The Excavation Engineer of the Gampaha district has been transferred with immediate effect until probe in contact to alleged sand mining racket in Divulapitiya is concluded, Chairman of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau Dr. Kithsiri Dissanayake said.

The officials attached to the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau have also visited the site in Divulapitiya on Tuesday, it was reported.

Dissanayake said that further steps with respect of the case will be taken following the findings of the site inspection report.

The state employees of the Gampaha district also resorted to a strike earlier in protest against remarks made by Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake on the District Secretariat of Divulapitiya over the issue.

The Deputy Minister has also charged that UPFA MP Indika Anuruddha and his family members are allegedly involved in illegal sand mining. I repeatedly challenge Anuruddha to sue me. I have enough evidence against him,” he said.

    Sand mining MUST STOP immediately.

Gonja may be FOOLISH but good work Gonja for stopping this.

We must dispel all the myths about sand mining and allow it.This nonsense was created during the time the Pez when he was a minister where they created this restriction to do sand mining by his family who held the monopoly where the people in Kandy had to buy sand harvested in Miyangana.Poor sand miners were banned in sand mining in Kandy. One has only got to look below the Peradeniya bridge too see the accumulation of sand and silt that will threaten the Peradenya town if the river overflows.
In UK at present, large sums are spend using heavy machines to dredge the rivers to prevent flooding that cause much damage last year.
    Where’s Sudath?
He should forewarn the Kandy’s water authorities that any sand built around the surgechamer built at the bottom the mahavali at Gattembe will stop the river water being pumped to the 3MGD station in Gatambe thus depriving Kandy the water supply. It may be difficult to remove the muck and sand that will get lodged in that submerged water intake chamber. My burgher friend and I supervised the entire construction of that project to the highest standards with the instruction and guidance of the no nonsense Danish Engineer with our local subcontractors constantly trying to do a substandard work. We were happy when the poor people removed the sand in the river in that area.
    Sudath
You also must warn the local authorities not to allow the householders and business houses not to divert their waste to the river in areas above(up river) the river from Gatambe or we will all be drinking filth and poison that will damage our kidneys etc.
Timely intervention by young me noticed from the plans supplied by the French company that the drinking water intake was to be built just below the dirty water stream that brought all the filth from entire Kandy town and with great arguments the plan was redrawn to the annoyance of the local engineer who hardly ventured out of his seat, from that day I have to look down upon our stupid people, who just can’t be bothered or responsible.
