliation; delays in implementing the National Plan of Action;... -Full Story-

BOSTON TRUTH: The “Chechen Connection”, Al Qaeda and the Boston Marathon Bombings
By Prof Michel Chossudovsky
Nine thousand heavily armed police including SWAT teams were deployed in a manhunt to capture a 19 year old student at U-Mass, after his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the alleged Boston Marathon terror mastermind was shot dead by police allegedly after a car chase and shoot out with police. Prior to the conduct of a police investigation, the 19 year old student has already been designated as “guilty”. The fundamental legal principle of “innocence until proven guilty” has been scrapped. In the words of President Obama (a graduate of Harvard Law School), the Boston 19 year... -Full Story-

Malinda Seneviratne, the young journalist is correct when he said at the Young Journalists meeting that there must have been a fertile ground developing in Sri Lanka for years for BBS idea to take root this strongly and this quickly. Further thoughts on CKDu
Ben Silva
Thanks to Dr A Wijesekara for supplying information and thanks to Lankaweb for highlighting the issue. Arsenic and Cadmium levels of healthy people living in endemic areas appear to be double (approximately) that of the control group. This suggest that people living in endemic areas are subjected to high levels of Cd and As, that are known toxins, causing kidney failure.  Due to this high level of exposure, some may succumb to CKD. The probability could be calculated easily if one knows the number of people who are suffering from CKDu and the population in the relevant... -Full Story-

Sri Lankan Reflections on Siva
Romesh Jayaratnam Kandy
As a Sri Lankan, I reflect on Siva, the Lord Most High. I enumerate several of his names, allude to His grace and describe his ancient shrine in Trincomalee, East Sri Lanka. The intent is to celebrate His place in the Sri Lankan Tamil inheritance. Siva presides over our destiny amidst our turbulent history. The Names of Siva Siva, God almighty, has many names in the Hindu tradition. The 9th century Tamil text, the Tiruvachakam, uses several to designate him. Amongst others, Siva is called the First (Munnon), the Great One (Periyon), the Ancient One (Pazhaiyon),... -Full Story-

Cunning efforts to implement Sharia in Sri Lanka
Nandana Wijeratne
The gazette notification of 19 April 2013 under Standing Order No.48 proposes a Bill that when carefully reading shows the cunning method of legally implementing Sharia laws into the school system which invariably will lead towards a very critical atmosphere in Sri Lanka. Since our legislatures belonging to the Sinhala Buddhist are either asleep or busy accepting any proposal that comes with it monetary gains, their weaknesses are being exposed to the maximum at the cost of the country. It sheds light on FBI activities that warrant close examination given it is now known the FBI had tracked the older of the two Boston suspects for 3-5 years, and that Russian intelligence had explicitly warned the FBI about him. For the past 20 years, the FBI has used informants and agent-provocateurs to induce Muslims and others to plan terrorist bombings, and in many cases it is known that the FBI actually supplied weapons, money,... -Full Story-

Russia And China Stand Firm While India Keeps Wavering On East-West Alignment
By Dr. Sawraj Singh
The new leadership in China is making clear the priorities of China in the emerging global scenario. It seems that the Chinese have given a clear signal that their relations with Russia are most important for them. China no longer accepts America’s status as the only superpower of the world. China considers itself as the leading country of Asia. Therefore, it no longer recognizes Japan as the leading country of Asia. Moreover, just like the USA and Europe, China sees Japan as a declining power. These countries have already reached the peak of their power... -Full Story-

In fact, his findings were published amidst a lot of criticism, but Wickramasinghe continued to work on his theory that the first "seeds of life" were deposited on earth from space four billion years ago. Midnight in the Congo-The Assassination of Patrice Lumumba and the Mysterious Death of Dag Hammarskjold

The CIA has long since acknowledged responsibility for plotting the murder of Patrice Lumumba, the popular and charismatic leader of the Congo. But documents have recently surfaced that indicate the CIA may well have been involved in the death of another leader as well, U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold. Hammarskjold died in a plane crash enroute to meet Moise Tshombe, leader of the breakaway (and mineral-rich) province of Katanga. At the time of his death, there was a great deal of speculation that Hammarskjold had been assassinated to prevent the U.N. from bringing Katanga back under the rule... -Full Story-

LIFE ABROAD - Part 24:LOST DREAM!
Dr.Tilak Fernando
The closing down of the Ceylon Students Centre was a big sledge hammer blow to the students and the Sri Lankan expatriates who used to enjoy typical Sri Lankan cuisine at an extremely reasonable price which also saved time in preparing insipid meals by students on their own lodgings. From a Sri Lankan government perspective it was a great loss of opportunity as an investment by allowing it to slip away at a time when a loan had already been arranged to purchase the freehold of the Student Centre through the Natwest Bank. What is the best tactical move to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka given the geopolitical forces that currently menace us?
R Chandrasoma
The conventional thinking is that threats to our survival are rooted in politics and that effective strategies to thwart such dangers must necessarily be of a political nature - in the wise choice of external relations or revamped internal moves to appease or mollify the discontented within. This is standard thinking but it does not apply when dangers are imminent and our enemies sense weakness . It is clear - even obvious - that our enemies will use the famous and time-tested tactic of fomenting rebellion by giving all encouragement to minorities with declared discontents. ... -Full Story-

Karunanidhi on Saturday made a fresh pitch for a state cabinet meeting to adopt a resolution recommending commutation of the death sentence awarded to three convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. “Our stand is that capital punishment should be abolished and should be taken off the law book,” Mr. Karunanidhi said, recalling his remarks that the death sentence of Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan should be commuted on humanitarian grounds. “If the state government has to approach the problem truly, it should not just stop after adopting... -Full Story-

Army inquiry to civilian deaths is a joke, according to TNA
Asada M Erpini
The response of Suresh Premachandran, an MP of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to the report of the army inquiry, as mentioned in the media on 11 April, is hardly surprising. Leaving the genuineness, objectivity and the veracity of the inquiry by the armed forces aside, the TNA stance has always been anti-Sri Lankan and anti-armed forces.  Is it possible for the TNA to cite a single action or incident that would suggest even vaguely that it ever did anything to safeguard the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka? Shenali Waduge
Nations and nation systems did not emerge without a history. Nations like Sri Lanka have a rich cultural and historical heritage they should not feel shy about. The modern day liberal secularists would profane a different notion but against the heritage of the past what have these liberals given for history to remember? International diplomacy is much more than the gun boat diplomacy currently pursued. The softer approach is far more binding and reaps greater benefits. The cultural ties will secure diplomatic bonds that include people that are ideal in the current context of global hostility. Sri... -Full Story-

President Kumaratunga remained President from 1994 and it was on 1st November 2003 that the LTTE submitted proposals for an interim self-governing authority (ISGA) that would more or less legally seal what the ceasefire had provisionally established. Was the Colonial Encounter an unmitigated disaster for the peoples of Sri Lanka?
R Chandrasoma
It is commonly supposed that Asiatic nations - Sri Lanka  being a kind of archetype in this respect - suffered hugely due to  the predation of European nations in the first flush of imperial power. There is no doubt that Portugal was a marauding menace in the sixteenth century and that this first encounter with a rough and brutal European nation was calamitous for us. Let us not forget, however, that much of the misery was  locally engendered in that our rulers of the time not merely misjudged the White Invader but openly sought his patronage in... -Full Story-

Christian denigration of Buddhism and conversion of the vulnerable

Creating violence and then moralising is one of the WMDs used by the Christian church to destabilise native societies. The Karen rebels in Burma and Tamil Tigers of Sri Lanka were well supported by the Christian church. They were in the forefront supporting the Tigers internationally. Their propaganda machines depicted the war as a fight between Buddhists and Hindus. It was not unusual to use a caricature of a Buddhist monk with an AK-47 in one hand and a grenade in the other as a tool to denigrate Buddhism in articles written in western media. The main race are the Sinhalese while the Tamils, Muslims and Burghers (Anglo-Sri Lankans) form the remaining. The Muslims of Sri Lanka are a very small minority amounting to approximately 10% of a total population of 16 Million people. They claim descendancy from the Arab traders, who made Sri Lanka... -Full Story-

The Muslims and Sri Lanka
By Kamalika Pieris .
The first wave of Muslims to arrive in Sri Lanka came from West Asia. Therefore let us briefly look at the Muslim achievements in West Asia. Islam originated in the Arab Peninsula, where the Prophet Mohammed preached in 622 AD. Islamic religious teachings are held in the Koran and the Islamic social life is guided by the Islamic Sharia Law. The Arabs, once converted to Islam, went on an expansionist spree which eventually swallowed up Egypt, Syria, Persia, Iraq and finally, in 711 AD, Spain. Virtually all those countries had their own civilisations prior to... -Full Story-

Aggressive Evangelisation and North-East
Satyameva Jayate
Some of you may remember my recent posts from the north-east in which I had highlighted my concerns re. aggressive missionary activities in the region. Many of you would also know that there is a considerable amount of literature and news-paper reports on how foreign aid is being funnelled into anti-national activities in this part of India – at least some of it, finding its way to the numerous terrorist organisations active in the border states. Below are two first-hand accounts and one short extract that underline the magnitude of the problem and the gravity of the situation.... -Full Story-

It-s official, Christian missionaries donate billions to Indian NGOs
Source: IBTL
What has been asserted time and again by nationalist organisations and has been emphatically refuted by self-proclaimed liberals, is now out in the open. The latest report of the Home Ministry shows that more than Rs 10,000 crore was pumped into India during 2009-2010, mostly from the USA and Europes Christian organisations to NGOs in India. The report, approved by Union Home Secretary RK Singh in January 2012, revealed that major donors from abroad and receivers in India are Christian Missionaries and Church-sponsored NGOs. The four largest donors are all evangelical christian organisations who have a prophessed goal... -Full Story-

P.A.Samaraweera, Melbourne

Tamil Nadu game plan to take over Sri Lanka
From a Well wisher
What is the Tamil Problem ?  Do they have a Problem ?  In India, starting from the 1920s, Tamil Nadu tried hard to form a Coalition with other Dravidian states in the South of India and break away.  This did not work out since the other states refused to be led by Tamil Nadu.    Also, in 1963 PM Nehru passed a very strong anti-Secessionist Law. TN then realised they can never have a separate state in India.  So attention was turned to Sri Lanka.  Then known as Ceylon, the island had a good climate, the... -Full Story-

British peer reveals MI6 role in Lumumba killing
Courtesy The Hindu
The British intelligence services may have just had one of their best-kept secrets blown: their role in the abduction and assassination of Patrice Lumumba, Congo’s first democratically elected prime minister whose Pan-African nationalism and pro-Moscow leanings alarmed the West. For more than 50 years, rumours have swirled over allegations of British involvement in Lumumba’s brutal murder in 1961, but nothing has ever been proved — leaving the CIA and its Belgian peers alone to take the rap for what a Belgian writer has described as “the most important assassination of the 20th century.” Now, in a... -Full Story-
