A suspected jihadist training camp was uncovered at a location in Mullikulam, on the Kaththankudi border, yesterday during a search and locate operation carried out by the Security Forces, a senior official said.

He said the camp, located on some 15 acres of land, was sandwiched between a town area and a dense forest and appears to have been in operation for a considerable period of time.

An observation post along with tyres stacked information for training purposes and pipes were found in this vast enclosure.

The suspected camp is believed to have been operated by the now outlawed Thowheed Jama’ath Islam movement, the official further added. This is also the first known jihadist training facility to be found in the country.

It was not known if there were any arrests made at the time this edition went to print.
