Going ahead with his campaign for carving out a separate ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Tamil Eelam’ in Sri Lanka, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday sought the revival of the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO), an outfit he was associated with in the 1980s, to fight for a separate State for Tamils on Gandhian lines.

Declaring the creation of the separate state his lifeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s ambition despite the policy of the central government is totally against it the Chief Minister said he wants ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the Central government of which he is a memberƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  to toe the line.

Addressing a public meeting, organised by the party in Kolathur constituency in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Karunanidhi, a key partner in the ruling United Progressive Alliance, appealed for the Centre’s support for creating Tamil Eelam.

Foreseeing a new rising there, he said the struggle should be peaceful and in the path of non-violence adhered to by S J V Chelvanayakam, or Thanthai Selva, founder of the Federal Party in Sri Lanka

ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-The Sri Lankan President may reject the idea, but it will be my life’s mission hereafter,ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚ the DMK leader said.

Tamils here should raise support for ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Eelam’ by reviving the TESO, of which he was a founder, with the help of leaders such as Dravidar Kazhagam president K. Veeramani.who was initiallypromoting a separate state for Tamils in India..

The Hindu said earlier at the meeting DMK treasurer and KarunanidhiƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s son ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ M.K. Stalin addressed it.

When Karunanidhi initiated the call for a separate state in Sri Lanka commenting on it the Hindu said, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-Tamil ‘Eelam’ is for Tamil Nadu politicians what the full moon is for hungry wolves. All their howling is indicative, not of any yearning for a distant, dreamy Eelam, but of the baser urges of the politics of the here-and-nowƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚

“Declaring the creation of the separate state his life’s ambition”

Karuna is very old and chir ridden now. Only a few years left in his life. He will die without seeing Elam as his friend Thalaivar did.

“Tamil Eelam in Tamil Nadu”. Karunanidhi has no testicles to say that. This loony is suffering from senile old decay.

I believe, several years ago when Tamilnadu under Karunanidhi spoke of a separate Tamilnadu state, the Indian Govt under Indira Gandhi stepped heavily on him and banned any talk of separatism, but at the same time to please Karunanidhi, the same Indian Govt had consented to setup a separate Tamil state in SriLanka. That was the beginning of problems for SriLanka and Karunanidhi had been a willing accomplice in the creation of the monster Prabakaran. India has the military power to invade and annex the North but they need to remember a much more powerful nation, lost the war in Vietnam, Cuba and now losing in Afganistan, because ‘might is right’ works only for a short period.

I believe, several years ago when Tamilnadu under Karunanidhi spoke of a separate Tamilnadu state, the Indian Govt under Indira Gandhi stepped heavily on him and banned any talk of separatism…” Isn’t this what GOSL should do concerning the TNA, the rump of the LTTE?

On a related note, there is a case filed in the supreme court right now to stop the use of the word “Tamil” in the names of political parties. This is a great move in the right direction and should be extended to cover the use of other words such as” Sinhala”, Hindu”, “Buddhist”, “Islam, “Christian” or “Muslim” or any such name which isolates a group as well so that no one will speak or stand only for for any ethnic/religious group alone. Such political ideologies are divisive and is the root cause of separatism. Sri Lanka has different types of Sri Lankans but any political party should stand for all Sri Lankans, and not for a small group of them. We need to learn from the mistakes of the past and move forward as one Sri Lankan family.

Its the new Sri Lankan dream of a few over zealous citizens to see Tamil issue shifted to Tamil Nadu in India. History has never regularized convulsive politics. Such dreams and overt politics may back fire with greater force.
Tamil demands are so simple – ‘just give us our own federal government within the constitution of Sri Lanka and recognize us as a separate ethnicity’. While some Sri Lankans dismiss this merely out of arrogance having crushed the LTTE militarily, some Sri Lankans view this suggestion with suspicion. They must look at big brother India’s or even distant friend Pakistan’s federal structure. Both these countries have multiple federal governments within the constitutionally run central government. The model has worked wonderfully well for many decades. What’s the harm in adopting a similar structure here?
I think time is ripe to implement this before a bigger damage is done. Several damages can happen : LTTE may re-emerge, India may retaliate to too much mud slinging, Tamil unrest may start over, etc.
In my opinion devising a good federal structure with ample liberties and respect for all cultures will solve this problem once and for all. I am sure Buddhist core principles would suggest a solution on similar lines.
