A promise which cannot be kept. Shows complete lack of knowledge on economic matters.

In 2018 this was how government cashflow was. It was the same since 2012 with lower numbers.

Total government revenue – $12 Billion

Total repayment of loans and interest – $13 Billion

    Budget deficit – $5 Billion

    New borrowings – $11 Billion
Sale of national assets – $1 Billion

The economy will be far worse off.

    1. Reducing taxes means a lower revenue number and therefore a higher deficit and higher loans! All loans have to be repaid with interest. People are worse off than tax.

    2. Unlike the UNP, SLPP will not sell national assets (hopefully). Good. But comes at a cost. More loans which have to be repaid with interest.

    3. The socalled vision involves loans, loans and more loans to build roads, etc.! More loans which have to be repaid with interest.

(A vision should be a plan without loans. Did King Parakramabahu borrow loans to do development? Did the British borrow to build infrastructure?)

I’m sure Sajith’s vision and election promises are no better.

I wrote this for the sake of the poor country which is in deep debt crisis and negative net national wealth. My only concern is the nation. Please politicians, do not put the national economy in jeopady for elections.

Above numbers are from the Treasury Annual Report 2018.

Don’t forget the stupid fast track highway proposal by Prof. Kabraal.

5 billion dollars loan for the GREAT highway will add another $5 billion commercial loan to pay back.

  4. Mario Perera Says:

Gloom and doom are the most obvious traits of the netherworld. We are a country that is already ‘down under’.

The problems are obvious. they cannot be solved by fools searching high office by stunts of hypnotism of the masses.

The country is drowned in loans. Taxing is not a solution. It will not save the sunken ship. Loans have to be repaid. Taxing only contributes an iota to that end. Non payability of loans means holding the landmass of the country to ransom. It means cutting the ground from under the feet of the people.

The valid questions to be asked are related to all factors that increase the fabulous expenditure of the government. Among such questions are:

The 13A and its disastrous consequences…a poor and small country with a multitude of mini-parliaments called provincial councils and all the infrastructures and expenses that go to house and nourish such insatiable devils that sit within them.

The composition of the parliament, its nonsensical cabinet and nonsensical national list of putting rejects of the people in driving seats.

The enrichment of parliamentarians by every conceivable means

The disastrous imports system solely serving the purpose of affording luxuries to the ones and massive commissions to others.

Loans for nonsensical constructions in the name of progress

We are a poor country with rulers rooted in nefarious structures of government that enable them to make trillions on the backs of the enslaved masses.

Throw away this damned constitution that is the source of all evils. Create another that is a reflection of this country and not of the powerful western block who are tailors for the nude emperors that are our rulers.

    Mario Perera, Kadawata

  5. Randeniyage Says:

    All these candidates are liars.
How can they promise this and that when they have to work according to the advice of Ranil until next February ?

Even if they become presidents, until their clan win the majority in the parliament they can’t do anything.

Even if they become presidents, their clan members ( who are notorious for various dirty actions) will control the government unlike those days. If Sajith wins, he will still be a slave to Ranil, he is already associating closely with dirty old men Malik, Paskaralingam ( who is the RH man of his father).

Even if they become presidents, they will look to get minority support when the clan members start fighting for a “chunk of fish”.

Even if they become presidents, they will have to maintain their lifestyle of luxury, helicopter travel, thousands of security surrounding them ( because they are not brave people as the pretend) at the same time pay back huge commercial loans they have taken.

  6. Dilrook Says:

    That is true Mario.

However, taxes must be increased to repay loans. If not, we have to pay interest until the end of the loan which is far more.

Tax revenue to GDP percentage has declined from 19% in early 1990s to just 11% by now. But we all know taxes have increased! VAT, etc., etc. were not there in early 90s.

Then how did the percentage reduce?

That is because the GDP figure is a manufactured figure. It is artificially high. In reality SL is a poorer country than our GDP.

As you correctly said, containing expenses is the best way but that requires leaders which we don’t have. Some fools call hell guards (yamapallo) leaders who they think can get things done by using violence. They are wrong. Leaders are people with a willing following. SL does not have any. SL is over-governed with too many layers and their support staff robbing state coffers at every level.

Some political parties have incited strike action to gain popularity for the election. What they fail to realise is, if or when they are in power, strike action will return. If workers are attacked or killed, the EU and the US will impose economic restrictions and 60% of our exports will be busted.
