The Cabinet of Ministers has decided to permit only religious events at the Galle Face Green from 20th April 2023.

According to a document from the Department of Government Information, permission will not be granted for musical shows, political meetings, or mass gatherings to be held at the Galle Face Green in the future.

The government document further noted that apart from religious events, the Galle Face Green will only be opened for the public to freely spend their leisure time.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority has spent Rs. 220 million to develop the Galle Face Green as a CSR project. A sum of Rs. 6.6 Million has been spent on renovating the damages that had been caused during the “Aragalaya” people’s movement at the Galle Face Green, it noted.

The government document points out that due to difficulties in maintaining the Galle Face Green due to public gatherings, it has been decided to prohibit mass public events at the location.
