Well done Mr. Obama……… President of Sri Lanka? Double standards?
By: J. Gamini Jayawardena
Now the most wanted terrorist Bin Laden has been hunted down by the Americans. In a civilized society, the killing of the man who led one of the most ruthless terrorist outfit in world and brought human destruction is indeed a pleasant event. President Obama was jubilant and the leaders of world reacted positively and expressed their endorsement. The Americans were overjoyed; hundreds of citizens holding the Stars and Stripes marched on the streets with cheers, joyous faces expressing feeling of their inner heart. In fact, it was triumphalism time in theUSA. Who can blame... -Full Story-

The perils of partial concessions for regime and nation
By Malinda Seneviratne
What transpired in Geneva at the Human Rights Council sessions clearly indicates where the anti-Sri Lankan forces are going.  Ban Ki-moon tabled the report authored by a panel appointed by him (illegally), against all norms of protocol.  Legitimacy was obtained by tabling the said report (flawed, malicious and clearly designed to hurt Sri Lanka with very little support of claims through substantiation) along with those documents submitted by the Sri Lankan delegation (one put together by the Defence Ministry regarding military operations and the other detailing the humanitarian efforts by the Government).    By appointing a... -Full Story-

Necessary meditations on carelessness and callousness
Written by Malinda Seneviratne
I haven’t seen Regi Siriwardena’s play ‘The Blinding’, directed by Haig Karunaratne.  I was not at the preview at the ICES and not at the British Council more recently.  I haven’t read the play either.  Someone else was at both performances, Comrade Aunty Nimal Breckenridge. And, as she sometimes does when something irks her, she shared a story.   ‘Last evening I was at a play pre-viewed before a group of us. It was "experimental theatre": a hard hitting commentary on how we "ordinary" people lived our ordinary lives while corpses were floating down rivers and petrol... -Full Story-

Epitaph of a colonized (Part-1)
Geethanjana Kudaligamage
 Notes from Kirinda
What I am writing now is a fusion of some of my thoughts with crude translation of some pages from my notebook originally written in Sinhala language. These notes were about my Kataragama tour with a group of friends and some relatives two years after the Tsunami hit southern coast ofSri Lanka. By the time of our tour there were no traces of the calamity that had devastated the region two years ago. Soon we forgot about it.  Although the tour to the south was pleasant, by the afternoon we were extremely... -Full Story-

Police Commando Camp No 69 issues a statement on legal murder
By Malinda Seneviratne
There was a shooting last Sunday (September 25, 2011).  It occurred within the precincts of the Police Commando Camp No 69 in Maha Oya, Ampara.  The victim was Assistant Superintendent Sisira Kumara.  The gunman, B.A. Jayatilleka was the Chief Inspector of the same camp.  After shooting the ASP, Jayatilleka shot himself and later succumbed to his injuries.    Got me thinking.   I don’t know what it was all about.  It was reported that there was an argument.  The trigger-puller may have acted on impulse or else had planned to pull trigger right along.  Whether the... -Full Story-

Will Devatagaha Dharga give victory to Muzammil?
 By Ameer
There is a photo on page 02 of the Daily Mirror of 27/09/2011. The photo shows our mayoral candidate Muzammil flanked by Devatagaha "moulavis", devotees, Ranil Wickremasinghe and Muzammil's well-wishers. This photo has been taken beside the grave of the Devatagaha saint. The Meezan on the head side of the grave is bedecked with garlands. This reminds one of the chief deity of a Hindu Kovil where the statue of pilliar is bedecked liberally.    Our Prophet Sallahu Alaihivasallam has compulsorily prohibited and made it haram of high order of anything Jews, Christians and followers of other religions... -Full Story-

Enforcing 13th Amendment will not prevent War Crimes against Sri Lanka
Shenali Waduge
It was never a surprise when Sri Lanka began to be admonished for completely defeating an international terrorist organization. The wave of admonishes coming from foreign Governments including international peace agencies disregarding the success of the first military defeat of a terrorist organization while carrying out the worlds largest humanitarian rescue operation simply reveals the hypocrisies that prevails in international laws & international thinking. Sri Lanka’s public is not surprised & Sri Lanka’s public is also aware that the “wish lists” presented by the West including India attempting to entice the Sri Lankan government to agree to... -Full Story-

Canada Deports Former LTTE Cadre As Does Britain In Recent Times Where Appeals Are Rejected Indicative Of A Positive Stance.
Insight By Sunil Kumar
Sept.30th 2011 It used to be a case of lies, innuendo and fabrications presented by clever albeit crooked defence attorneys in many parts of the world which often was the redemption of terrorists and criminals on the run seeking havens in places which tolerated them. It was a shameful practice which was time imemorial going back to the great wars and perhaps much further and a consternation to those who saw it as an aberration of justice and righteousness but not so today particularly in the case of Tamil Tiger terrorists and their consorts who wreaked havoc on... -Full Story-

The Group of ’72 won it all on a mystic Sunday
Written by Malinda Seneviratne
Gatherings of old friends is always nice, even if what occasioned the meeting happened to be something as somber and sad as a funeral.  My friend Janaka Perera’s father passed away last Saturday and as is often the case when someone close to someone close dies, close-people drop by, commiserate and help in whatever ways possible.    There were lots of school friends who’ve known each other for more than forty years and some who I hadn’t met in decades.  Time passes, the world moves and when we move out of classroom and school to... -Full Story-

A former Canadian Tamil activist who was caught brokering a $1-million arms deal for a Sri Lankan rebel group five years ago has written an open letter urging youths not to repeat his mistakes. Writing from prison in New York, Sathajhan Sarachandran acknowledged for the first time the Tamil youth organization he once ran in Toronto was “part of the LTTE,” the separatist rebels also known as the Tamil Tigers. Tragedy Befallen on the Muslim Ummah
  By Mifly
The tragedy that has befallen the Muslim Ummah is heartbreaking. This is not confined only to Sri Lanka but has happened all over the world. The Muslims are despised and humiliated all over the world. We are very quick to point our fingers towards "others" for the despicable situation we have fallen into. We never bother to look at ourselves and do some self criticism and self evaluation which is the Islamic guidance. Fallout in the Sahara: Did the War in Libya Play into the Hands of al-Qaeda?
By ALAN BOSWELL / AGADEZ, NIGER | Time.com – Wed, Sep 28, 2011..
Where the green of central Africa surrenders to the creeping dry talons of the Saharan desert, down a 14-hour drive from the closest thing Niger has to a city, the baked mud and sand outpost of Agadez is one of those corners of Africa where years get measured in the cracking of walls or the growth of a beard. Humanitarian guns for hire: West's mercenary mission
RT
With the UK and other Western forces still in Libya, a prominent British journalist argues that control of oil was the real motivating factor. Rebels in oil-rich countries everywhere can count on the West as a mercenary army in their revolutions. “I do not believe that sovereign states have a legal right or an obligation or a duty to interfere in other sovereign states… This was not a country that threatened Britain, it didn’t threaten any of its neighbors and didn’t invade a neighbor. It was going about its own business,” British author and Guardian journalist Simon Jenkins told... -Full Story-

Legal Murder: does it help lower the crime rate?
 Malinda Seneviratne
One of the common arguments for instituting the death penalty is that it helps keep the crime rate down.  In the mid-nineties when there was a vociferous call for the implementation of the death penalty in Sri Lanka, the advocates of this practice vigorously waved crime statistics pertaining to the period after the last hanging (in 1976, if I remember right).    They had a point.  The crime rate had indeed shot up after that last legal murder.  On the other hand, to draw a consequent-line from non-execution to rising crime assumes that all other factors... -Full Story-

Neutrinos are electrically neutral elementary subatomic particles, each of which has a corresponding antiparticle called antineutrino, which have the capacity to zip through ordinary matter almost unaffected over great distances. Some facts of binge drinking that lead to anxiety and depression.
Dr Hector Perera London
What is binge drinking? For the NHS [National Health Service], binge drinking is defined as drinking over double the amount of recommended daily units in one session. For men this is over eight units, and for women, over six. However, because individuals are all different, the rate at which they reach intoxication varies. Vile Vellahla violence stamped on the Tiger flag
H. L. D. Mahindapala
Over and above all other factors there is only one single over-determining character that defines the culture of Jaffna in all its dimensions – and that is caste. Jaffna without caste does not exist. Nor is there a peninsular culture outside the rigid caste system. Focusing on the "caste character" embedded in Tamil society, Sebastian Rasalingam, Toronto, Canada asked: “Can there ever be a "historic Tamil village" without its caste system?” (Lanka Guardian – July 4, 2011)  Indeed, no!  Jaffna without caste is inconceivable like Romeo without Juliet. Or the peninsula without panamkottay. The caste... -Full Story-

Re-Motion by Senator Lee Rhiannon to suspend Sri Lanka from the Commonwealth Council of Nations on the 22th September 2011.

Dear Senator Rhiannon!  Isn’t it strange, out of Councils of the Commonwealth, which constitutes to fifty four member states this group has found Sri Lanka as the country which has allegedly committed worst crimes against humanity? It has become a practice by the International Tamil Diaspora to muster the above-mentioned groups in the West to attack the Sri Lankan Government whenever an important forum is about to commence. Such events are also the happy times for these parasites (hired mouths) to collect the handsome pay-cheques!  You articulate loud a script that has been pre-documented denigrating the image... -Full Story-

Some aspects of British Foreign Policy as it relates to Sri Lanka
Rudra Gamini de Zoysa
There are some major considerations to be taken in to account when we try to understand why Britain is so overtly antagonistic towards Sri Lanka ever since the Government of Sri Lanka defeated Tamil terrorism in 2009. I believe that the reasons are largely found in Britain’s foreign policy crafted in Whitehall. I am basing this article on the facts gathered by Mark Curtis in his explosive book “Unpeople” published by Vintage, 2004, and the various writings of John Pilger. Declassified “top secret” documents are the primary sources of information for both Curtis and... -Full Story-

Might of powerful nations cannot prevail against justice, fairplay -President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the United Nations General Assembly in New York

"Whilst clash of ideas, opinions and values continue we have clearly to recognize that dialogue, deliberation and consensus offer the only viable means for resolving differences. The might of powerful nations cannot prevail against justice and fairplay," said President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the 66th Sessions of the United Nations General Assembly in New York yesterday. President Rajapaksa said. "I am deeply mindful ... that the battle for peace is every bit as important and difficult as the struggle against terror. The sickening filth our international community has become
Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey-Pravda.Ru
Never have I felt so revolted, disgusted, disappointed and violated at belonging to the same species as those sickening creatures crawling around our international community today. The Libya Question and the subsequent UN General Assembly in September was a study in spinelessness, lack of morals, absence of fibre and total disrespect for the law. An analogy: The proud home owner, the son and the evil neighbour The analogy is perfectly simple to understand. An evil neighbour covets someone's rich lands, turns his son into a drug addict, supplies him with heroin for free and then gets him to... -Full Story-

However, that he should make such a statement in the form of a "threat"  is not acceptable because by doing so he is disregarding the rights of a sovereign country and the human rights of all the people of Sri Lanka. Further, the Commonwealth is composed of many countries and the decision to hold the games in Sri Lanka was made in 2009, why did... -Full Story-

In a telephone call to Reuters on Saturday, Moussa Ibrahim, a spokesman for the deposed Libyan leader, said that 354 people were killed as a result of NATO airstrike on a residential building and a hotel in Gaddafi’s hometown of Sirte. Civilian deaths in Libya: who’s killing who?
RT
In Libya, where NATO-backed NTC forces are attempting to wipe out the last remaining pro-Gaddafi strongholds, civilians are still being killed but normally-vocal countries backing a UN resolution to protect them have gone strangely quiet. British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy paid a visit this week to survey their handiwork. The first heads of state to visit Tripoli since the city fell to rebel forces say their countries’ work in spearheading the NATO intervention is not yet done. “We must keep on with the NATO mission until civilians are all protected and until this work... -Full Story-

The democracy bomb
Lisa Karpova
Among the stupidest platitudes that one all too often hears from U.S. and western hypocrites, the worst is how they portray their own countries as beacons or paragons of freedom and democracy when a quick look, and especially an extended one, will demonstrate otherwise. When something is built on dishonesty, all else begins to unravel. NATO exposes their evil intentions by their extensive use of lies and trickery. Once again, however, they have overestimated themselves and underestimated the Libyan people. The lies and trickery do not work. Force and coercion are not considered examples of either freedom or... -Full Story-

Libyan fighters battled street by street for control of Muammar's Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte for the third day on Saturday, taking sniper, assault rifle and rocket fire from his loyalists perched on the city's rooftops. Ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) fighters said it was unclear how many Gaddafi loyalists were in the city but several suggested that some of Sirte's civilian residents had started joining the fight on the ousted leader's side. What’s this ‘nineleven’ you conquered us for?
An overwhelming majority of Afghans have no idea about the September 2001 terror attacks against the US, even though it resulted in an American-led invasion of their country and a decade of occupation. A modern Westerner would instantly recognize the image of a huge plane crashing into a skyscraper in an inferno of burning fuel. What happened 10 years ago was the pivoting point for global affairs. America found itself in the middle of the War on Terror. Osama Bin Laden grew in the public eye from a second-rate terrorist to a global villain on a par with Hitler. Americans are poorer than ever
RT
More Americans were living in poverty last year than in the entire 52 years that the US Census Bureau has been tracking the figure, new reports say. Demographers raking over the 2010 census info have revealed that 56.2 million people in the US were living below the poverty line last year, which puts the percentage of impoverished Americans at nearly one-in-six, reports The New York Times. While the population of the country continues to grow, the raw number of Americans suffering does as well. Speaking in terms of per capita, the 15.1 percent figure of impoverished in 2010 is... -Full Story-

National integration and ethnic segregation, the dilemma of a nation.
Dr Sudath Gunasekara
Throughout history Sri Lanka had been one of the best examples for integration of people belonging to different ethno-religious groups to form one strong nation. What followed the advent of Vijaya and the more recent wave of south Indian immigrants during the medieval period could be cited as classic examples of such harmonious socio-cultural integration. Its insularity and isolation from other countries in the early years and the dominance of the Sinhala Buddhist culture in later years had greatly influenced in shaping this unique society. The numerous ethnic groups that have come from the mainland... -Full Story-

Are We Cooking Our Own Goose To Feed the Hostile?
By Gomin Dayasiri
Are we laying Sri Lanka as a tasty dish before the humanitarian lobby to devour? While we sleep soundly without attending to basic necessities, those faulting us for eliminating terrorism, are manufacturing overtime- lies, lies and more lies to discredit. Postponing the day of reckoning is in the grip of our national past-time of procrastination. Add to it: wistful thinking that problems with time will blow away to the realm of the forgotten and fresh issues hopefully arise elsewhere to distract attention. Canadian PM's Call To Boycott CHOGM Summit Sounds Baseless Beyond His Own Misconstrued Conclusions And Those Of A Few Misguided Others'.
 LankaWeb Editorial
September 13th 2011 The Canadian Prime Minister's call to Heads of States to consider Sri Lanka's human rights record before attending the Commonwealth leaders' summit (CHOGM) to be held in Colombo seems to be one which ranges from the sublime to the ridiculous at a time when the world is becoming painfully aware of the deliberate attempts by enemies of the Government of Sri Lanka to discredit it and sounds remarkably self opinionated from someone who is normally a pragmatic, wise andrespected world leader and quite unbecoming of him.  While there has never been any proven incriminating... -Full Story-

Recently inside a new outlet of a leading chain of supermarkets, a pregnant lady had a narrow escape from a nasty fall while attempting to walk down a steep ramp which could have easily made her lose the baby she was carrying during her heavily pregnant state. The cause for such an accident was due to the thoughtless basic design structure of having a narrow ramp as railing for support, thus increasing the safety hazard. But unfortunately Sri Lanka is not a powerful country and diplomatic relations mean a lot in the modern cruel democracy and therefore we are compelled to tolerate them. At the end of WWII, an agreement was reached at the Bretton Woods Conference which pegged the value of gold at US$35 per ounce and that became the international standard against which currency was measured. By EMMA FARGE | REUTERS Published: Sep 8, 2011 23:27 Updated: Sep 8, 2011 23:27 BENGHAZI: Libya’s interim government is drafting a proposal that would shrink the responsibilities of the National Oil Corp. (NOC) to make it a purely commercial organization, a member of the interim government has said. The country is trying to restore oil production after more than six months of fighting between rebels and forces loyal to Muammar Qaddafi which have caused foreign oil companies to flee and led to infrastructure damage to oil fields and export terminals. Libya’s new leaders are preparing a draft proposal to... -Full Story- (arabnews.com - 08/09/11)

Qaddafi’s Western Friends
by: Arnold Cassola, Project Syndicate | News Analysis
Valletta, Malta - With Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s regime in ruins and Qaddafi himself on the run, it is time to ponder just how he survived in power for so long. Greed for markets and money, it seems, often trumped the West’s supposed concern for basic human rights. Major Western countries compromised themselves over Libya for decades. After all, Qaddafi survived President Ronald Reagan’s punitive 1986 bombing raid on his compound only because former Italian Prime Minister Bettino Craxi and former Maltese Prime Minister Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici tipped him off.... -Full Story-

The execution of three persons convicted over the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi  has been stayed for eight weeks by the Madras High Court.   Murugan, Santhan and Perarivalan, currently at the Vellore Jail, were to be hanged on September 9, 2011.  The bench, offering interim relief, had observed a 11 year delay in the delay of mercy petitions filed by the convicts to the President.  In the meantime, arch Tamil chauvinist and long-time choir-boy of Tamil terrorism, MDMK leaderVaiko had thundered that if the three were executed, then Tamil... -Full Story-

Qadhafi may be gone but Libya's struggles go on
Soumaya Ghannoushi
A rift in the new leadership exposes conflicting claims to the future of the country. After six months of defiant resistance, fiery speeches, chilling threats and bloodcurdling brutality, Muammar Qadhafi has finally fallen on his sword. His collapse, however, is far from the end of the story. Instead, it heralds the start of a more complicated chapter in his country's history. As tanks surround Qadhafi's last outposts in Sirte, the cold war over the country's future gathers pace. The common enemy has been forced out of the scene and now the vast differences between those he... -Full Story-

Libya: 'arms flooding out of country has strengthened al-Qaeda'
By Damien McElroy, Algiers
Arms and fighters flooding out of Libya have dramatically strengthened al-Qaeda in the Sahara and threaten to turn the desert into a war zone that engulfs its weak and impoverished governments.Officials from four countries in the region warned yesterday that the conflict in Libya would spill over its borders into an 8 million square mile zone of instability. “The region has been turned into a powder keg,” Mohamed Bazoum, the Niger foreign minister said. “Things have changed and degraded since the Libya crisis and the region is on a war path. MI6 Knew I was Tortured
By Martin Chulov
A Libyan rebel leader who was rendered to Tripoli with the assistance of MI6 said on Monday that he had told British intelligence officers he was being tortured but they did nothing to help him. In a claim that will increase the pressure for further disclosure about the UK's role in torture and rendition since 9/11, Abdul Hakim Belhaj said a team of British interrogators used hand signals to indicate they understood what he was telling them. "I couldn't believe they could let this go on," he said. "What has happened deserves a full inquiry."... -Full Story-

To Avert A Bloodbath – Libya And The Press - Part 2
By David Edwards
On August 23 and 24, the media once again abandoned all pretence of objectivity in celebrating the 'fall' of Tripoli, as they had in celebrating the 'fall' of Kabul and Baghdad. This, again, was a moment of national triumph, of vindication - the famed concern with 'balance' was brushed aside as mean-spirited, even nasty (the media's Royal Wedding mode). On the BBC's News at Six (August 22), deputy political editor, James Landale, described feelings inside 10 Downing Street:... -Full Story-

Sri Lanka is not a fantasy island the TNA seems to think. We have a strong president elected twice with an absolute majority in the Parliament where no one can dictate terms to the Government and for that matter definitely not TNA who represents only a small percentage of the Tamil population in the North and East. NATO Shocking Terror against civilians

A massacre, a genocide, a razing of a town to the ground. Their crime? None. The only way NATO terrorists can take the town is if they kill everyone. The city of Sirte, hometown of Libyan leader Muammar Al-Gaddafi, is under siege from NATO barbarians. So far in the 4 days plus campaign, over 1,400 civilians have been killed. The campaign is being waged for two purposes. The first purpose is to murder Gaddafi and his entire family. The war on Libya has not only been a war that has vindicated NATO's claim to the most powerful military force on earth, capable of imposing its will through sheer aggression wherever it sees fit, but it has also been a war that has reasserted the western mainstream media's power to not just fabricate events but to create. The first media victory was when it got away with claiming that Gaddafi's government was attacking it's own citizens in Tripoli from the air, a claim which formed part of the pretext for NATO's intervention and also served... -Full Story-
